One Last Shot: Jordan's Final Chapter.

One Last Shot: Jordan's Final Chapter.
    September 25th, 2001

WASHINGTON -- The worst-kept secret in sports is out: Michael Jordan will play again in the NBA -- and not just for one season, but two.

After months of hints, smiles and winks that kept his fans on edge, Jordan finally announced his comeback Tuesday, saying he would play for the Washington Wizards through 2003 and donate his salary the first year -- $1 million -- to victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

"I am returning as a player to the game I love," said Jordan, 38 and three years removed from what seemed to be a storybook ending to an unparalleled career. "I am especially excited about the Washington Wizards, and I'm convinced we have the foundation on which to build a playoff-contention team.

"The opportunity to teach our young players and help them elevate their game to a higher level, and to thank the fans in Washington for their loyalty and support, strongly influenced my decision," he said in a statement issued through his management agency.

The five-time league Most Valuable Player, who retired for a second time in 1999 after leading the Chicago Bulls to their sixth title of the decade, made it official after clearing up a licensing issue with one of his sponsors -- a disagreement that delayed the announcement by a day. NBA rules also required Jordan to sell his ownership stake in the Wizards.

Jordan never completely ruled out a comeback when he retired in January 1999, hedging his bets with the statement that he was "99.9 percent" certain he would never play again. Leaving the door open, even by one-tenth of 1 percent, meant Jordan could slip back into a uniform without going back on his word.

    Now, he has.

"I am happy to welcome Michael Jordan, the player, back to the NBA, although, as commissioner, I am sorry to lose him in the board room," NBA commissioner David Stern said. "Michael has always brought joy to basketball fans around the world, and, in these difficult times, we can all use a little more joy in our lives."

Jordan's announcement was sure to hearten a city -- and entire country -- shocked by terrorism. Washington's economy has suffered since the Sept. 11 attacks, with Reagan National Airport remaining closed and hotel bookings far below capacity.

"This is certainly an extremely important moment in the history of our franchise, however our excitement is muted by the world events that surround us," Wizards owner Abe Pollin said.

"The greatest player in the history of the game is joining my team, and for that I am extremely honored and pleased."

Jordan will be in the unusual position of playing for the coach he hired, Doug Collins, who joined the Wizards in April and also coached Jordan for three seasons with the Bulls in the 1980s. Jordan will share the court with players he signed, drafted and traded for, including high school sensation Kwame Brown, selected No. 1 overall by the Wizards in June, and veteran forward Christian Laettner -- a graduate of Duke, the archrival of Jordan's alma mater, North Carolina.

          Wizards Sign Patrick Ewing

          Wizards sign Patrick Ewing.

          September 26th, 2001 | by espn.com

WASHINGTON, DC. The Washington Wizards, hoping Patrick Ewing can solve their problems in the post, signed the free agent center to a contract Wednesday. "It wasn't a money issue," Ewing said. "It's about being somewhere where you're wanted, somewhere where you can make a difference, somewhere where you can be happy. After all those year's playing in Georgetown, I'm finally home."

Shortly after signing Michael Jordan, it was of no surprise that Ewing, 38 followed suit. Ewing is an 11-time All-Star and has been a past teammate of Jordan's with the Dream-Team in 1992 being the highlight. "We have a lot of young talent on this team, but we did need some experience. For Kwame Brown, Patrick can be instrumental to his development. Ewing is a pro's pro," said Wizards coach Doug Collins.

"We needed guys who have gone through the wars of the playoffs, who could tell our young guys what it's going to be like. In adding Michael and Patrick this week, we couldn't ask for better." Ewing played with the New York Knicks for 15 seasons before being traded to Seattle last summer.

With the Sonics, the 7-foot Ewing posted averaged 9.6 points per game, 7.4 rebounds per game and shot 43 percent. Ewing said his advanced age won't be a liability. "Age is a state of mind," said Ewing, who turns 39 on Aug. 5.

"Naturally, I'm not the same athlete I was when I was younger, but in some ways I think I'm better than I was then. I know the game better; I'm mentally stronger." said Ewing.

