    Legends Start Somewhere

A College Hoops 2K8 Coaching Legacy

Welcome to my College Hoops 2k8 Coaching Legacy! This is my first time venturing into the Basketball Dynasty section as I am usually found hanging out in the Football Dynasty land. Now that hoops season is in full swing, I am entrenched in all that is College Basketball. This legacy is going to be a tad difference than most of the other pieces of art you find on here. I really enjoy playing every single game & I tend to burn myself out if I have to do recaps and write ups after I fire up the box for an hour or two. What I focus on is the big picture... I am talking about National Champions, National Players of the Year, Mid-Major Players of the Year, All-Americans, Conference Champions, Conference Players of the Year, my own Coaching Record, Conference Record, guys I have recruited, Season Stats, etc. I will be posting a series of "Headquarters" which will house the necessary stats I intend to follow. Following these headline posts will just be posts I make from time to time detailing how things are going or how I am feeling. I will sometimes post updates after a couple of games played or a quick offseason synopsis. I am currently in Year 3, so I have accumulated two season's worth of info so far & have added it to the headline posts. I hope you all enjoy. Below are some things I have answered to give you an idea of what my legacy looks like in game.

Who am I starting with & why?

I have decided to start my legacy with the University of California Riverside Highlanders. It's ironic how popular of a choice this team is on these forums & in this game as I didn't even know people liked them until after I had started using them (yes, I am that dude telling you he listened to the popular radio song years ago, haha!). UC Riverside is a bad team from top to bottom in a conference that really has not done much since, well, ever. Nonetheless, the Big West is nestled in one of the most talent rich states in the country & there is no shortage of players we can go after, so that makes it a ton of fun. Without a true PG, SF, or C, the UCR roster is pretty dang thin.

House Rules? Difficulty? Do I play games? Roster Pack?

I run 13 minute halves & play every single second of them. I am a big time stats junkie & even having one simulated game keeps me up at night. I play on All-American (I believe that's the difficulty...it is whatever is second highest) with no other slider adjustments. I have found my game scores to be very reasonable, mostly in the 60's and 70's, occasionally in the 90+ range when I am playing a very high tempo team or facing a Top 25 Power team. I have even had some defensive grinders in the 50's, so I feel it's very well balanced. I try to not use any set plays because I feel like I have to work harder to move the ball around and generate open looks. I will sometimes try and steal inbound passes, I am just being honest. I have computer generated player names instead of downloading a roster pack. This unfortunately takes all the coaching names out of the game, so I will not be following what coaches do.

    History starts NOW

This is a common thing to all the dynasties I run. What I mean by this is that I will not recall what Duke did in 2000 or what happened in the Big West in 2012. I view the starting point in my legacy as the starting point in history. I WILL, however, still consider blue bloods to be blue bloods & recognize conferences that aren't very good. Just because a lower tier conference has a couple teams in the Big Dance doesn't make them a new Power Conference, get the gist?

    Last, but not least

At the end of the day, this is a video game & I am going to let it be the animal it wants to be. If the game wants a Mid-Major to recruit a Top 3 class ten years in a row, I'll let it. If I go undefeated a couple times in a row, I am not going to worry about it. I love watching how things turn out over time and I always say this "The impossible is just reality that has not yet happened". Hope you all enjoy, I know I will.

Re: Legends Start Somewhere (CH 2K8)

That is all the space I need, feel free to post! I have reserved open slots for teams & conferences if I ever move on from UC Riverside. My intent is to one day get a more prestigious job, but I am not sitting here going through the motions in the early years just to get to a better school. If I end up staying eight years at Riverside, it is what it is. College hoops isn't like football where you are practically non existent on the national scale if you're a mid-major (Group of 5) school, so that intrigues me a lot.

Just to give an idea of my ambitions, here's a couple of the schools I'd like to coach at, one day:
USC or UCLA - I'd like to be at either one of these California powerhouses.
Kansas - I've always had a like for the Jayhawks, dating back to March Madness 2005
                        Purdue - Boiler UP!

                        Okay, okay, enough dreaming...

Anyways, looking forward to putting out some updates soon enough!

Edit: I have not yet added all the conference champions for the first two years, both regular season & tournament. It's a lot to add so I'll do it sometime soon.

Thanks buddy, enjoyed writing those snippets. Now I can house my stats and info here and put those short write ups in my own thread!

                            Update on UCR...

We are currently 5-4 in the Big West, riding a five game win streak! After four straight losses in conference play, we completely found our groove and are clicking. In this stretch we've beaten Long Beach State (8-1) and UC Santa Barbara (6-3), two teams we would not even been competitive with in Year 1 or Year 2. Our sophomore PG Shaun Frey is averaging 19.3 PPG and 5.6 APG, looking to possibly win a back to back Big West Player of the Year award for the Highlanders. This little run is a massive improvement after winning a combined 6 conference games in my first two seasons!

So, uh, this is kind of embarrassing...let me explain:

We finished up Year 3 at UCR with a 9-20 overall record, 7-9 in the Big West, good for 7th in the conference. We made the conference tourney for this first time & took on #2 seed, UC Irvine (10-6). It was a great game & both of us battled, but Irvine sealed the deal late in the second half with a string of threes to give them a 8 point lead with a minute to go. As the dust settled in the Big West, UC Davis (6-10) upset UC Irvine (10-6) to win the conference and get an auto bid to the dance.

I was feeling pretty good at this point, 7 conference wins, one more than the combined total from Year 1 & Year 2. Sophomore PG Shaun Frey took home the Big West Player of the Year award, averaging 19 PPG, 3.1 RPG, 6 APG, and 1.5 SPG. He was a stud this year. Freshman PF Cornelio Morrissette won Big West Freshman of the Year on 11 PPG, 5.6 RPG, and 3.9 APG. Both made All-Conference and Morrissette also made Freshman All-Conference. So, all in all, great season, right?

Nope. I was politely informed I was fired from UC Riverside & would need to find another job in the coaching carousel. Guess the progress I made in the third year wasn't enough, okay, not going to argue, is what it is. Well, wasn't offered another job & my legacy ended. Yep, you heard it right, the game ended my legacy...I didn't even know that was possible!

Haha, so, now we are here.
