^Dude, it was ridiculous. I had no idea he was even nearing that assist total until I stopped to look at the box score in the middle of the fourth and saw he had 19 assists. I was floored. He was shy four points of the double-double, so of course I got him those four (and an extra one on top), and he dished out a few more assists along the way.

It was a big win against Houston, my first blowout game -- defense just stepped up HUGE against Harden, we shut him down, forced the offense to run through Dwight and that forced Dwight to play a bit tentatively on defense (he totally didn't want to get in foul trouble).

^Yes, yes he did. Man, that highlight video still holds up all these years later.

BREAKING: Ray Allen Announces Intention to Retire at End of Season

      February 1st, 2016

      By Vonny Lee

It's been a season of mostly highs in Seattle, as the return of the SuperSonics has reinvigorated the city; a piece of it that had been missing for so long was returned to it this season. One can say the same for the return of Ray Allen, who was a part of this team for four years between 2003 and 2007; Allen's Sonics weren't the most successful iteration, but for many fans his Sonics were their first squad.

Today, after a close win against the Grizzlies (89 to 86), Allen announced his intention to retire at season's end.

"It's been weighing on my mind for the last two months or so," said Allen after the game, sounding tired. "I love this team, I love this city, and it's been a dream to come back here and revive this squad ... but I'm hurting. I wake up sore every day and it's taking it's toll on me mentally, physically. I can't really see myself doing this another year, not with how much this season is taking out of me; I've discussed it with the people closest to me and this is my choice.

"I'm telling people now so we can get it over with, get it out of the way, like Jordan did; I'm not going to take any questions about whether I'll be back next year or not, I'm not going to be a distraction to my team by keeping them in the dark about my choice. This is it, this is the last season for me, and I couldn't be prouder to ride off into the sunset with these guys."

Allen's words were seemingly well-received by his teammates; a team-only meeting was held after the media left the locker-room.

"What was said stays between us," said Coach Hollins after the meeting.

Other players and coaches were equally unwilling to comment on the content of the meeting, but one can imagine that it was emotional for all parties involved as the Sonics were in their locker-room for over an hour after they were scheduled to leave the arena.

Owner Max Newman released the following statement after the game, just as Allen announced his retirement at season's end:

"Ray Allen has been one of the premier guards and shooters in this league for nearly two decades; a professional and one of the most dedicated players in the history of the game, his presence on our team this year has been invaluable. Ray's decision is endorsed a hundred percent by myself and his teammates; he will receive our support in whatever he decides to do next.

"For me, personally, I will miss him; Ray was one of the players I latched onto in my college days and I have fond memories of watching him play for the Sonics then; he will always hold a special place in my heart and mind, and I can only hope that future members of the Sonics will look to him as an example of what to do and be in this league."

Allen's retirement announcement prompted responses from former teammates and coaches across the league.

"Best shooter I've ever played with," said Kevin Garnett. "Will never be another like him."

"Ray will always be part of me," said Doc Rivers. "What we accomplished together will define us for the rest of our life."

"Anytime you needed a shot, you could go to him and count on it," said LeBron James.

"Great teammate, great player, great guy. Gonna be missed," said Paul Pierce.

Allen hasn't decided what he plans to do after his retirement, but speculation has already begun that he will take a position somewhere in the league, either as a coach or part of the front office. Whatever his choice, the fans in Seattle owe him a debt of gratitude and should cherish every shot he takes from now until the season ends.

There will never be another one like him.

          League News

          February 5th, 2016

          By Vonny Lee

Injuries continue to hit teams in the NBA, and at the top of the injury list are the Warriors. After such good injury luck last season, this year has been the reverse -- the Warriors are down two of their most important players, as Iguodala has been lost for the next 2-4 months with a stress fracture. Bogut is still 1-2 months away from seeing the court, and the Warriors are sitting at 30-19 as the 6th seed in the ultra-competitive West.

The Warriors welcome the Sonics to Oracle Arena tomorrow night and would like a win; the question is whether they'll be able to pull one off with how beat up they are.

"Every team has injuries and that's why you have players you trust ready to go," said Coach Kerr. "We want to be full-strength for the playoffs and we're hoping we will be; until we get there, we just have to keep at it, keep our heads up."

