Re: You Don't Know Jack: A Pacers Story

    Ch. 58

It was our final game of December and the year 2019 and we got to face the Boston Celtics. The vaunted Celtics … there were people in the NBA who worshiped the ground the Celtics walked on. “Greatest franchise ever” and “blue-collar” and “gritty” were always words thrown around to describe them. Boston bothered me for a lot of reasons — of course, as a competitor, I could respect the long history of that organization. They were integral to establishing the NBA as the super-league it was.

But, *hit, they retire numbers of EVERYONE. “Were you a bench warmer on Bill Russell’s fifth championship? Did you sneeze the one time you got on the court? We’ll retire your number!”

When someone retires as many numbers as the Celtics (and the Lakers) did, they take away the meaning of retiring that number.

Add into that the fact they flaunted the number of title the organization won on the back of every jersey (a feature Gramps refused to embrace for us: “It’s a pride thing, an organizational pride thing — none of those guys wearing those jerseys won 17 titles. We don't need that junk.”) and I was looking to prove a point. Everyone recognized Kyrie Irving for helping Cleveland win a title, he was routinely named to All-Star and All-NBA teams, but he hadn’t done it all himself — he had LeBron.

The game started out with an electric opening introduction by our PA guy and then tipoff. We came out and it was an instant duel between Irving and myself … Kyrie was at the height of his powers and, to this day, he’s the man with the sickest handles I ever played against. He had the ball on a string and could do anything you wanted to it.

But Irving was also far too easy into baiting into taking shots. He LOVED to shoot the ball and didn’t enjoy passing nearly as much as I did … which worked to our advantage. Irving took the first three shots for the Celtics and hit two of them putting them up 4-0. I attacked the rim and got a quick And-1.

Then, I started firing off passes and those passes spawned more passes. We were making the extra pass — we’d run a screen, I’d pass to the screener, and then the screener would pass out — one, fluid motion of beautiful offense.

The Celtics weren’t fast enough on the switches to get back. We rained threes in the first half thanks to the extra pass and I kept the defense honest by getting inside; dunks, layups, and my personal favorite the mid-range pull-up. Irving was an ace scorer, but his defense was lacking … and I made sure to take advantage of that.

At the half, we led by 10 and we were eager to get back out there to increase that lead. Everyone was feeling the thrill of making the pass and guys were enjoying themselves. McHale didn’t even give us a speech or any real instruction, just wrote “PASS” on the whiteboard and grabbed some Gatorade.

In the third, Victor came alive — at least a little — he spent most of his night shutting down Jaylen Brown (who was angling for a big contract that Boston was seriously going to have to weigh against their cap sheet) but he had a spurt in the third where he put together a stretch you just loved to see: a dunk, a steal, and another dunk — he was feeling it.

In the fourth, we subbed in the deep bench guys and rode them pretty much the entire quarter. JULIO came in and did what he does: he was fearless in shooting the ball and though he missed most of his shots, he hit a gorgeous three that confused the *uck out of the Celtics.

Look at Tatum’s face: that man is thinking “Holy *hit, this white kid just nailed me” and he doesn’t know what to do. People constantly underestimated JULIO because of his looks, because of his lack of playing time at Kentucky his one year there … but, given a chance, the guy could play. He was fearless.

The starters just watched as the bench guys held onto to the lead and we got the win. Irving scored more than me, but I had way more assists; I was ridiculously pleased by that.

Re: You Don't Know Jack: A Pacers Story

      Ch. 59

In early January we welcome the Cavs to the Fieldhouse and, boy, was it a marquee matchup. Both teams were on fire and looked like they were in their stride — LeBron was having another good season (averaging 21.2 PPG, 8.8 RPG, and 7.4 APG — classic LeBron numbers, albeit a bit lower at this stage of his career — he was 35 after all). King James was, once more, leading the Cavs to regular season success but we all knew he was eying the playoffs. For the first time in what felt like years, LeBron seemed to have help at every position — Bledsoe and Melo both were averaging 18 per game, Wade was chipping in about 13, and Thompson was gobbling up boards and getting putbacks as he did.

