Knicks Select Edwards 1st Overall, Celtics Acquire Aldridge

The New York Knicks selected Georgia guard Anthony Edwards with the first overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft as they look to jumpstart their rebuild in the Eastern Conference. LaMelo Ball, the youngest of the three Ball brothers, was selected second overall by the Sacramento Kings.

Surprisingly, big man James Wiseman dropped all the way down to the Orlando Magic at 6th overall as teams selected smaller, skilled players ahead of him. Wiseman was considered by many to be a potential first overall pick, but with a draft class deep with scoring potential, he saw himself slip further down the draft board that had been anticipated.

While almost all the teams were drafting players to improve their future, the Boston Celtics made a splash on the trade market, acquiring big man LaMarcus Aldridge from the San Antonio Spurs in exchange for the 18th overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft as well as the Celtics' 2024 second round pick. The Celtics were unable to live up to expectations last season, and hope that Aldridge will provide them with the veteran presence and scoring touch that can take the team to the next level.

The Toronto Raptors selected Argentinian guard Leandro Bolmaro with the 30th overall pick. The 20-year-old guard has long been considered one of the best prospects in Argentine basketball, one of the key players of the 2000 class, a group of players with a ton of potential and a real buzz in Argentina. Bolmaro only had to play a few games in the Argentine National League and it was enough to be signed to a multi-year contract by Spanish side Barcelona in 2018.

With their second round pick, the Raptors selected Louisville small forward Jordan Nwora. Nwora operated as Louisville’s go-to scorer over the past few years, finishing his junior season with averages of 18.0 points, 7.7 rebounds, 2.5 triples, 1.3 dimes, 0.7 steals and 2.1 turnovers. He’s got solid size and a pure shooting stroke, but will struggle to crack the rotation as a rookie on a team with championship-or-bust aspirations.

      Raptors Exercise Option On Davis

The Toronto Raptors announced that they have exercised their 2020-21 player option on guard Terence Davis II. Davis signed on with the Raptors as an undrafted free agent before the start of last season and ended up playing a much bigger than expected role in Toronto's run to a second straight NBA championship.

The Raptors scouting department clearly found another diamond in the rough with Davis who, similar to Fred VanVleet, has worked hard to become an everyday impact player for the Raptors. The Raptors will reward Davis with a $1.52M salary for the 2020-2021 season and will hope that the guard can continue to develop going into his second year with the club.

Interestingly enough, the Raptors drafted shooting guard Leandro Bolmaro this past week. While Bolmaro is obviously not expected to instantly contribute at the NBA-level, the Raptors now have a stockpile of guards that possess the potential to become major contributors down the line. While it is too early to think of a potential trade situation, starting shooting guard Fred VanVleet will become one of the top free agent guards available on the market, leading many to speculate whether or not the Raptors intend to retain his services.

Davis, Derozan Decline Player Options, Become Free Agents

Los Angeles Lakers superstar Anthony Davis has officially opted out of his contract and is now a free agent. While it is largely expected that Davis is simply opting out to sign a more lucrative deal with the Lakers, today's announcement makes it a formality. It shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone, and it will take a Herculean offer for a team to poach his services from the Lakers.

Former Raptors Demar Derozan is also set to become a free agent after surprisingly opting out of the final year of his contract with the San Antonio Spurs. Derozan, who was infamously traded to the Spurs as part of the package in return for Kawhi Leonard, never fully experienced success in coach Gregg Popovich's system. The slashing guard was considered a potential trade chip as the Spurs seem likely to enter a rebuilding phase after trading away big man LaMarcus Aldridge to the Celtics in a draft night deal.

It's not immediately clear what Derozan's market will look like, but with Raptors guard Fred VanVleet also scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason, there are plenty of backcourt options available for teams that are willing to spend the money. Derozan will likely command a larger deal that VanVleet, but both bring two completely different skillsets to the table.

The 2020 NBA Free Agency period will officially open up in the coming days as teams scramble to upgrade their rotations for the 2020-2021 season.

Davis Re-Signs in LA, Derozan Heads To Atlanta

The Los Angeles Lakers have locked up superstar big man Anthony Davis to a five-year super-max extension. After a NBA Finals defeat in his first season with the Lakers, Davis opted out of the remainder of his contract to hit the free agent market. While it was expected all along that Davis would be returning to Los Angeles to play alongside Lebron James, today’s announcement makes it a formality.

Davis’ five-year deal comes with a hefty price tag of $181.82M, a steep price to pay but one that is worth it for Rob Pelinka and Lakers. After acquiring Davis from the New Orleans Pelicans for a impressive package of young players including Brandon Ingram and Lonzo Ball, Davis solidified himself as one of the elite players in the league. With Davis back in the fold, the Lakers look poised to make another deep postseason run as they look to pick up the 17th NBA Championship in Lakers history.

In other news, former Toronto Raptors guard Demar Derozan has signed a massive four-year deal with the Atlanta Hawks. It came as a surprise to most when Derozan opted out of the remainder of his contract with the San Antonio Spurs, but with the Spurs entering a rebuild phase and Derozan reportedly not fitting in with head coach Gregg Popovich, the former NBA All Star decided to move on.