The Warriors don't seem to be in danger of missing the playoffs -- the Suns and T'Wolves are both quite a few games behind them -- but they'd probably like to avoid a matchup with any of the top-three seeds.

Lakers Continue to Slide and Pray

It's not like LA to be hoping to lose as many games as possible, but this year is the year the franchise desperately needs to lose a lot of games in order to retain their draft pick. Sitting at 19-33, the Lakers are among the league's worst teams ... but not among its three worst teams. That dubious honor belongs to the Bucks, the 76ers, and the Kings.

The Lakers will likely not see their pick this year, which means the 76ers will be sporting two lottery picks (one likely in the top three, the other in the top-ten). The Bucks have had a disastrous season, their early playoff hopes dashed and changes to the roster -- and the coaching staff -- are possible. The 76ers continue to trust the process, but Philly fans are becoming impatient and attendance is at an all-time low for the team at home games. Hinkie remains numb on deadline deals, but multiple executives around the league expect him to pull the trigger on a deal that gets him a young star whom he can pair with Okafor or Embiid using Joe Johnson's contract, combined with picks.

          Celtics Struggle with Boogie

The first blockbuster trade of the season has produced negative results; Boogie and Boston are not gelling as fast or as quickly as many thought they would. Despite the remarkable talent of the center, the Celtics are 19-33, but have won four out of their last five games.

"It's a learning experience for everyone," said Coach Stevens recently. "He's adjusting to us, we're adjusting to him, and we'll get on the same page soon."

Celtics faithful are worried that the trade has ruined team chemistry, but there's still plenty of season left; Boogie and Boston could be okay or this trade might have been a misfire from Danny Ainge.

          Trade Market Goes Silent

The NBA trading season is about to go into overdrive ... at least, that's what some in the league are claiming. The trade season has been remarkably quiet for most teams as the NBA's expanding salary cap (going into effect this summer) makes salary dumps less necessary, negating a huge reason for trades in the first place. Still, some interesting players are on the market and rumors are abound on where they might go.

          1. Michael Carter-Williams (Bucks) -- MCW is looking to be moved yet again as the Bucks seem to be pinning the issues the team is having on him. As unfair as that sounds, they might be right; MCW's play has been less than stellar and the Bucks performed much better with Brandon Knight running the show. MCW is scoring only 11 PPG, averaging 8 RPG, but shooting at only 38 percent from the floor and a paltry 18 percent from deep.

"He's done there," said one NBA scout. "The Bucks need a scapegoat and it's him; they're the ones who made the trade in the first place, so they only have themselves to blame."

MCW's defensive style and inside play make him a poor fit for many teams in this day and age where NBA squads look for spacing and shooting from their point men, but some teams are showing interest.

"If I was a betting man, I'd say he gets dealt for an expiring and a 2nd rounder; maybe a fellow draft disappointment. The teams that want him are in the single digits, he's not a great fit for many squads, but he might have a place in the throwback teams; the Sonics, the Grizzlies, definitely, maybe the Mavericks," said one league executive.

The interest in MCW is very low across the NBA; he may not get moved at all but rather released during the offseason, as the Bucks can decline his team option. The Sonics interest in MCW seems curious at best, as he would represent a downgrade from Jarret Jack offensively, but be a defensive ace.

          2. Anyone on the Nuggets not Named Mudiay or Nurkic
-- the Nuggets are looking to move multiple players, from Faried to Chandler to Gallinari; all of which have multiple year contracts that pay over 10M each. It's a tough path for the Nuggets to find themselves on after the near success they had just a few short years ago, but the destruction of this team is imminent.

"They want picks, but they won't get any good ones; most teams looking at them know how desperate they are and they're unwilling to give them much at all. Waiting will only make it worse, as no one's in a rush to make the playoffs in the offseason; the urgency from any potential trade partner will be at its highest now, the Nuggets have to move before the deadline or they'll get nothing of value back for any of their guys," said one league executive.