But Thompson’s contract was up at the end of the year and all signs pointed to the Cavs letting him walk — they could grab a veteran center for cheaper in the flooded big man market (the position was stocked with so many cheap youngsters and veterans that it really squeezed the money-making ability for the guys still in their prime). We were only a game ahead of the Cavs and Cleveland was looking to make a statement in our building.

It was going to be a show.

In the first, Cleveland jumped out ahead thanks to an early 14-5 run. It was disheartening to see us come out so flat, but I guess that’s partially my fault — I celebrated my birthday the day before and, legally allowed to drink now, I … well, I might have overdid it just a tad and my teammates might have been right there with me. What can I say other than I was young — stupid, but not criminally stupid.

So we were all a little off our game and it showed in that first few minutes of the game. Once McHale took a timeout, chewed us out, and we all got some Gatorade in our system, we went to work. I busted out some trick layups

And the crowd got back into it. I fed Jabari early and often, as Melo was lighting us up but wasn’t playing effective defense against Jabari — our guy was just too damn fast. Unfortunately, Melo was a veteran and compensated for his lack of defense with offensive savvy: otherwise known as whining at the refs for fouls and getting those fouls called on Jabari.

By the end of the first Jabari had two, McHale sat him, and we were down 33-27. It felt bad but when the Pit Crew came in, they made the Cavs bench look like a bunch of JV squad members. Sabonis got some extra play time and the big guy hoisted up triple after triple and made more than he missed. He and Corey Joseph helped claw us back, get us the lead, and keep the Cavs back.

At the half we had the lead and Cleveland looked lost.

In the third, I picked up the pace. With Cleveland stunned and reeling, we took it to them repeatedly — the extra pass was our friend and we slung the ball around and around. It was infectious and after a particularly nice feed, I celebrated right in Bledsoe’s face … and he just glared.

In the fourth, we were up by 24 points and both teams had sent in the deep bench. McHale kept Victor out there, let him run the whole show and Victor went OFF in the fourth — playing against lesser competition, he feasted on easy looks and we — the bench, the crowd — enjoyed the show Victor put on for the home team. If there was anyone who understood Indiana basketball like I did, like Gramps did, it was Victor — he thrilled us with his skills and it was fun to watch.

We dominated the Cavs and we kept them under 100 points, which meant no practice the next day (that was the deal McHale made at the beginning of the season to get us all to put in a little extra on defense — it worked well for us that year). LeBron wasn’t pleased, but it was just the regular season — we’d see them three more times and it wasn’t anything to worry about yet for him.

Looks like your back on the winning ways and your starting lineups been rolling especially Tate. Looks like the Cavs may need to add some youth to keep up with the Pacers.

It was a fun beatdown. Cleveland really ran all over me in the first, but their subs came in and they just got throttled -- by the time the starters got back in it, we were rolling along and doing so in an unstoppable way.

I'm at the trade deadline now and finishing up the last of the deals -- big write up on that and a revisit of the 2016 NBA draft (seeing where everyone stands). Stay tuned.

Two serious wins. Tate is putting up ridiculous stat lines at the moment. Very good to see, he is getting the team back on track. Oladipo needs to be more consistent for you though.

You know, I think Oladipo would get more points and scoring if there were less mouths to feed on this team. There's going to be some drama in the offseason for the Pacers I feel, but we'll get to that eventually. I love Victor, he's the perfect compliment to Tate (and when he gets a chance to run the point at certain junctions in the game, he's super fun) but there will be changes in the offseason for Indiana -- it's hard to keep guys together, especially young guys, who want to strut their stuff and prove their worth.

                Ch. 60

We rolled through January and then February showed up — it was crazy how fast it snuck up that year. With how much fun we were having (and we were having some fun now that we had won a title), our team chemistry was sky high. People had thought us fluke champions, another 2011 Mavericks or an 2004 Pistons … nah, we weren’t flukes. We didn’t feel like flukes, we felt like we were only getting better. The injury bug had largely skipped us to that point in the year (a few minor scrapes in games and practices, but a few days of rest solved it), but it sure as hell wasn’t sparing other teams.