"Watching the Wizards play last season, I'm like, 'This team, it needs more help in the post'" Ewing said. "I think I will fit in good on this team." On draft night, the Wizards selected High Schooler center/power forward Kwame Brown, a 7-footer, with the #1 pick in the draft. Joining them in a 3 man center rotation is 3rd year pro Jahidi White.

The Wizards need a lot more than a center this year. But with Jordan and Ewing's experience, they may help guide the Wizards in the right direction this season. Christian Laettner resigned with this Wizards this summer to a 4 year deal. The Wizards don't seem to be finished reshaping their roster yet. Watch this space.

Oh hell yes! This is a great foundation for a story, love the idea of Jordan getting with Ewing -- Jordan never had a dominant post player to work with during his prime years and though the two vets are well-past that, their combination might bring out the best in them.

Really excited to see what you can do with these final years and how you can change NBA history. So is the idea to just play MJ's final seasons, or to play those and then build the Wizards after?
Patiently waiting for a New York Jets title.Wish me luck.

It's to play Jordans final seasons again, and see where that takes him, be it coaching, GM or ownership.

Wizards add more Experience, Sign Chris Mullin

Mullin reverse's retirement decision, signs with Wizards.

                    September 28th, 2001 | by nba.com

Mullin had agreed to a one-year contract with the Golden State Warriors last season, assuring them he would finish his NBA playing days in the same place he played his first 12 seasons. The four-time All-Star was waived by the Warriors two weeks ago. Mullin had been planning a retirement party at this season's opening night, but that was abruptly cancelled when he received a call from the Wizards.

Mullin holds the Warriors franchise records for games played (787) and steals (1,344), while ranking fourth in points (16,120), fourth in assists (3,127) and second in 3-pointers (571).

Mullin said it was "a special day for everyone in the NBA when Jordan announced his return, I just had to be part of it."

"He's in the twilight of his career, but I think he has his own short-term goals," coach Doug Collins said. "Also, the long-term situation is important to Chris." We view him as someone who could join our coaching staff after he finally retires.

Mullin's return came together last week when he was in the DC Area. He scrimmaged with Jordan and several Wizards players and discovered he was energized by Jordan's fountain of youth and the opportunity to do something special with the Wizards this season.

"I've known Chris for a very long time and consider him like a brother," Jordan said. "Over the years and over the past months, we have talked about what his game plan was. Patrick and I had a good time reminiscing with Chris about the 92 Olympics. We talked last week while he was here playing with some of the guys."

Collins said five players asked him to sign Mullin and that he expects Mullin to serve as a mentor for young guard Rip Hamilton.

"I was taught a long time ago that you listen to your players," Collins said. "That meant a lot in the decision-making process."

Mullin said he isn't sure what his role will be with the Wizards, but "there's not a lot I haven't done, from being the No. 1 option to the No. 12 option."

"One night it might be a flashback night, and I'll get hot," he said with a grin.

Mullin, 37, averaged more than 25 points for five straight seasons with the Warriors, including a career-high 26.5 in 1988-89. With Tim Hardaway and Mitch Richmond, he formed the "Run T-M-C" unit that brought Golden State some of the best times in its fairly ordinary recent yers.

Mullin, an All-NBA first-teamer in 1991-92, has been a fan favorite in Oakland ever since he was the seventh overall pick in the 1985 draft. He even received standing ovations when he returned from a stint in alcohol rehab that caused him to miss 22 games in 1987-88.

A two-time Olympian and a member of the original Dream Team in 1992, Mullin was traded to Indiana for Erick Dampier and Duane Ferrell in 1997. As usual, the Warriors were going nowhere, and Mullin wanted a shot at an NBA title. He played for three seasons under coach Larry Bird, a Dream Team teammate and made the NBA finals.

Last season with the Warriors his playing time was heavily reduced to 18.7 minutes but he still managed to lead the team in 3 point percentage. His free throw percentage remained in the 80's and was only bested by Chris Mills. But what didn't show up was the fight he still showed on every possession. His 0.5 blocks per game and 0.8 steals per game showed the defense hadn't gone yet either, but teammates felt he was a better presence on that end than the numbers showed.

"Last week while I was here in DC, I got a good feeling about the guys here," said Mullin, sounding like a future coach. "I see players that want to be here, and I have the feeling they want direction.I think we can definitely make the playoffs this season. Which would be amazing considering they had the worst record in the league last season."