The Nuggets possess three 1st rounders in this draft (their own, the Grizzlies and Rockets) and look to cash in on a full rebuild this offseason. They'll likely accept 1st rounders down the road, but teams that are bad now likely won't bet on the players Denver is offering.

"Everyone remembers how those guys quit on a coach, quit on the organization, and that's tanked their value more than anything; only strong, winning organizations will make a play for these guys at this point," said one NBA scout.

          3. Derrick Favors (Jazz) -- Derrick Favors continues to play poorly and Utah is the second-worst in the West (right behind the Kings). The Jazz are looking to move him for a pick and a piece, and seem to be ready to move on.

"He's just not performing; the money Hayward got, the way Hayward is playing, seems to really bother him," said one NBA scout. "When he's on the court and the ball doesn't come his way, but finds its way to Hayward, it's obvious he doesn't like it; playing with a defensive big like Gobert should allow him to thrive, but it's only hurt him. You don't pay a guy 12M a year for 13 points and 8 boards; that's money better spent somewhere else."

Favors is drawing interest from multiple teams in the league, and at the top of the list is the Dallas Mavericks.

"They're really feeling the pressure to get someone, anyone, to be that franchise face after Dirk goes; they like Favors, they like his play, and they want him and Parsons to be the duo that leads the team after Dirk retires. The Jazz don't like many of their players or their picks, but Dallas is really pushing; the Jazz might be able to extract a bounty from them they wouldn't get from anyone else," said one league executive.

Also on that list of interested teams are the Raptors and Blazers (though Utah would not like to trade Favors within their division, according to sources).

I think the guys are beyond that, now; KG and Pierce went and played for the woeful Nets (took that money, too) and KG is back with the T'Wolves and Pierce is back with Doc.

I think they're back to respecting one another, at least. Friendly, maybe not, but the heat (pun fully intended) between them is gone I feel. All three of those guys are almost at the end of their careers and they did something together that hadn't been done in a long-time in Boston ... I think that becomes more important as time goes on.

Re: Second Coming: A SuperSonics Return

              February 7th, 2016

The box score from last night's loss was still on his screen and he was still pouring over it, looking for where it went wrong -- he already knew the answer, though.

              It was the fourth quarter.

That's where the defending champs showed their mettle and took the lead into double-digits, never looking back. They weren't beat by Curry, they were beat by everyone else: Barnes, Thompson, Green, Speights. They all shot lights out, ending any chance for a comeback in that quarter, showing what a cohesive, consistent squad looked like. With the win, the Warriors were now 31-19, while the loss dropped the Sonics to 34-18, one game back of OKC for the 4th seed.

It wasn't a pretty game for Seattle; Max saw that from the beginning as Jack tried to dish out assists into lanes that didn't exist. Despite the turnovers from virtually everyone on the floor, the game was still close heading into the fourth.

But it got away and fast after that.

"Max?" 'Ricka poked her head in, the light of the sunset catching her right in the face. She stepped out of the way and blinked at him. "Ever heard of blinds?"

He blinked back at her, just becoming aware at how late it was getting. "Was up?"

She shot him a look. "I don't think you've left this room since yesterday." She sniffed at the air, then made a face. "Smells like I'm right."

He frowned, realizing she was 100 percent correct. He had had a shower installed in the bathroom in his office recently, and had a pull-out sofa couch as well; he was beginning to realize that he considered this place more his home than his actual home, which was just a small house -- three bedrooms, three baths, and three floors. It was inexpensive considering how he could buy a mansion with the money he had ...

But he had to build an arena for himself; he considered that his mansion. "You're right," he finally said, his thought processes slowed down to a crawl. "I was just thinking."

She smirked. "For over 24 hours? Your head must really hurt." She came over and sat on the edge of his desk, her smirk fading. "Have you talked with your brother yet?"

His face darkened. "I'm not thinking about that." He swiveled in his chair, facing his window, looking out onto the Seattle skyline. "My mind is focused on more important things."

              "What's more important than family?"

"Not him," he answered succinctly. He crossed his arms, feeling his muscles tense at the very idea of speaking with his brother.

One moment he was staring out his window, the next he was being spun around, coming to a stop, facing 'Ricka. "Damn you, Max, you can't just ignore him!"