The Suns were suffering, as it seemed their destiny to. Chriss was out hurt which meant that trading him was off the table — Phoenix badly wanted to move on from him as Chriss’ wasn’t performing well and seemed to be bringing down the locker room, but they weren’t going to be able to move on from him till the offseason. Chriss was likely on his way out, as well as the entire front office and coaching staff — Sarver was tired of being the joke of the league and Devon Booker, so thrilled to get help in Fuller, was quickly becoming despondent about re-signing with the Suns; it was possible he would demand a trade in the offseason if something wasn’t done.

Meanwhile, Hayward was injured — again — for the Celtics and it was his ankle. Boston was worried that this was becoming a regular thing and, with their season going decently enough, they were worried that the injury would derail their season.

But the drama with the injuries had left the All-Star field wide open. I made it back there again for the third year straight and I was proud to represent our team. Admittedly, I was a bit let down that we didn’t get anyone else in there … Myles was right on the edge of getting in but just didn’t have the numbers.

I couldn’t figure out how Vucevic got in — sure, he was putting up nearly 18 and 10 a night, but the Heat were god-awful and yet the coaches, fans, and players rewarded him over Myles? It was just another thing to remind me how little respect our team had. Despite being at the top of the conference, we still had doubters and we still had people who believed us less than what we were.

Look at how well we were doing! Philly and everyone else was behind us and we were on quite a win streak. At the bottom of the East was the Heat and our 2019 ECF opponent, the Hornets — the wheels had come off in Charlotte despite Kemba coming back and the Hornets were major players at the deadline (as we’ll get to).

Out West, the Warriors were dropping nukes on teams every night — Steph Curry, now able to shoot to his hearts content without Durant there, was a supernova on the floor. The T’Wolves, Lakers, and Thunder were right there with them and the top of the West was elite. The middle? Soft. After the Sonics and Spurs, the rest of the conference was trying to keep above .500 to get themselves into the final two seeds. The Rockets, 2018 NBA Champs, were just not clicking as their veteran players looked to have aged a decade in the two seasons since they won.

At the bottom of the conference were the Kings — a regular staple of ineptitude — and Sacramento had choices to make. They, like the rest of us, were looking up at the Warriors and wondering “How?” Steph Curry, that’s how.

Those numbers are SICK. You wouldn’t think they’d be possible in today’s league, but Curry was on another level of scoring, a level not seen in many years. I was just honored to be in the conversation … I certainly didn’t feel like I was even close to an MVP, and I wasn’t sure if I ever would be (I liked passing the ball too damn much to take the shots necessary to get that trophy).

The rest of the award races were pretty tight.

Fuller was doing well in his rookie year and was likely to walk away with the ROY, if only because his other competition was less than stellar — sure you had Alfred Scott from the Clippers (technically a rookie after sitting out his first year, which he was pissed off about at that time) — but Fuller looked to be a lock. Kanter, his teammate and the sixth man of the Suns, was proving just how good a bench big could be. Sure he was getting paid starter money, but he was always giving high praise to the Suns organization — he might have been a suck up, but the Suns barely got any good press so Kanter was worth the money.

Jones looked to be the perfect point guard for Thibs and the Wolves (they were markedly better with him than Teague) and with how well the Wolves were doing, he was likely to win MIP. DPOY was between Gobert and Drummond — the two were locked into a big man battle for the thing and I wasn’t sure who was going to pull that out.

The trade deadline was busy that year, but mostly busy between teams that were already terrible. The first trade that went down was between the Grizzlies and Aztecs.

Mexico City got Baldwin, who desperately wanted out of Memphis and wanted to start somewhere — two things he got with the trade — and the Grizzlies got back Richardson, whom they liked and were planning to use as a swing guard off the bench; with Stanely Johnson an unrestricted free agent (and Memphis not interested at all in bringing him back), the Grizz wanted cheap youth to grow with their team — that was Richardson.

The Aztecs then went and got a young center to man the middle of their team.