Wizards Roster set for Opening Night

Wizards Roster set for Opening Night 2001.

                      September 29th, 2001 | by slammagazine.com

There used to be five Wizards fans, and now there's suddenly five million. You'll be able to tell the real five by the tears of joy rolling down their cheeks this week, but they're glad to have you along anyway -- even if you've never heard of Joe Pace.

It's been 22 years since anyone's paid attention to their franchise, but Michael Jordan has decided to run with them, and that can only mean one thing: THE WIZARDS ARE IN THE LEAGUE AGAIN!

They're usually only on national TV once a year -- for the draft lottery -- but now we will be chronicling their every move, and, trust me, you're going to need a little background.

So, let us re-introduce the franchise to you casual fans: They are the Washington Wizards/Washington Bullets/Capitol Bullets/Baltimore Bullets/Chicago Zephyrs/Chicago Packers and God-knows-where-elses, and I don't think they've ever had one of their players pose for a bobble-head doll. Now they have 3 former Dream Teamer's on their roster.

They've played exactly one playoff series since 1988, and it lasted about a weekend. The first two times they made the NBA Finals, in '71 and '75, they got swept. They finally did win one, in '78, but most of the playoffs were on tape-delay.

More recently, they've made a lot of gaffes, as you're well aware. They have recently traded Chris Webber for Mitch Richmond, and Rasheed Wallace for Rod Strickland, and if you take both of those back, they could be in the Eastern conference finals or semi-finals the last two years. Truly a 'What If?' franchise.

But all that's moot now, because the Wizards are what they are: awful. On the other hand, despite what all the pundits say, with the right dose of Jordan, they may be able to pull something together.

So here's the all-important rundown of Michael's newest squad:

Starting Point Guard: Surprisingly it will be Richard Hamilton. He can handle the ball shockingly well, and, in limited time at the position in the last two years, he scored at will. And against zones, he will be lethal. The only concern will be the new eight-second rule when it comes to bringing the ball up the court. But as they used to say in junior high, a pass beats a dribble any time. Richard knows this.

Starting Shooting Guard: Courtney Alexander. He is a big-time scorer, and a Jordan favorite. He has an attitude (we hear even Jerry Tarkanian at Fresno State thought he was a bad kid), but he can get his own shot any time, and, at this position, that's all that matters.

Starting Small Forward: No. 23. He will post up more, and play some point forward at times, but if you have Hamilton and Alexander as starters, he won't have to score as much. In fact, his biggest impact may be defensively, plus all the intangibles. He'll still get the calls from the refs. He'll still draw double teams. He'll still be like Mike.

Starting Power Forward: Christian Laettner (with an asterisk): He will begin the season as the starter, but maybe not finish as one. Rookie Kwame Brown was promising in summer league and may eventually step in for him, and there's also the remote possibility of signing Dennis Rodman. But Laettner can still hit the open jump shot, and will cheat and grab your jersey to attain better position under the boards. And he won't act up with Jordan around. They know each other from the Dream Team days.

Starting Center: Patrick Ewing. He is the wrong side of 38 but he still know's how to play. Ewing was and still is a warrior. He knows how to win, but his main role this season will be to give good minutes and mentor Kwame Brown. Easily still the most skilled big man Jordan has ever teamed up with.

Sixth Man: Kwame Brown. The rookie will be the team's most athletic player, other than Jordan. Under Ewing and Jordan's mentorship, look for this kid to learn the ropes quickly.

Backup Point Guards: Chris Whitney will be a zone buster, and potential starter over Hamilton at the point. Tyronn Lue is an unknown. He was somewhat of a deterrent to Allen Iverson in the NBA Finals last year, but the Lakers didn't flinch when he threatened to leave. So the jury's out.

Backup Shooting Guard: You know Jordan was going to keep a Carolina guy around. Hubert Davis can still fill it up.

Backup Forwards: Popeye Jones will be an important rebounder, because Michael knows you need the ball to score. Chris Mullin has been coaxed out of retirement by Jordan. Mullin will provide 15 - 20 minutes of hard work on both ends, but will be most effective in spacing the floor. Etan Thomas, a lottery pick by Dallas a year ago, is a wild card, because he has an NBA body with skills.