He leaned back in his chair, his face stone. "Yes. I. Can."

She scowled, her emotions raw, the air electric with her anger. "He's changed."

              "And how do you know?"

"Because I've been talking with him!"

His eyes widened with surprise and he was left speechless. She was talking with Gill? Behind his back?

She slapped the armrests of his chair, snapping him back to the moment. "He really is different, Max. Not like he was when he got hooked on the booze ... he's like he was before all that, just ... better." She shook her head. "I can't really explain it well."

He bit his tongue, burying all the scathing remarks he could make. He forced himself to stand and past her, and began pacing, his eyes threatening to pop out of his head. "How ... why?" He turned to her, his anger boiling under the surface of every syllable. "Why?" he asked again.

She crossed her arms. "Because you weren't speaking with him. He reached out to me to get to you, Max."

That made him stop. "Gill ... reached out ... to you?" It didn't compute. It didn't make sense. Gill and 'Ricka had been cordial with one another, even shared a few moments of fun, but they had never been more than acquaintances. "It doesn't make sense," he said, shaking his head and resuming his pacing. "He's never cared about you or any of my friends."

She slapped her forehead so hard he thought it echoed. "How can you be so dense? How can you be so damned smart yet so damned stupid?"

Insulted -- and just as shamed -- Max blew out an annoyed sigh. "Elaborate," he said curtly, his patience nonexistent.

She shook her head at him, a small grin on her face. "You're thinking about the Gill we knew back in high school. The Gill who drank, and partied, and made your life hard from tenth grade onward." She cocked her head slightly to the side. "That's not him; we're not those people anymore, none of us are."

He stood up straighter. "I'm still me. You're still you. He's still him."

"It's old data," she said, her word choice making him take notice. "You know what old data is good for? Historical preservation; comparisons. Useful, but not the end-all-be-all."

It was a simplistic take, but one he agreed with. "It's all I have," he admitted, and he knew exactly what she was going to say next.

And she didn't disappoint. "Yes, and you need new data. And the only way you're going to get that is by talking with him."

He stared at the floor. He had reached the same conclusion.

She knew it, too. She walked over, took his hand, and gave it a firm squeeze. "Max, he's your brother; it's just him and your mom that's left of your family."

He felt his eyes begin to water. "He killed my father."

"No," 'Ricka said softly, "your dad's health was never good. Gill's behavior and his actions didn't help, but your dad didn't help himself."

He stared at her, rage building within him. "How could he have helped himself? How could he have stopped a heart attack, 'Ricka?! Was he just supposed to reach into his chest and fix it!"

She frowned at him. "Your dad ate like he was in college; he spent more time glued to his favorite chair than outside easily."

True, he conceded silently and he felt all the worse for having her remind him of it. He had forgotten about his father's poor diet and his bad habits; time and anger had buried it all. He shook his head. "He'd order pizza every Monday."

She smirked. "I always liked visiting your house on Monday; your dad never ordered small."

He laughed at the very idea of it. His father always ordered two extra-larges from the little pizza place nearest to their house; he probably kept that place in business single-handedly. "We had leftover pizza for two or three days."

'Ricka nodded. "Your dad was great ... but he didn't take care of himself. Gill's crap might have made things worse, but it was pretty bad before that. Right?"

Unhappily, he nodded. She was right. He looked up at her, forcing his eyes to meet hers. "What has he said about me?"

She smiled at him. "Let me set up a meeting so he can tell you."

Taking a breath, Max forced himself to nod. He didn't want to do this ... but knowing that his brother was actively seeking him out made it necessary.

She was right, he only had access to old data. If he was going to judge Gill now, he needed to know what Gill was now. There was only one way to determine that.

He just hoped he was strong enough to see it through.

Tough loss to the Warriors. Needed a little more from Ray Allen and that game would've looked different.

Totally. Ray got a bit hot late in the third, and he and Curry had a shootout from deep for about 30 seconds (two deep threes each, it was epic), but then Curry started setting up, then passing out mid-shot -- my defense didn't react fast enough and the Warriors just started getting buckets.