Hermangomez was back under Coach Hornacek and it wasn’t a coincidence. The two had butted heads some in New York, but Hornacek knew what Hermangomez brought to the table — a solid double double every night and hustle. The Aztecs needed that, especially considering how the center they took in the expansion draft, Zizic, was not a fan of Mexico City and was publicly saying he would not re-sign with the team. The Aztecs headed this off and replaced him in season — a bold*ss move that spoke to how they weren’t fooling around — and Zizic was going to get renounced in the offseason.

Next up, the Hornets got busy trying to prepare for the next season and clear out some cap space.

Charlotte moved on from Batum, whom was medically cleared by both staffs to be traded — Batum was going to pick up his player option (25M) if he didn’t get an extension, and Charlotte just wasn’t willing to pay the injury prone forward that kinda cash. So, they shipped him out for a younger, healthier forward who wanted to start — Bogdanovic from Sacramento. The Kings happily made the deal because they got a 1st round pick out of it … and once Batum heard the news, he informed the Kings he would decline his player option — veterans were not a fan of Sacramento.

Next up, MKG was moved for … another Bogdanovic. Jordan apparently liked both of these guys and the Hornets odd fascination with solid white NBA players (Zeller, Kaminsky) continued as the Clippers unloaded a forward who shot well and played no defense for a forward who shot poorly and played great defense. MKG was only 26 and the Clippers promptly agreed to extend his contract. Stone and Harrell were basically a swap, though it was ironic that Stone ended up back in LAC after they punted on him a few years prior.

Charlotte had positioned themselves to tank this year and be better next season — not bad — while the Kings grabbed a draft pick and the Clippers got a younger, defensively sound forward who they would likely start some nights against the insanely good wings out West.

Finally, the Rockets made a move to bring in a friend of James Harden.

Toronto was likely to be out of the playoffs and in the lottery; not a bad result considering how stacked the draft was. With Ibaka’s money coming off the books this season, the Raptors traded him to the Rockets for the equally albatross-like contract of Ryan Anderson and picked up a 2nd rounder for their trouble. Ibaka was an upgrade defensively over Anderson and Mirotic (whom Houston had signed in the offseason for a veteran minimum deal) and his familiarity with Harden was seen as a plus.

Toronto was rumored to be looking to make bigger trade — Lowry or DeRozan or both — but got the two franchise starts to extend their contracts for three more years at a decent discount (roughly 9M-10M less than they were getting paid before). Neither player wanted to try free agency and neither wanted to move from the Raptors, and the Raptors — knowing how beloved they were — weren’t inclined to move them either unless they got a great offer. People that wanted to play in Canada was hard to come by.

Around the league there were a number of notable contract extensions — some guys got paid:

                SA extend Murray for 3yrs/$53M
                OKC extends Roberson for 3yrs(TO)/$24M
                GS extends Green for 4yrs/$106M
                MIL extends Maker for 3yrs(TO)/$48M
                CHI extends Dunn for 3yrs(TO)/$27M
                BOS extends Brown for 3yr/$55M
                SAC extends Hield for 4yrs/$44M
                BKN extends LeVert for 3yrs(TO)/$44M

                  AUTHOR'S NOTE:

After much internal debate, I'm going to end this story after the conclusion of the current in-game season (19-20). I don't know if it'll be a permanent end or not (I'm really attached to these guys, but also I need a fresh story to dig my teeth into), but there's another story I want to tell (based off the original idea I had for this) and I'm no good at jumping between two stories. My objective is to wrap this current season up in the next few days.

Oh nooooo!!! That's a pity man! But I get it! Will never the less be a fan of your next story!

Crazy big post in CH60. Lot to unpack.

Well done to Tate on making 3rd AS appearance! Yeah the AI for All Stars is funny, Turner should have been a cert to get in.

You must have injury frequency set to default? It can be very frstrating at times, I always turn it down to about 30. And maybe tweak a little higher after new year.

I see Jahlil is finally balling for the Bulls! Great, think he can do well there!

Kings will be Kings... Trading for Batum!!

