Yeah, we're pushing for a top-2 seed, but MAN the West is tough. I strongly suspect we're getting the 3rd or 4th seed at the rate we're going, just not quite enough experience for this roster.

Payton to Detroit made a lot of sense on many levels, we'll see if the Glove can bring a title to Motown with Stackhouse and Ben Wallace.

In his career, Stackhouse was often traded away from teams who would make/win the finals: 76ers, Pistons (and to a lesser extent Heat and Mavs). Would be great for him to get a title!

We'll see if he and the Glove can get a title -- the East is easier to get through than the West, but getting past Charlotte will be hard. The Hornets don't mess around, lol.

The Low Block: Regular Season Finale
          By Erin Kendricks

          Award Winners:

          Injuries:

The Lakers got back Horry, but lost Shaq in the last week of the season to another ankle sprain — the big man’s second late in the season in as many years — and Kobe carried the Lakers the rest of the way. The torch hasn’t been passed, Kobe’s grabbed it out of Shaq’s clammy hands, and LA will go as far as Kobe goes. The Mavs lost Steve Nash back in late March and limped their way into the playoffs behind Damon Jones and Dirk — Dallas isn’t where they wanted to be.

          Standings:

          The Non-Playoff Teams:

The final week of the NBA season saw the playoff teams fighting for positioning — games on the last day of the year meant something for many (LAL, DEN), but especially for the Blazers, who nearly snuck in the playoffs. All they needed was a Dallas loss and a win from them to be in, but the Mavs pulled out the W and Portland is left with an aging, ancient roster (they’ll have time to make all those lovely AARP weekly breakfasts now). The T’Wolves and Sonics also nearly snuck in, but Minnesota was the big disappointment — after sniffing the playoffs for a few days in February, they fell back to Earth hard as the basketball gods remembered that Minnesota can’t have nice things (injuries to Wally Szczerbiak crippled their offense). The Jazz, Clippers, Warriors, and Pelicans were DOA — rumors out of Utah is that Stockton is done, retiring, and Malone may join him or ask for a trade out of Utah for one last shot at a ring.

In the East, the final week of the regular season saw inglorious ends to the year for the 76ers and Raptors, who needed to win every remaining game they had in the last week of the season to have a chance at getting in — instead, they lost and the runs of AI and Vince in their respective cities are likely done as both stars, teams, fans, and front offices are tired of each other (and, really, can you blame them?). The Cavs nearly made the playoffs (which is a sentence no one would have believed at the beginning of the year — “Cavs fight each other on court” was a more believable sentence back in October). The Knicks were bad, finishing 8 games worse than last year (what a great front office they have!), the Hawks and Bulls were bad, and the Heat were really bad — Pat Riley is crossing all his digits that they end up with the top pick.

          The Playoff Teams:

The 2002 playoffs are stacked with interesting matchups. Out West, the battered Lakers take on the battered Mavs in a battle of “Which team has the better star?” between Kobe and Dirk. I expect Kobe to drop 50 in two games and the Lakers to win in 5. The Suns and Grizzlies go at it, both relatively healthy, and Phoenix is hoping their addition of Foyle at the deadline can get them through a tough matchup here — Bibby vs. Kidd is the primetime event. The Nuggets get to face the Rockets, in a matchup of new versus what’s left of the old; does Hakeem have one more playoff run in him to upset the better (but far less experienced) Nuggets? Finally, it’s a worthy undercard in the Kings vs. Spurs — Sacramento draws a tough matchup as San Antonio has Tim Duncan and David Robinson to lock up the paint, which will make Webber’s life hard; Peja has to hit his shots or the Kings will not be defending any titles (but will definitely be defending Chris Webber’s play no matter what).

In the East, the Bucks look brilliant for that Mourning trade and should cakewalk over the Nets (spunky but they have no one who can stop Mourning). The Magic and Hornets duel in a Southeast Division tussle — can Orlando stop Jamal Mashburn, who’s having another great (but quiet) year putting up 20-7-5 on splits of 55-50-88 (scorching hot). The Pistons and Pacers square off in matchup that will determine if that Gary Payton trade was really worth it — Payton’s performed well since arriving, but the tough work hasn’t started yet. Finally, the Celtics get a chance to send MJ home in a matchup of new (Paul Pierce) vs old (Jordan and Ewing on one last run); if Boston gets upset, someone’s getting fired.

(Random number generator has assigned me Games 3 and 7. Let’s see what the Rockets do.)

The Low Block: The Playoffs, Round 2
                  By Erin Kendricks

                  The Bracket:

                  Injuries:

                  Round 1 Recap:

The West witnessed a big upset in round 1 as the Mavericks upset the Lakers in six. It was a HUGE disappointment to the league office and Vegas (both whom were betting on LA getting back to the Finals), but the Lakers were undone by Kobe shooting the team out (and in and out and in) of the series. Game 5, in particular, showcased the highs and lows as Bryant went 14-30 from the field, keeping the Lakers in it, but a surprise return by Steve Nash (gingerly getting around the floor) gave the Mavs the edge. Shaq was able to go in Game 6, giving the Lakers 30 big points, but the Mavs hit him with the Hack-a-Shaq and he missed 8 free throws (OOF), and the Lakers lost by 5. LA goes home way earlier than anyone expected.

