Gary Payton nearly pulled it off -- the dude was going HAM all game and got no help from anyone else. He's going to be a trade deadline candidate for the right team IF someone can make a good enough offer.

Not really, lol. That's a funky 2K glitch -- for some reason, for the home team, it will place the number of points in the assists column for the home team halftime player. Not sure why, but it was introduced in one of the more recent patches and hasn't been dealt with yet. Don't know if they ever will, it's annoying but it's never accurate in most cases.

The Low Block: League Update, Holiday Edition
                By Erin Kendricks

                Injuries:

Injuries are like fruitcakes — no one wants them, yet everyone gets them, and this year is no different as many teams received the gift that no one wants. The Lakers, despite losing Robert Horry for basically the whole season, are still mostly unstoppable thanks to the Shaq/Kobe pairing (or is it Kobe/Shaq now? Next summer will be very interesting for them.)

                Standings:

At the top of the West, to no one’s surprise, are the uber-dominant Lakers. Like Tom Hanks, they can’t seem to do any wrong (really, can Hanks make a bad movie anymore?) and the rest of the league is playing catch-up … except for the Lakers hated rival, the Kings. The defending champions (yes, that still is a weird phrase to say about Sacramento) are still impressive, still demolishing teams with Chris Webber putting up a cool 22 points and 9 boards. The Nuggets are a distant third, having been pasted by both veteran squads (Denver looked like a newborn trying to outrun teenagers, it just wasn’t fair in those games), while the Mavericks, Suns (surprisingly spunky), and Rockets bring up the rest of the top 6.

Struggling to remain in the playoff race are the Spurs (no David Robinson means free layups!), the Grizzlies (Memphis could be getting a playoff series in year one), the Clippers (Eddie Jones is secretly buying alcohol for the younger Clippers’ players to encourage this better play, right?), and the T’Wolves (Kevin Garnett remains trapped in Minnesota, much to the chagrin of any real basketball fan).

The Blazers and Jazz look their age, as both veteran squads are STRUGGLING (that’s in all caps for emphasis and so the old players on those teams can read the words, eyesight is the first thing to go) to keep up with the younger squads in the West. But, hey, at least they aren’t the Sonics (who seem to have vastly miscalculated the worth of McDyess), the Warriors (who seem to have correctly calculated how bad they’d be this year), and the Pelicans (who are an expansion team in year two and probably shouldn’t be taken seriously till 2006).

At the top of the East are the … Bucks? Why, yes, it is the Milwaukee Bucks, leading the pack in the East as the three-headed monster of Glenn Robinson, Ray Allen, and Sam Cassell are killing the competition. Tied with them are the Hornets, defending conference champs who are still getting amazing play from Jamal Mashburn (dude is putting up 21 and 8, on 60% shooting from the field) and Baron Davis. The Pistons and Jerry Stackhouse — a player many thought might be on the move if he underperformed this season — are in a close third, as Stackhouse is leading the league in scoring with 30.1 PPG. The Celtics, Nets, and Wizards round out the top 6 — Washington misses Juwan Howard for the first time ever as Jordan tries to get the Wizards back into a win streak.

Fighting for a playoff spot are the 76ers, Magic, and Pacers — two spots, three teams, and each has serious flaws. The 76ers don’t have a reliable scorer outside of AI (Battier is decent but taking time to shoot efficiently), the Magic can score but are wildly inconsistent (McGrady/Hill/Camby have only managed to play in a third of games together this year as minor injuries keep taking one of them out of the lineup), and the Pacers are teetering on the edge of falling off hard if Reggie Miller can’t find his shooting stroke again (it seems to have abandoned him — perhaps Spike Lee has seen it?).

The bottom of the East contains familiar faces — the Cavs (surprisingly competitive and a maybe playoff team if others ahead of them falter), the Knicks (continuing to disappoint here in the 2000s), the Hawks (Jason Terry and Joe Johnson aren’t working and someone’s going before the deadline … probably Terry), the Raptors (Vince Carter wants to ask for a trade, but isn’t sure what “General Manager’s Office” is in Canadian and thusly is lost somewhere in the complex), the Bulls (Jerry Reinsdorf’s bank account is fine; the team, not so much), and this year’s tankathon winner in the East, the Miami Heat (Pat Riley basically sleeps through games now).

They are legit good in this league, man, constantly near the top of the standings. Baron Davis and Mashburn, healthy, are incredibly deadly as a duo.

                        Ch. 7

You should just tell him.” Kari Kendricks, Erin’s sister, stood in the kitchen of her LA apartment (which had a great view despite being in a rather not-great part of LA), and stirred the chili on the stove with a well-practiced hand. “You clearly have feelings, he’s got feelings, so two should just get on with it,” she said with a laugh.

Erin, sitting at the dining room table, tapped her fingers against the table deep in thought. “We’re not officially dating.”

You’re not officially not dating,” Kari countered. She added a few more spices into the chili, put the top back on, and leaned against the kitchen counter. “Are you telling me you’d rather just stay like this? In this limbo?”