Ray played too many minutes, but I had to keep him in to keep Thompson contained (Crawford and Neal were both getting killed) -- the game would have been A LOT worse if Ray sat on the bench any longer than he did.

Re: Second Coming: A SuperSonics Return

                    February 9th, 2016

"So, they're offering?" Danny Ferry's voice was tinged with surprise and just a bit of hope.

"We're getting quite a few calls." Max pulled at his "I am Groot" shirt, tapping his pen on his desk with the other hand as the ideas processed through his mind. He had put feelers out for a few of the players on the team -- Bogdanovic, primarily. He was getting no minutes in Hollins' rotation and, though the 26-year old was being a good sport about it, his agent was pushing for a trade -- somewhere where he'd see minutes and be able to increase his value ahead of his free agency in the summer of 2017.

The team most interested in Bogdanovic? The Hornets. Drowning out East, they were six games under .500, 9th in the conference, a half-game back of the Pacers for the final playoff spot. The Hornets had made some big changes to their starting lineup over the last ten games, benching MKG in favor of Batum -- who was responding to the increased minutes with his best shooting of the season. Charlotte was 7-3 in those games and they were competing again.

The lineup changes didn't stop with MKG, who wasn't quite content with the sixth man role, it also extended to their other bench players -- Jeremy Lin and Spencer Hawes, primarily. Both had been stripped of their minutes and now were glorified cheerleaders.

Rich Cho, GM of the Hornets, had called Max up over the weekend to discuss some potential scenarios; they'd been trading calls back and forth for the last two days and Cho was implying, rather strongly, that the Hornets needed the playoffs: he needed the team to make it, else he was done in Charlotte.

Cho reeked a bit of desperation and Max wanted to pounce; he could make a big deal here.

"They're offering Hawes, Lin, and Kidd-Gilchrist," Max finally said, his pen tapping coming to a stop as he met Danny's eyes.

Danny was floored. "MKG? Are they out of their mind?"

Max had similar thoughts; he hadn't said it aloud when Cho told him whom he would be willing to consider in any deal, but he had listened. "It's what's not being said that worries me. MKG hit the bench and this team took off, going 7-3 over their last 10, a half-game back of the final playoff spot in the East." Max swiveled in his chair, jaw tensed. "Batum comes off the bench and is giving them the spacing they desperately wanted."

"MKG can't shoot a trey to save his life," Danny stated bluntly. "He wouldn't help our spacing that much, either."

"But he can stroke it from mid-range," Max countered. "He's just a year older than Jefferson, far more skilled at this point."

"And far more expensive; 13 million for a sixth man, starting next year." Danny shook his head. "He's cheap now at half that, he's tradeable now, but next year ... even with the cap increase, that contract is gonna be tough to move without taking back worse pieces." Danny narrowed his eyes. "Who are they asking for?"

Max stood and leaned against his desk. "We've batted around a few packages, but the current proposal is Neal, Jefferson, Bogdanovic, and McCullough for MKG, Hawes, Lin, and Troy Daniels."

Danny slowly lowered himself into the chair across from Max's desk. "They get cheaper, younger, and they don't suffer that large a drop-off. MKG is averaging, what, eight a game?"

"Eight points and boards; a near double-double." Max took a breath. "Jefferson is a rawer version of MKG -- likely three years away from being as good as MKG is now."

"And over 11 million dollars cheaper starting next season." Danny leaned forward. "He's offensively challenged but his defense is important."

"MKG is better at that, too." Max rubbed his forehead. He didn't expect this offer, hadn't expected Cho to even mention MKG. He called for Lin and Hawes -- if he pulled the trigger on this deal, he'd have to make some other trades. MKG would also likely torpedo any pursuit of Tristan Thompson in free agency, or any other big names.

"It's all worth consideration," Danny said finally. "But our team is humming, Max. We've got a good thing here and a big trade like this could burn us heading into the final stretch."

"It could also mean the difference between winning and losing our first round series ... especially if it's against the Thunder." The very thought of having the Thunder knock them out of the playoffs, after fighting all year to get here, was sickening. Bennett took their team, their players, and -- if he knocked them out of the playoffs -- he would take away their first postseason in years, too.

