Very good start to the season. The Big South is a fun conference to play in because you get home and away games against everyone (like in those Big 12 promotions). Just watch out for UNC Asheville as they have a guy who is 7'6 and dominated me every time in my Coach Vance legacy with Radford.

        Mercer (2-4) @ Charleston Southern (4-1)
        CSU Fieldhouse
        December 3, 2007

For Charleston Southern (4-1), the words 'attack the basket' rang through their ears throughout the game. It was a huge point of emphasis and for the first time all year, the Buccaneers were able to dominate the paint with numerous trips to the line in their 68-62 win over Mercer (2-4).

The starting five all had solid games as they were paced by Sheldon Strickland's 15 points, 4 assists and 3 rebounds. Freshman power forward Paul Gombwer had his best game of the year with 9 points and 15 rebounds, just 1 point shy of his first career double-double.

Mercer had only two players in double figures with M. Jackson (12 points) and D. Moten (10 points) leading the way.

CSU has a couple days to rest up before a December 9th game as they host SC Upstate here at CSU Fieldhouse.

I actually remember Sportscenter doing a special on him during this time. He was quite the awkward big man. Didn't have to jump much at all to throw one down!

I've enjoyed the season very much so far and can't wait to get to that point in this thread.

          Thanks for the follow!

            SC Upstate (2-6) @ Charleston Southern (5-1)
            CSU Fieldhouse
            December 9, 2007

This game was over quickly as Charleston Southern (5-1) ran out to a 39-15 halftime advantage and cruised the rest of the way to a 76-55 win over SC Upstate (2-6). This brings CSU's home record to 5-0 on the young season.

The efficient shooting night for CSU was led by Jeremy Sexton's 19 points on 5-9 shooting, all of which from behind the line. The starters were able to put their mark on the game and allowed for many of the reserves to grab solid minutes in this one after the half. Junior forward Zimmy Nwogbo was able to log 28 minutes off the bench and rewarded his coach with 6 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists on 3-4 shooting.

SC Upstate did have two players register double figure scoring with S. Porchea (16) and A. Rodgers (14), but the team as a whole shot a miserable 19-63, ultimately leading to their demise.

Next week Gardner-Webb out of the Atlantic Sun Conference come to CSU Fieldhouse on December 15th.

                Gardner-Webb (3-6) @ Charleston Southern (5-2)
                CSU Fieldhouse
                December 15, 2007

It was a great game tonight with hosts Charleston Southern (5-2) ultimately dropping the game to Gardner-Webb (3-6) 66-59. The game went back and forth throughout, but the Runnin' Bulldogs bigs were just too strong for CSU to handle.

CSU was very balanced in their attack again with the guards leading the way. Jeremy Sexton led the Buccaneers with 14 points and adding 2 steals, while freshman center Cedrick Bowen finished with 7 points and 11 rebounds.

As for winning Gardner-Webb, S. Johnson had a monster game with 12 points and 14 rebounds, aided by a 6-6 night from the charity stripe. Also in double figures for the Runnin' Bulldogs was guard L. Davis with 10 points and 3 assists.

CSU looks to bounce back, but will have to do so on the road against a top-5 opponent. Florida (#4 in the recent polls) are going to be a tough match-up for the Buccaneers. Luckily, they have a couple days before their trip to Gainesville to get themselves as prepared as possible.

                    December 19, 2007

It's never easy traveling to the home court of a top-25 opponent and tonight's match-up portrayed just that. #4 Florida (10-1) found their way to the basket early and often, opening up a nice 43-27 halftime lead en route to a 69-55 victory over Charleston Southern (5-3).

Florida's stud guard Kenny Boynton led the way for all scorers tonight with 22 points on 6-12 shooting from the field and 7-8 shooting from the line. Walter Pitchford contributed a double-double off the bench (13 points and 11 rebounds) helping to pave the way to the easy victory for the SEC giants.

The Buccaneers gave it their all, but they didn't have the finishing touch required around the basket with some poor shooting, specifically from beyond the arc. Paul Gombwer has continued to impress with his relentless work ethic with 10 points and 8 assists, while Sheldon Strickland struggled mightily, shooting 3-15 from three although he finished with 13 points and 3 assists.

CSU comes back home to host South Carolina State from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) on December 23rd.

                      December 23, 2007

There aren't too many kid-friendly words to describe the feeling after tonight's home game. Maybe the players were thinking about Santa...maybe they were thinking about last second Christmas shopping for their girlfriends...maybe CSU just really can't shoot the ball, period. South Carolina State (2-11) came into CSU Fieldhouse with only one win to their season, yet walked out after doubling that win total with a 56-42 victory over a deflated Charleston Southern (5-4) who has now dropped three straight.

Let's start with the home side, as the Buccaneers had very little to praise. Senior forward Jonathan Brooks finished as the only player in double figures with 11 points and 2 rebounds off the bench.

The Bulldogs were led by freshman guard Dennis Rowe and his game-high and season-high 23 points while grabbing 6 rebounds. Off the bench, Presano Bell had a solid 8 points and 11 rebounds for the shockingly small 8-man Bulldogs squad.

CSU licks it's wounds over the Christmas break and must get themselves up for the UCF Holiday Classic and a First Round game against LIU at the Convocation Center in Orlando, Florida. This New Year's tournament opens up on December 30th with the Third Place and Championship games occurring on New Year's Eve.

The First Round of the UCF Holiday Classic brought a defensive struggle. In the end, Charleston Southern (6-4) advanced to the Championship game with a 54-41 win over LIU (6-6).

Today's game had only one player in double figures as CSU's Cedrick Bowen finishing with a huge double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Also standing out for the Buccaneers was Paul Gombwer who posted 7 points and grabbed a season-high 16 rebounds.

For LIU nobody hit for double digits, however Arnold Mayorga had a solid game off the bench with 6 points and 10 rebounds.

In the other Semifinal match UCF got by NJIT 75-69, which makes tomorrow's Championship game between hosts UCF and Charleston Southern. NJIT will face off with LIU in the Third Place game.

Charleston Southern (6-5) just missed out on a chance for some early season hardware to the host team UCF (7-4) in the UCF Holiday Classic Championship game by the narrow margin of 65-58. The Knights held a 31-30 advantage going into the half and never allowed the Buccaneers to lead at any point in the second half.

Cedrick Bowen had one of his best games of the season, finishing with 12 points and 12 rebounds for Charleston Southern. The rest of the Buccaneers didn't shoot quite as well as Bowen, but Kenny Mitchell had a solid defensive effort with 11 points and 8 rebounds from his small forward position.

In the win, UCF was a two-headed attack between Michael Chandler and Marcus Jordan. Chandler was easily the player of the game and tournament MVP with 23 points and 14 rebounds in the Championship game. Jordan pitched in with 17 points and 6 rebounds while going 4-7 from three.

Up next for the Buccaneers is a game at home against Florida Gulf Coast out of the Atlantic Sun Conference on January 4th.