Good move for Aztecs getting Hernangomez.

Steph is being ridiculous right now! I actually know his Godfather Gerald Kennedy, played at Virginia Tech with Dell and I coached some basketball camps with him over here in Ireland. Steph has been over but I wasn't involved then of course! Gerald did some work with Stephs shooting form, my facebook stream is full of videos that Gerald is sharing of Steph and the Warriors!

Steph is insane in 2K. He's unstoppable in sim games, the CPU just demolishes people with his shooting and if either Klay or Draymond are even sorta on, it's over.

As for my story, yeah, I like these guys but I just need a fresh project. The games are fun but the thrill is just not quite there ... I have an idea on how to really make things interesting for the next story, but I need a bit of time to polish it.

I hate to see this go away but it sounds like something else will be coming down the line. Now you just have to close it out in style with back to back.

I always enjoying reading your trades and its helped rub off on me.

Thank you good sir. I have really enjoyed this dynasty but I have my sights set on a new project that's really speaking to me right now.

And the trades are one of my favorite parts of the season -- always fun to reshuffle teams and see what ends up happening.

                            Ch. 61

We finished the regular season with over 50 wins again, albeit losing our last two games and — due to the tiebreaker — having to take the 2nd seed as opposed to getting the 1st. No matter, as we were superbly confident heading into the playoffs — our team was uninjured and we had a bracket full of familiar foes. If we were going to repeat as champs, we were going to have to go through a gauntlet. The playoffs were full of fascinating matchups.

The dregs of the league were exactly what everyone thought they’d be — the Heat, Kings, and Aztecs were all the leaders for the first overall pick.

But the playoffs were where the action was at.

We were matched up against the Hawks (LOL) and had either the Wizards or Pistons after us. On Philly’s side, they got the Nets (who barely beat out the Celtics for the final seed) and then either LeBron or the Greek Freak; frankly, I was happy to be where we were as I vastly preferred beating the tar out of old foes like the Pistons or Wizards rather than take on LeBron or the Greek Freak potentially.

Out West, the Spurs and Warriors met again but the real action was the Thunder/Sonics match. The Seattle fans were drooling over the chance to knock OKC out of the playoffs and with the injury to Kevin Love (gone for the season), the Thunder looked vulnerable.

On the awards front, it was pretty much straight chalk all the way through — no real surprises, other than me finally being recognized as an All-NBA player; about damn time.

                              Ch. 62

We took Games 1 and 2 from the Hawks like candy from a baby — winning each game by at least nine points. In Game 3, we came out looking to bury the Hawks in a 0-3 hole and I came out firing. I didn’t want there to be any doubt that the Atlanta Hawks — even with my former teammate, the Manimal, giving them the lowdown on us — were not in our league. We were title contenders and they were happy to be in the playoffs.

So I game out and scored the games first eight points — one sweet dunk and two triples that quieted the building.

The Hawks second unit picked up the slack from the first and they made the game a lot closer than I figured it would be at the end of one, as we only led 30-28. But in the second we found our rhythm — largely thanks to Sabonis just stroking it from all over the floor — and we walloped them. We went into halftime ahead by 12 points and our defense was frustrating the hell out of the Hawks.

In the third, we put the game out of reach — it was a collective effort as we hustled, fought, shot, and ran all over the Hawks, silencing the arena and we walked away with an easy win. We barely tried in the fourth, truth be told — we were just waiting for the final horn and then we’d be done.

We swept Atlanta and it was easy. Our next opponent wouldn’t be.

The Pistons had beaten the Wizards and we were, once more, matched up with one of our chief rivals. LeBron took down the Greek Freak in sxi, Philly dispatched of the Nets in the same amount, and out West the Warriors romped over the Spurs and the Sonics buried some demons by kicking OKC out of the playoffs — setting up a battle between Durant and his other former team.

In the lower portion of West bracket, the T’Wolves easily beat the battered Jazz and the Lakers got everything they could handle against the Rockets, who nearly pulled off the upset.

Round two was going to be a battle between title contenders all.