"We're still in position to make a play for the third seed," Danny reminded him. "The Hornets have cold feet on that big extension they gave Gilchrist; we take him and Hawes, we really do have limited cap space for the few summers; if this trade backfires, we'll be stuck with these guys for next season -- if we try to trade them, we'll get pennies back."

"Are they punting on the playoffs or are they trying to avoid being sunk by a discontented set of players?" Max met Danny's eyes. "Lin and Daniels are probably fine being cheerleaders; MKG has been a major player since high school, it can't be sitting well with him that he lost his starting job to a hobbled Batum. Hawes used to be good before the bench became his primary position; everyone we get could jump up and improve tremendously."

"Or they might not; they're on the bench for a reason, Max."

Max nodded slowly. "Make some calls, see what your sources say. I'll put this to the side for the moment ... we really only need Lin and Hawes, and we can grab those two for Bogdanovic and Neal I'm certain."

Danny stood up. "I'll do that; don't do anything hasty. If we really do pull the trigger on this, we'll shake up the core of the team for years to come ... they'll be no undoing it."

"We have eight days to figure it out, then; the deadline is on the 19th."

                      Nuggets Unload, Reap Cap Space

                      February 9th, 2016

                      By Vonny Lee

The Denver Nuggets managed to unload some of their more expensive players, but had to pay a price to do it.

The first trade sends Faried and the 2016 Grizzlies 1st rounder to the Kings for David Lee; Lee once more finds himself on the move, a month after being traded to Sacramento. Faried ends up playing for a familiar face in George Karl, who's undoubtedly in control of the Kings front office now. Faried is yet another player that Karl values from his time in Denver and the two got along rather well then; Faried is also only 26, which means he'll still be effective in the next few years as the Kings attempt to rebuild through the draft and internal improvements.

David Lee finds himself on his third team this season, one that is struggling and looks to continue to struggle -- insuring they'll pick high in this upcoming draft.

The next trade sent Wilson Chandler (and the 2016 1st rounder from the Rockets) to ATL for Sefolosha and pieces. The Hawks are currently second in the conference at 34-20 and made the move to shore up the weakness they at the three with Thabo playing significant minutes. Thabo has not been the same since his injury last spring. Chandler will bring better shooting and versatility to a Hawks squad that's gearing up for a deep playoff run.

The Nuggets receive expiring contracts (Thabo's in the summer of 2017) and much needed cap space. What they intend to do with it is a question only the front office of Denver can answer, but rumor has it that the Nuggets are gearing up for a run at Tristan Thompson, whom is increasingly looking like one of the better players available in this free agency class.

Finally, the Nuggets trade away Jameer Nelson and a future 2nd rounder to the Pistons for Joel Anthony. Stan Van-Gundy reunites with an old favorite in Nelson, who'll bring veteran savvy and understanding of SVG's offensive concepts to the young Pistons, while the Nuggets get a contract they ride out to till the end of the season, freeing up more cap space for the team.

                        Jazz Does Favors a Favor

                        February 10th, 2016

                        By Vonny Lee

Utah has just shipped away Derrick Favors to the Pacers for Ian Mahinmi, Chase Budinger, and the 2016 Pacers 1st rounder and the 2018 Pacers 1st rounder (top-5 protected). The Pacers are desperate to hang onto to their playoff spot, as they're only a half-game ahead of the Hornets and the Wizards, both of whom are on winning streaks; the Pacers have lost four in a row and are struggling. The trade brings an identity to the post that Indiana is lacking, namely someone the opponents have to respect on the low-block.

The trade for Utah was about grabbing picks and they did well in that; the 2016 1st rounder from the Pacers is completely unprotected, Larry Bird betting that it'll barely be out of the lottery. With the departure of Favors, the Jazz now can focus on the development of Gobert and Exum, their two young studs, as Hayward continues to carry the team.

Mahinmi and Budinger are both going to be waived immediately upon approval from the league office of the trade, according to sources.

Selling teams like Utah and Denver giving up deals like its Black Friday!

Denver acquiring youth and expiring deals trimming the unwanted fat from the team, while Utah getting something in assets even if it's little to nothing for a guy that probably wasn't going to resign there anyway.