Derozan’s deal is worth a reported $131.64M and will give the Hawks a legitimate offensive threat to pair with young point guard Trae Young. Derozan will give the Hawks a new-look offence will providing a veteran presence in the locker room. Currently, the Hawks have Kevin Huerter slotted in as their starting shooting guard, but that position will clearly be given to Derozan. Huerter’s expected addition to the Hawks’ bench unit will strengthen the offensive potential of the team as they look to make the postseason for the first time since 2017.

            Raptors Bring Back Ibaka, VanVleet

The Toronto Raptors are doing everything they can to retain their championship-winning core, announcing that they have agreed to re-sign big man Serge Ibaka and pivotal guard Fred VanVleet. Both players have played a huge role in the Raptors’ success over the past few seasons, culminating in back-to-back NBA Championships.

Ibaka’s deal is a two-year deal worth $24M, with the second year being a team option. Toronto originally acquired Ibaka from the Orlando Magic several years ago and the energetic big man has been a major piece of the bench unit for Nick Nurse and the Raptors in the past few seasons.

Bringing back VanVleet, who the Raptors originally signed as an undrafted free agent, was viewed by many as a must. The Rockford, Illinois native has developed to become a legitimate scoring threat alongside Kyle Lowry in the Raptors’ backcourt. With Lowry turning 35 soon and entering the last year of his deal, many believe that VanVleet will be the Raptors’ point guard of the future as they look to continue as annual NBA Championship contenders. VanVleet’s deal is worth $85.03M over the next four years.

While bringing both Ibaka and VanVleet back is plenty of reason to celebrate for Raptors fans, the large amount of money spent by Masai Urjiri early on in the offseason likely marks the end of the team’s run with Marc Gasol as the team’s center. Gasol was acquired from the Memphis Grizzlies a year and a half ago and has provided tremendous scoring touch and has been a defensive staple in the paint. Unfortunately, unless a corresponding move is made, the Raptors simply will not have the cap space left to retain the Spanish big man unless he gives them a significant discount. That being said, Serge Ibaka and his new extension will fit nicely into the starting rotation.

The Raptors will likely be on the lookout for a cost-friendly big man on the free agent market as the offseason continues unless Nick Nurse is content with using Chris Boucher with the bench unit.

Raptors Add Baynes, Leonard As NBA Offseason Picks Up

No, the Raptors did not somehow manifest the return of Kawhi Leonard.

Instead, the team announced that it has agree to one year contracts with both Aron Baynes and Meyers Leonard. Baynes, who’s deal is worth a reported $7M, will be asked to compete for a spot on Nick Nurse’s bench unit. With the lack of funds needed to re-sign Spanish big man Marc Gasol, the team quickly pivoted to the free agent market.

Leonard, 28, spent last season with the Miami Heat after spending the first seven years of his career in Portland. A power forward by nature, it is still unclear how Leonard will factor into coach Nick Nurse’s plans. It appears that Leonard, Baynes, and Chris Boucher will have to battle for rotation spots on Toronto’s bench unit. While each big man brings a different skill set, it is safe to say that the two signings have helped the Raptors get tougher in the paint — a trait that they will need now that Joel Embiid isn’t the only big man they have to worry about following the Boston Celtics’ acquisition of LaMarcus Aldridge. Leonard’s deal is worth $1.67M and represents a low-risk acquisition for the Raptors.

The two signings all but ensures that Serge Ibaka will enter the season as the Raptors’ starting center. The beloved Ibaka will reclaim that role on a permanent basis for the first time since the Raptors acquired Marc Gasol from the Memphis Grizzlies prior to the 2019 trade deadline.

The Raptors weren’t the only team that was busy on the free agent market this week, as the Miami Heat have quickly moved the replace Leonard, announcing that they have agreed to a 3 year deal with Christian Wood worth $34.68M. Still only 24, Wood’s skillset and scoring touch instantly provide the Heat with a third offensive threat aside from Jimmy Butler and Tyler Herro, making them an interesting team to keep an eye on heading into the 2020-2021 season.

It proved to be a busy week for big men all across the free agent market, as both Paul Millsap and Hassan Whiteside were able to find long term deals in new homes. Millsap, who has spend the past few season with the Denver Nuggets, agree to a 3 year deal worth $72.58M with the Charlotte Hornets. The move comes at a time where the Hornets have struggled to find success lately and hope that Millsap will provide them with the spark needed to put together a winning season.

Surprisingly, Whiteside will be joining the Detroit Pistons on a massive four year, $111.28M deal. With Christian Wood now out of the picture, it seems like Detroit will be looking to take advantage of the last few years of Blake Griffin. With both Whiteside and Griffin in the front court, the Pistons now look like a physical threat to many of the teams that now play a small-ball style.