Erin frowned. “No. There’s … I don’t know, history, something, just in the way. I feel like if we go down that road again, we’ll just end up hurting one another.”

Kari sighed, grabbed two wine glasses from the cupboard, and came over to table. “You need a drink.” She didn’t take no for an answer as she grabbed a bottle from the wine rack and popped it up with ease.

Erin watched the glass fill a little with a deep red concoction — her favorite type of wine — and took a deep breath. Between the scents from the chili and the wine, it was shaping up to be quite a meal for her first day of vacation. “Thanks.”

Kari gave herself a bit more in her glass — she was better at holding onto her liquor, partially due to experience and partially due to being a larger woman, though only by about thirty pounds or so — and took a seat next to Erin. “You’re overthinking this.”

I am,” she confirmed. This vacation was just as much about seeing her sister and her baby niece — napping at the moment — as it was about straightening out her own feelings. “I think there’s something there. But there was something there before and what did that do for us? He left for Europe, I stayed here, we both went our separate ways.”

Kari took a sip of her wine and shook her head. “It happened. Maybe it was meant to happen that way, who knows? But sitting here and letting a chance at happiness pass again … you’ll hate yourself if you. You two worked before, you work now, so why not see if you can go all the way?”

Erin frowned and took a deep sip of her glass. “You already have a husband and a kid. It’s easier for you to say that.”

True,” Kari confirmed. “But Rob and I had to work harder at it than you and Jim ever did … you two are a more natural fit.”

You really think so? Honestly?” Erin shot her older sister a pleading look. “Honest to God, you think we work that well?”

Kari reached out and gave Erin’s hand a firm squeeze. “You both love basketball. You both love each other. You both can talk for hours into the night without any effort. If you want a recipe for happiness, that’s not a bad start.” Her nose flared. “Speaking of, I think I need to turn down the heat on that.” She got up and went for the kitchen.

Erin finished her glass of wine in one, deep gulp, and poured herself another. She was going to need to get really wasted tonight.

Oh yes, Jordan! Well, he's doing well. He's got 22.5 PPG, with 6.0 RPG, 6.3 APG, and 1.8 SPG -- all on 52% shooting, 36% from deep. The Wizards are just a game above .500 at this point in January, and in the seventh seed right now, so not putting the fear of god in teams, but they're about where you'd expect.

I think they'll make the playoffs, but they really are going to need an all-time MJ postseason run to get past Round 1.

                              Ch. 8

His old Jeep cruised down the road at a leisurely pace, his mind working as his body was on virtual autopilot — it was late, nearly 2AM, but they had gotten back finally from Toronto, where the weather was less pleasant in late January than Denver. It had been a long flight … they had spent the last week on the road, playing the T’Wolves, Bulls, and Raptors. They had gone 2-1 in that stretch, but had suffered an inconceivable loss to the Raptors — barely a .500 team at this point and sliding back — and Jim had watched, in amazement, as Vince Carter tore them a new one.

It’s why he’s called Vincesanity,” he told himself as he cruised through the quiet night. Carter had killed them, 36-8-8 on 14-18 from the field, murdering any defense that Jim threw at him. The player was an incredible talent and if he ever got a team around him, if Toronto ever managed to get a squad of players that could help him, he’d be amazing.

More amazing,” he corrected himself as he pulled into the road his house was on. Part of him wanted to go to Jerome and ask for a trade, for some defense on the wing — Anderson was too slight to guard Carter, Parker wasn’t ready for that kind of assignment, Posey was too slow … they weren’t prepared to deal with that type of player. If Carter did that to them, what would Kobe do?

He shuddered at the thought as he pulled into his driveway and saw, with surprise, Erin’s sedan parked there. Instantly, his head went from basketball to her, and his heart skipped a beat.

What the hell was she doing here this late? He parked his car next to hers, careful not to block her in, and got out from his Jeep slowly. He reached out and touched her car, confirming he wasn’t seeing things, and tossed a glance at his house — the lights were on.

She knew where he hid the extra key, he had told her, but normally she’d only come over for dinner if the game had ended at a reasonable time; this was an away game that had gone late.

Jim didn’t even bother grabbing his suitcase from the car, he just made his way inside. His hallway lights were on but dimmed, and he saw a flickering light coming from the living room. He closed the door behind him, careful to lock it, and peaked his head in.

His eyes were drawn to the flickering light — a candle set atop his card table, his only table in the place — and they quickly made their way to Erin sitting in his recliner. His blood pressure rose upon seeing what she was in.

She was covered in his bathrobe and wore a mischievous smile on her face. “I’m tired of just dinner … I was wondering if you were interested in going a bit further.”

Good God.“I wasn’t sure you’d want that,” he admitted quietly, forcing his legs to move — it was hard to concentrate on that when she was just right there but he wasn’t going to assume. He desperately wanted to, but wasn’t going to.

I know. But we’ve both been circling around each other for months … and I think it’s time we decide to do something about it. And I want to try again.” Her voice got softer. “You?”

Yes,” he said as he crossed the room in just a short stride, made his way to her, and pulled her in for a deep kiss.

He canceled all team activities the next day. His players needed rest and so did he … and she.
