CHARLOTTE -- If you're a fan of 90s basketball icons the Hornets are going to have them this season. Earlier today, the team announced that former Houston Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy will be the franchises second ever head coach. Tagging along with Van Gundy will be his former all NBA big man and assistant coach Patrick Ewing. Ewing, will be the head assistant coach in Charlotte. Van Gundy lasted coached the Rockets, however, he was let go following the conclusion of last season due to the team's failure to go far in the playoffs.
Jordan reportedly pursued Van Gundy hard, looking to bring in experience and toughness to the young team. Van Gundy mulled offers from other teams along with a broadcasting job at ESPN before deciding to sign with the Bobcats. This hiring marks the first major splash of the Michael Jordan era in Charlotte. Last Summer Jordan bought a minority stake in the team as apart of that deal Jordan took over control of all basketball operations.
Following the conclusion of last season, Jordan fired inaugural Bobcats coach and GM Bernie Bickerstaff. Bickerstaff went 77-164 in the team's first three seasons. Bickerstaff reportedly struggled to manage the dual roles as both GM and Head Coach. The team brought in Rod Higgins to run the team alongside Michael Jordan.
Van Gundy will have several interesting prospects awaiting him Charlotte. Raymond Felton the team's second-year point guard is coming off a 14ppg season as he took major strides forward. Last year's number three pick Adam Morisson had an up and down rookie season, however, he showed flashes of greatness with a 35pt game at the end of the season. Emeka Okafor and Gerald Wallace are two prototypical Van Gundy defensive-oriented players. Wallace led the team last year with 18ppg alongside, tough defense. Okafor will benefit the most from the presence of Patrick Ewing. After a spectacular first season where he won rookie of the year, Okafor has struggled to make any improvements to his game lacking any sort of consistent offensive game.