Backup Center: Jahidi White. He can't guard Shaq and he can't stay out of foul trouble very often, but, as rotund as he is, he's a surprising shot blocker and leaper. He's no worse than Bill Wennington or Luc Longley or any of those other stiffs that Jordan won titles with. Will split minutes with Ewing.

Coach: Doug Collins knows what he's doing. He knew how to disguise a zone when it was illegal, and now he'll be able to play one for real. They won't be outcoached, for the first time in a while.

Front Office: He's in the front court.

If you're not ecstatic about the team we just named, think about it: How much talent did Jordan have around him in Chicago? During his first three titles, he had a young Scottie Pippen and a young Horace Grant and role players. Of course, Michael was young then, too. And during his last three titles, he had Pippen and Dennis Rodman and Toni Kukoc, plus, again, role players. The Wizards are not going to win any titles this year, but they're not gonna lose 50 either. Hallelujah!

The Wizards haven't been this excited about anything since Hamilton represented them in the All-Star game last year (okay, it was in the 2-Ball competition, but at least they had someone there).

So I know I speak for all of the real Wizards fans when I say to everyone else, welcome aboard. Oh, and the Wizards team colors are blue, black and bronze.

Ah, those books are GOLD. Bill Simmons "Book of Basketball" is also a must-read too, he wrote it in 2011 I think, but there's such a great amount of history and fascinating "What If?" scenarios he proposed ... great stuff.
                            Any comments are welcome.

A look into Wizards final practice before tip-off.

                              September 30th, 2001 | by espn.com

WASHINGTON -- Michael Jordan's comeback is almost here.

Only 3 days before the Wizards open the 2001-02 season against the Philadelphia 76ers and Iverson, Jordan is still working hard on his game.

"Michael was Michael; he looked good," guard Chris Whitney said. "He didn't even have to try, the way he moved, used screens and those type of things. He looked good. He went as hard as he could go."

Jordan survived plenty of rough contact too, getting knocked to the floor when the practice went full court. No. 1 overall pick Brown, who signed a three-year, $11.9 million deal, said Jordan showed no fatigue at all in the 2 hour session.

"He just got up and played harder. He's Mike," Brown said. "You can't keep up with Mike. He's a step ahead of everybody. With two, three years off, it doesn't matter."

"He's feeling much better now, and I think he's itching to start getting back into the swing of things, playing some real games." coach Doug Collins said. "But I know his spirit and heart is to start pushing it and to get himself into condition. With him, I just sort of sit back and watch. With him being president of the team, I think we'll keep two spots open for him."

Jordan tried to keep his workouts earlier in the offseason a secret, leaving by side door's while reporters were kept waiting in a hallway outside the Wizards practice court. He never made himself available for comment. Collins didn't even mention that Jordan had practiced, leaving the players to spill the beans. But now the secret is out and everyone can sense a weight has been lifed off Jordan's shoulders.

As for Kwame Brown, the first high school player to be drafted No. 1 overall, he ended practice by making his first two clutch NBA shots. Alone at the free throw line, he sank two free throws that kept the team from running six wind sprints.

Brown was immediately surrounded and congratulated with hand-slaps and high-fives, first and foremost Patrick Ewing.

"Nobody likes to run," Brown said.

Brown said the thing that needs most work still is his conditioning.

"I'm almost ready to compete at an NBA level," Brown said. "I didn't know the game was this fast. On TV, it looked real slow. I thought college was faster. But guys like Pat, Mully and Jordan are still darn fast and they are at the tail end of their 30's."

Brown is a 6-foot-11, 240-pound center from Glynn Academy in Brunswick, Ga. At 19, he is the youngest player taken with the first overall pick. His first real game action comes next week against the 76ers.

Meanwhile, Collins confirmed the team has not yet decided on the starting line-up for game 1, but that recently signed point guard Tyronn Lue would certainly have some time guarding Allen Iverson.

Lue played strong defense on Allen Iverson in the NBA Finals. He averaged 3.4 points and 1.2 assists in 38 games for the Los Angeles Lakers last season.

Lue would share point guard duties with Whitney, who said he had recovered from the ankle injuries that bothered him last season. Rip Hamilton is also a contender to start at Point Guard.
