Building a Program: The Birth of Clarendon State (CH 2K8)

CHARLOTTE, NC -- Alumni and students of Clarendon State University had been begging for a basketball team for years. Now, their dream has finally been realized. On November 10, 2014, the Clarendon State Dachshunds will take the court for the first time. The Dachshunds' roster is mostly comprised of former walk-ons from teams in the Carolinas who have transferred into the program. Their are players who have experience playing for teams like UNC, Duke, NC State, and Charlotte. Without further ado, let's see the depth chart for this season.

Clarendon State Depth Chart - 2014-15
    STARTER2ND3RD4TH
    PGPatrick Wallace (64)Casey Perrin (61)
    SGHaiishen McIntyre (64)Sean Kelly (63)Trey Brown (62)Eric Wagenlander (61)
    SFSasha Seymore (64)
    PFReid Aube (65)Darryl Palmer (62)
    CKeith Armstrong (65)

The Dachshunds will be coached by former High School coach, Matt Hutton. Hutton says he plans to play an up-tempo game: "My goal will be to run up and down the floor as much as possible. We will press a lot on defense which will hopefully lead force turnovers and some easy buckets for us. I think it'll be fun to watch."

Clarendon State is an Independent, which could make things difficult, but coach Hutton also sees it as an advantage. "Being an Independent gives us a lot of flexibility in making our schedule. This year's schedule may not be the toughest in the nation, but it still has a fair share of challenges."

Clarendon State Defeats Manhattan in Historic Debut

CHARLOTTE, NC -- Casey Perrin came off the bench to lead all scorers as Clarendon State defeated Manhattan 66-46 in the first game in Dachshunds history. Coach, Matt Hutton was proud of his team's effort. "Our team was amped for this game and it really showed. Neither team made a lot of shots, but our intensity was through the roof."

Starting Small Forward, Sasha Seymore scored the first points in program history with a three-pointer from the left wing. The noise in the building, nicknamed "The Dog House", was deafening. The Dachshunds rode the crowd's energy to jump out to an early 11-2 lead and never looked back. "The most impressive thing to me was that this was a complete team effort", said Hutton. "We're not an especially deep team, so we have to rely on every man on the roster."

Washington Overpowers Clarendon State in NIT Tip-Off

SEATTLE, WA -- Shawn Kemp scored 18 points to lead Washington to a 75-63 win over Clarendon State. The Huskies dominated the paint with a 30-15 rebounding advantage. Sean Kelly led Clarendon State with 19 points off the bench.

Clarendon State was able to keep the game close early and only trailed by 4 at the half. "We forced a lot of turnovers in the first half and that kept us in the game", said coach Hutton. "We made some threes in the second half to keep it interesting for a while, but they just got too many easy baskets in the paint." Washington will face Utah in the next round and Clarendon State will play High Point in the consolation game.

Clarendon State Suffers Frustrating Loss to High Point

SEATTLE, WA -- High Point stifled Clarendon State to win the consolation game of the NIT Tip-Off 67-56. Brian Richardson scored 16 points for the Panthers, leading all scorers. Backup shooting guard, Trey Brown led the Dachshunds with 13.

After a tightly contested first half, High Point stormed out of the gates with a 15-0 run to start the 2nd. The Dachshunds were ice cold and Coach Hutton was not pleased with the defense either. "Winning the turnover battle is something we hang our hat on and we did not accomplish that today. High Point beat our press for a number of easy layups." After a much needed timeout, Clarendon State clawed its way back into the game. They eventually cut the lead to 2 points, but couldn't sustain the momentum.

Clarendon State Rides Big 2nd Half to Beat Vermont

CHARLOTTE, NC -- After a tight first half, Clarendon State dominated the 2nd half 49-21 to beat Vermont 73-46. Coach Hutton was very pleased with his team's effort. "We really played an up-tempo 2nd half. We created a lot of havoc on the court and took advantage of their mistakes. That's Clarendon State basketball."

Once again, the Dachshunds had solid production off the bench. Casey Perrin led all scorers with 18 and Sean Kelly chipped in 10. Coach Hutton was still not entirely happy with his starting bigs. "I may have to shake up the starting lineup. We'll see."