The Suns got smoked by the Grizzles, who showed they aren’t fooling around — Okur destroyed Phoenix from deep (shooting an insane 29 triples in the first two games and hitting on 17 of them!), Jason Kidd was roundly outplayed by Mike Bibby (he’s earning a big deal from someone this summer), and Phoenix could only manage to win a game; this iteration of the Suns may be over.

The Nuggets took care of the Rockets easily — Houston tried starting Hakeem in the first two games and were stomped. They then benched him in the third game and were stomped worse; they were DOA. The Kings easily took care of the Spurs, who simply couldn’t shut down that high powered attack — David Robinson looked as slow as Hakeem.

In the East, the Bucks also fell to their opponent, the Nets. Milwaukee was up 2-0, then proceeded to lose the next four straight (FOUR!) as New Jersey pulled off a huge upset; the Bucks have to ask themselves what went wrong and the answer points to Ray Allen, who was shut down by Kerry Kittles all series — his disappearing act neutered the Bucks offense at the worst times.

The Magic got swept by the Hornets in a series that looked better on paper — Orlando didn’t get much from Darrell Armstrong and Camby was less than effective; Jamal Mashburn ate Grant Hill’s lunch, dinner, and breakfast. The Pistons and Pacers engaged in an entertaining series, as Gary Payton did what he was brought in to do and slowed down the Pacers guards. Reggie Miller got injured in Game 5 and that ended any of Indy’s hopes of an upset. Boston cleaned the clock of Michael Jordan, who is publicly committed to staying with the Wizards, but privately is reported to be fuming at the lack of playoff success.

                  Round 2 Preview:

Out West, it’s the Mavs versus the Grizz. Neither team was expected to make it this far (Dallas especially) and it’ll be difficult to pick a winner here; Dallas is the more veteran squad but they’ve been beat up all year. Memphis is younger but sure looks like they know what they’re doing — Mike Bibby made Jason Kidd look bad last round, will he do the same to Nash this round?

In the second series, Denver’s path to a title meets its biggest obstacle — the Kings. Sacramento has won 3 of 4 games this year against Denver, and not by close margins, and the Nuggets know to get a title they’ll have to go through the champs. Can Denver really beat a defending champion Kings? We’ll see how far rookies Gasol and Parker have really come.

In the East, the Hornets and Nets square off. New Jersey is playing with house money and knows they really shouldn’t be here, and Charlotte expected to get here (and they proved they’re pretty damn good too). The Nets don’t have any real advantages on paper over Charlotte, but they didn’t against the Bucks either.

In the East’s other series, the NBA sees a renewal of an old-school rivalry — it’s Detroit versus Boston, in a second round matchup good enough for a conference finals. The Pistons went all in on this year and next with the trade for Gary Payton, Boston is riding the high of Paul Pierce’s great play. If Stackhouse can continue throwing up 32 PPG nights, this series tilts Detroit’s way.

(The random number generator has assigned me Games 4 and 5 of the series. Sacramento has been awful to me all year … I am not hopeful.)

WOW! Both 1 seeds lost? That's totally unexpected, especially given how good they were in the regular season. The league MVP also lost in round 1...these playoffs are completely wide open and everyone except for Boston and Detroit has a franchise history of futility. Very likely we see first time NBA champions.

It gets quite interesting -- I'm actually WAYYYYY past the playoffs, like I'm in the 2004-05 season at this point and WOW, has the league taken some unexpected turns (as has this story).

Well, a global pandemic leaves me with a lot of time on my hands now so ... NBA 2K.

In a cruel twist of fate, though, I made a bad mistake and deleted the file that was actually four years ahead -- I had so many backup MyLeagues that I decided to clean them up and sent that file to the dustbin of history.

Serves me right for being ambitious. So all I have left is my backup file from the end of the first season, plus a bunch of written content that happened in a file that no longer exists.

                            UGH.

I could attempt to re-engineer the whole damn thing (difficult but not impossible) but it'd be hellishly tedious. So this looks like a one season run.

BUT, that does mean I get to go with a different idea -- now that the NBA is done (very likely) for the year, I wanted to take the league in a brand new direction while still scratching my itch for retro players.

So I'm going to start up a new file (and not get so far ahead that I make a bunch of backups, lose track, delete the wrong one, and end up having to start over again ... ) and start a new MyLeague with the 1979 draft class (with the addition of Larry Bird since he didn't start playing until 1979 and I have no one else I care about in the 1978 class).

I'm going to break retro legends forward in time, starting with the 1979 class and working my way up -- a slow bleed in of past stars with current guys, for a well-mixed league.
