    Seattle awarded NBA Expansion franchise

Commissioner Adam Silver announced today that the NBA has awarded two new expansion franchises to the league to begin play in the 2016-17 season. Seattle and Kansas City were awarded the two franchises, after bids were put in by twelve different cities for the honor. This of course means that the Sonics will be returning to Key Arena this fall, while the basketball hot bed of Kentucky will finally have a professional team. The team has been awarded to the state and will play in the city of Louisville. The team name and logo has yet to be announced, Seattle also announced on the same day that they were hiring Glen Zariczny to be the new GM of their franchise. The NBA has set up an Expansion draft next week for both franchises. Eight players on each current roster will be protected from this draft.

NBA: Seattle Supersonics (R.I.P. 1967-2008); Miami Heat

    NBA Expansion Draft Results

Both teams get nostalgic as expansion rosters are announced

Nostalgia ruled the day at the NBA Expansion draft, as both teams put together rosters that should keep their new fans interested all season long. The first pick of the draft was Serge Ibaka, who ironically enough was an original Supersonics draft pick back in 2008. Seattle also drafted local legends Jamal Crawford, and Quincy Pondexter, and concluded the draft with an all time great nostalgia pick by selecting Gary Payton II, the son of who most consider the greatest player in Supersonics history. On the other side Louisville began their draft by taking Kentucky star Tyler Ulis, before going heavy on Centers, and point guards. Other notable players were NBA Legend Vince Carter (Sonics), NBA Champion Javale McGee (Sonics), Jeremy Lin (Liberty), and Rajon Rondo (Liberty).

Whiteside dominates for Heat as Sonics drop opener

Miami - Hassan Whiteside had a dominant game up front for the Heat collecting 27 rebounds to go with his 21 points for his first 20-20 double double of the season, as the Heat pulled away late to put away the expansion Sonics, in the two teams opening games of the season. The Sonics were scrappy, and held their own for three quarters with the Heat. Yogi Farrell, and Jamal Crawford led the way scoring wise with 15, and 14 points respectively, but Seattle only connected on 11 of 37 shots from three point land, taking entirely too many for that percentage, which led to fast breaks for the Heat that ultimately let them pull away. Seattle will now return home to open the brand new Amazon Arena against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday.

Timberwolves down Sonics in home opener

Seattle - The Sonics opened up their brand new state of the art arena in the Sodo District to an ecstatic group of 21,000 plus fans who couldn't be happier to see pro basketball finally return to the Emerald City. They wont mind nights like these in the first year or so, as the expansion Sonics restart their franchise. A win would've been nice, but a balanced effort, led by Andrew Wiggins 20 points, and Karl-Anthony Towns 18 point, 14 rebound effort gave the T-Wolves a 95-87 win over the Sonics. Milos Teodosic led the way for the Supes with 13 points, and Jamal Crawford chipped in 12 in his hometown debut. Seattle now will be right back here tomorrow night to face the Knicks in a back to back near the start of the season.

Jamal Crawford lights up the Knicks as Sonics get first win in new campaign

Seattle - Jamal Crawford put on a show for the Seattle fans scoring 37 points and leading the way, as the Sonics got their first win in their new incarnation with a 105-83 blowout of the New York Knicks. Kristaps Porzingis had 25 for the Knicks, who are beginning life without Carmelo Anthony who was dealt to the Thunder in the offseason. Cousins, Pelicans too much for Sonics

New Orleans - DeMarcus Cousins had an unreal stat line of 31 points, and 26 rebounds to go with his 5 blocks, and the Sonics shot an abysmal 6-36 from three, and 29-89 overall as they fell to the Pelicans 89-78 to fall to 1-3 on the year. Serge Ibaka led the way with his best game of the season with 19 points and 12 boards, and Dewayne Dedmon was a stud defensively with six blocked shots, but that was the extent of positives for the Sonics. They will look to turn it around on Wednesday when they back home to face the Phoenix Suns.

Sonics smash Suns to grab second win of the year

Seattle - Maurice Harkless had a season high 20 points, and six Sonics in total scored in double figures, as Seattle destroyed the Phoenix Suns 113-65 Wednesday night at Amazon Arena. Jamal Crawford had 19 off the bench with a sprained ankle he suffered Monday at New Orleans, as the Sonics held the Suns to an abysmal shooting performance, where their highest scorer amassed just 12 points. The Sonics made another change in the line up starting JaVale McGee, and bringing Dewayne Dedmon off the bench. It seemed to pay off as Dedmon was a spark plug collecting 12 boards off the bench for the Supes. Who now await Steph Curry, and the defending champion Warriors Friday night at Amazon Arena.

                  Sonics fall to Warriors 130-99

Oakland - Steph Curry scored 39 points in only 24 minutes, as the Warriors needed none of their starters in the fourth quarter, as they blew out the Sonics on Friday Night. Former Sonic Kevin Durant had 18 points, while Draymond Green scored 24 for the defending champs who got back on track after a stunning loss to the Phoenix Suns. No day off for the Sonics, as they travel back home to face the Sacramento Kings in a back to back tomorrow night.

Randolph, Kings dominate in second half to pull away from Sonics

Seattle - The Sonics were in charge for the first part of the game. Stretching their lead to ten points at one point, but the Kings surged, led by Zach Randolph's 21 second half points to go with his 17 rebounds, and the Kings knocked off the Sonics 102-97 at Amazon Arena. Milos Teodosic led the way for the Sonics with 20 points, including a hot 5-8 night from three point range, but it wasn't enough, as the Sonics fell to 2-5 on the season, and now will have a couple days off before their much anticipated matchup at home against the Oklahoma City Thunder. It will be the first time the former Sonics franchise has faced the reincarnated version. That game will be Tuesday night at Amazon Arena.

Westbrook scores 34 to lead Thunder to win over Sonics

Seattle - Russell Westbrook scored 34, and a returning Paul George had a double double with 29 points and 12 rebounds as the Oklahoma City Thunder defeated the Sonics 111-101 in the first match-up between the team that left Seattle 10 years ago, and the new reborn Supersonics. OKC pushed the lead out of reach in the first half, and Seattle never really threatened to make it close despite it being just a ten point final deficit. Seattle will now get tomorrow off before hitting the road for a back-to-back with the San Antonio Spurs Thursday night.

San Antonio - The Sonics got major contributions from their big men. Serge Ibaka had 14 points and 14 rebounds, while JaVale McGee turned in a 14-18 performance as Seattle out rebounded the Spurs 57-36 to get an upset win at the AT&T center 103-98. Spurs annihilate Sonics by 49

Seattle - The Spurs got a big time measure of revenge for the Sonics upset win on Thursday night. In Seattle on the second half of a home at home, the Spurs used blistering shooting, and repeated trips to the foul line to destroy the Sonics in front of their home crowd 148-99. Kawhi Leonard, and Rudy Gay led the way again for the Spurs with 35, and 29 respectively, but this time the supporting cast contributed as well, as the Sonics could not keep up with San Antonio's high powered offense. Seattle will now have Sunday off before a back-to-back at home starting Monday night with the Chicago Bulls.

San Antonio Spurs (5-4) at Seattle Supersonics (3-7)