                Raptors Sign Stanley, Waive Watson

After being selected with the 47th overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, Cassius Stanley was surprisingly cut loose by the Minnesota Timberwolves. The 6’6” guard out of Duke quickly drew the interest of several teams around the league and has now signed a deal with the Toronto Raptors. With a roster crunch situation and two first round picks in Tyrese Haliburton and Grant Riller, Stanley found himself on the outside looking in and was eventually let go by the club.

Toronto seems like the perfect fit for Stanley, who will be have the veteran mentorship of both Kyle Lowry and Fred VanVleet as he attempts to crack a deep rotation. Currently, the Raptors have 2020 first round pick Leandro Bolmaro and sharpshooter Matt Thomas ahead of Stanley on the depth chart.

In a corresponding move, the Raptors have waived guard Paul Watson. The 25 year old Watson was on track to earn $1.13M this season and has not been able to find a spot in Nick Nurse’s system. With the young Stanley being available and regarded as having more potential, the club made the decision to move on from Watson.

Just a few months after capturing their second consecutive NBA Championship, the Toronto Raptors have announced their opening night roster for the upcoming 2020-2021 NBA season.

While Masai Ujiri was able to retain the core of their championship roster, bringing back both Serge Ibaka and Fred VanVleet, there are some sweeping changes outside of the starting five. Gone are the likes of fan favourites Marc Gasol and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson and in are the fresh faces of Aron Baynes and Meyers Leonard.

The Raptors were able to add plenty of skill to their roster through the draft, picking up both Leandro Bolmaro and Jordan Nwora, while signing young guard Cassius Stanley. Clearly, the Raptors brass decided that they needed to add some size and muscle in the paint. With the conference rival Boston Celtics adding LaMarcus Aldridge and the Lakers still possessing the dangerous duo of Lebron James and Anthony Davis, the Raptors made the move to add Baynes and Leonard. Baynes, a center by nature, and Leonard both provide the Raptors with a veteran presence off the bench and gives head coach Nick Nurse more flexibility on the roster to match bigger teams.

The Raptors kick off their season on the road against the Boston Celtics as they look to go for their third straight NBA Championship. It will be interesting to see how the new players are able to adjust to the Raptors' defensive focused culture and team mentality.

Raptors Kick Off New Season With Victory Over Celtics

The Toronto Raptors showed the world why they are back-to-back NBA Champions by kicking off the 2020-2021 season with a resounding victory over Eastern Conference rival Boston Celtics.

Kyle Lowry continued to prove his doubters wrong with 39 points and nine assists in the victory. Lowry and Celtics point guard Kemba Walker went head-to-head on the stat sheet, with Walker finishing with an impressive 42 points.

The scoring outburst from Walker wasn't enough for the Celtics, who got minimal contributions from both Jayson Tatum and Jalen Brown. The young duo combined for a mere 13 points in the loss.

Tonight's game marked the Raptors debut for several new faces in Nick Nurse's rotation. Aron Baynes and Meyers Leonard both made their debuts after signing with Toronto during the offseason while 2020 first round draft pick Leandro Bolmaro also made his NBA debut late in the first quarter.

The Toronto Raptors will look to start the new season with two straight wins when they face the New York Knicks at home. The game will mark the home opener for the Raptors, who will be presented their 2020 NBA Championship rings.

Raptors Defeat Knicks On Ring Ceremony Night

The Toronto Raptors took down the New York Knick 115-96 after receiving their 2020 NBA Championship rings. Prior to the game, NBA commissioner Adam Silver presented members of the 2020 championship-winning team with rings to commemorate their success. For the second year in a row, the Toronto crowd was able to watch a banner get lifted to the rafters of Scotiabank Arena.

Once the game started, it was all business for the Raptors. Pascal Siakam led the way with an insanely efficiently shooting performance before fouling-out of the game late in the third quarter. Siakam shot an impressive 10-for-11 from the field, including 2-for-2 from beyond the arc. The former Most Improved Player finished with 29 points in 28 minutes, leading all players on the scoresheet.

New York Knicks guard and 2020 first overall pick Anthony Edwards impressed in his second career NBA game. After scoring 15 points in his NBA debut, the former Georgia guard followed up with a 23 point performance against the Raptors. Unfortunately for the Knicks, their veteran guards couldn't keep up with the youngster. Jeff Teague and Dennis Smith Jr. combined to shoot a horrid 2-for-18 from the field, scoring only four points in the loss. With next to no offence from the bench, New York was handed their first loss of the season.

Toronto improves to 2-0 on the young season, as young players like OG Anunoby and Matt Thomas continue to show their development. Anunoby picked up 15 points in just under 30 minutes of action, while the sharpshooting Thomas added another 13 points off the bench.

The Raptors will look to maintain their perfect record tomorrow night as they take on the Philadelphia 76ers on the road. Philadelphia has struggled in the first two games of the season, and will be entering the game still seeking their first win of the season.

New York Knicks (1-1) at Toronto Raptors (2-0)

Raptors rolling early... Some nice solid offseason additions. Surely the Raps can't go for three in a row...? Good Luck!

Added some size in the offseason and it is showing early on in the rebounding numbers. Three-peat would be impressive, but might be difficult with this roster. Definitely feeling the absence of Gasol through the first two games.
