NEW HAVEN -- The Yale Bulldogs came in after losing their last three games. On paper Yale is a talented team and is expected to compete for the Ivy league crown however. The Aggies had just won their last two games, marking the first time the team had ever won back to back games under Coach Reid.
Straight out the gate, the Aggies were on fire, Vince Oliver hit back-to-back threes. Then after forcing a turnover Todd Lownethaal found Dedrick Watson down low for an easy bucket. Quickly UC Davis found themselves up 15-2 early in the first half. However, the team got sloppy and Yale was about to break out a run of their own led by Senior Travis Pinick's relentless attack of the basket.
With things tied up, Coach Reid called a timeout and went to his bench. UC Davis's bench was able to build the lead back to double digits again. Led by the hot shooting of several players. However, once again Yale crawled their way back into the game. Dedrick Watson had several bad turnovers which Alex Zampier was able to turn into fast-break points for Yale.
This time the Bulldogs weren't content to relinquish the lead back to the Aggies as Yale got on a run of their own. Getting a seven-point lead with two minutes left. A last-second three by Nate Clark was able to knock the Bulldogs lead down to four at halftime.
Coming out of the half, Yale got on a run Chris Andrews the Junior point guard led the way both through his attack of the basket and excellent passing. Andrews finished with eight assists in this game. Yale got the lead to a comfortable ten points.
UC Davis turned to the player they have so many times the past two seasons to get out of a tough spot, Vince Oliver. Oliver cut up the Bulldogs defense hitting shots from all over the floor. He was particularly lethal from deep only missing one three-pointer. Slowly the Aggies began to chop away at the Bulldogs lead. With four minutes left UC Davis had a chance to take the lead when Jimmie Harris missed a layup, the Aggies were able to steal the ball and find Harris open for a layup on the very next possession but again he missed it.
As the game winded down things went back and forth, Jesse Lopez-Low was crucial in grabbing several key rebounds away from Yale's big men. As the game winded down to it's final forty-five seconds things were tied up. However, Zampier shook off Jimmie Harris and got wide open for a three to put Yale up three.
Coming out of a timeout everyone knew who UC Davis was going to, Vince Oliver already had 26 points. UC Davis drew up an isolation for Oliver who drove past Zampier to hit a layup to put UC Davis only down one, With seventeen seconds left UC Davis had to either steal the inbounds pass or foul one of Yale's players to send them to the line. They chose the latter, Todd Lownethaal tipped the inbounds pass it bounced to Jesse Lopez-Low who only had the basket in front of him. Lopez-Low sprinted towards the basket slamming it down with eleven seconds left. The Aggies were able to lockdown Yale on the ensuing forcing a miss and giving UC Davis it's a third straight win.
