    Team Stats:Team Comparison
    Titans win at the Buzzer
    January 17th, 2009

DAVIS -- Saturday night UC Davis took on CS Fullerton. Fullterton is currently undefeated in the Big West at 5-0 after a win over Pacific on Thursday. UC Davis started the conference season slow with two straight losses but has since rebounded with two straight wins.

UC Davis got out to a hot start getting to a six-point lead after several quick buckets from Watson and Oliver. Titan's returned on offense launching an eight-point run of their own led by Senior point guard Josh Akognon. The Titan's began to force UC Davis to commit sloppy turnovers trying to rush their offense.

The turnovers weren't complained to one player outside of Jesse Lopez-Low the entire UC Davis starting lineup had multiple turnovers. CS Fullerton also guarded the three-point line very well. Only allowing UC Davis to shoot nine three-pointers in the game which they only hit two. CS Fullerton began to pull away late in the first half at one point getting up eleven.

    UC Davis Stats:

    CS Fullerton Stats:

After halftime UC Davis came out with the goal of forcing more turnovers as CS Fullerton had only a single turnover in the first half. Their increased pressure worked early as they forced two steals in the half-court trap. Jimmie Harris slammed it down on the other end. Harris more than likely had his best game in a UC Davis uniform tonight. He scored 17 points on great efficiency. He led the Aggies comeback through his drives to the basket.

On the other end, another freshman was having a great night, Preston Keeler led the Titan's offense in the second half. Keeler and Harris were rated two of the top freshman in the conference entering the season. Keeler hit shots from all over the floor.

As the game winded down things were neck and neck. Jesse Lopez-Low who finished with fifteen rebounds picked up several key ones down the stretch. With fifty seconds left Todd Lowenthal hit the go-ahead bucket to put the Aggies up two. The next trip down the floor the Titan's missed a contested shot and Harris rebounded with forty seconds remaining. CS Fullerton decided to not foul. UC Davis had Dedrick Watson take the possible game-sealing shot, he missed a turnaround in the post. The Titans rebounded calling a timeout. With six seconds left they took the ball up the floor passing it to Keeler who was open from nearly half-court. He shot the deep three and as the ball went through the hoop time expired. CS Fullerton players ran onto the court dogpiling ontop of Keeler.

Oh man, that's a rough one to lose. Your team is gonna remember that one and will want revenge next time you meet.

Tough way to lose, especially with a solid comeback against a league unbeaten. Tuck that one away for later, and get your payback on the return trip.

Yeah, it wasn't a fun one to lose, especially when I thought I had won the game when I had the ball up two with forty seconds to go. The start of conference play has been tough and the Aggies still have a lot of room to grow. Hopefully, when we see them later down the line we're ready. We just need to run our offense and stay away from the turnovers. I got baited into playing a style of offense that doesn't work well for me team too many times.

            2008-09 UC Davis Basketball Recruiting
Leroy Youmans Verbally Commits to UC Davis

Parks Takes Final Visit to UC Davis
Donnie Parks 6'6 - Power Forward - Los Angeles, CA - 3 Star

This week top 125 ranked recruit Donnie Parks took his final official visit to UC Davis per the NCAA's rules. Parks was disappointed that the Aggies lost a close game to Cal State Fullerton but told reporters at 247 he had a great time.

Parks is getting looks from Cal State Bakersfield and UCLA but it's believed the two schools have reduced contact with Parks.

            Signing Probability: Very Likely

UC Davis Losing Ground with Niemer Jefferson
Niemer Jefferson 6'3 - Shooting Guard - Los Angeles, CA - 3 Star

It was originally believed that the Aggies were neck and neck with Pepperdine to sign Niemer Jefferson. However, in recent weeks there's been some murmurings that Jefferson is starting to lean towards Pepperdine. UC Davis is still pushing for the young guard and would like to change his mind before signing day.

He also has offers from San Diego and BYU.

            Signing Probability: Unlikely

Leroy Youmans Verbally Commits to UC Davis
            Leroy Youmans 6'10 - Center - Berkley, CA - 2 Star

Today on myspace, Berkley California center Leroy Youmans announce he would be heading to UC Davis. Youmans has really only been interested in UC Davis from the start of his recruiting process but didn't sign during the in-season window.

Youmans only offer currently is from UC Davis.

            No Indication from Esterkamp
            Cheikh Esterkamp 6'3 - Shooting guard - Kent, WA - 3 Star

The Aggies offered Junior College two-guard Cheikh Esterkamp earlier in the year. Since then little has been heard about Esterkamp's recruiting process. It's unknown how close or not UC Davis is with him.

Esterkamp has offers from Eastern Washington and Sacramento State.

            Signing Probability: Unknown

            UC Davis Offers New Guard
Sylvester Smalls 6'3 - Shooting Guard - Los Angeles, CA - 3 Star

With Niemer Jefferson looking like less of a likely thing the Aggies have opened up their recruiting search again and stumbled on Sylvester Smalls. The combo guard has offers from many top programs on the West Coast but hasn't reportedly made much progress with any of them. The Aggies of course are looking for the replacement to Vince Oliver at shooting guard next season. Smalls can jump out of the gym and can shoot it.

            Signing Probability: Unknown

            Other Scholarship Offers:
Sheldon Neale 6'5 - Shooting guard - San Jose, CA 2 Star
Loren Felder 6'2 - Point Guard - Redding, CA 2 Star

Nothing is official yet, I still think we got a slim shot with Niemer Jefferson. Parks has been barely progressing the past few weeks after having UC Davis shoot up his board early. We currently have a big lead on any other team with him but it's definitely not a done deal yet and I'll have to worry about another team swooping in.

                  Cal Poly Embarrass UC Davis
                  January 22nd, 2009

SAN LUIS -- After a last second loss to CS Fullerton the Aggies were looking to bounce back against Cal Poly. The Mustangs have a young roster which is led by their Senior point guard Trae Clark. They've struggled to close out games this season and have lost many close games down the stretch.

Right off the bat, the Mustangs caught UC Davis by surprise, their fast-paced offense was hitting shots at will from all three levels. Trace Karangwa the freshman forward had the hot hand early knocking down two threes in the first few minutes. On the other side, UC Davis tried to counter with threes of their own, however, Vince Oliver missed several open threes.

The Mustangs got UC Davis point guard Todd Lowenthal into foul trouble early. Forcing Aggie's coach Keon Reid into some unique lineups with Vince Oliver often playing the point. Joe Harden provided a spark off the bench early in the half but his shot started to fade as well. Things for Cal Poly continued to get better as they dominated the glass. Outrebounding UC Davis 41 to 29. They also forced turnovers leading to easy baskets.

Senior Trae Clark had one of his best games in a Mustang's uniform. Scoring at will even when UC Davis had a hand right in his face. When he passed the ball he found his teammates open Corien Luna and Shawn Lewis found themselves getting easy looks all day from Clark's passing.

                  UC Davis Stats:

                  Cal Poly Stats:

One bright spot in the game for the Aggies was their freshman, Dedrick Watson hit some tough shots in the post while Jimmie Harris had another efficient scoring game. However, the rest of the Aggies struggled on offense. Vince Oliver the conference's leading scorer was held to six points and 2-9 shooting. Nate Clark missed several shots he'd typically hit with ease.

Cal Poly cranked up their defense in the second half whilst not relenting on the offensive end. At the seven-minute mark, Keon Reid pulled his starters frustrated by their sloppy play. The bench for the Aggies didn't do much better but Mark Payne, Adam Malik, and Shane Hanson who typically don't see the court all scored.

Man, the conference play has been tough so far for UC Davis. Trae Clark had a game for the Mustangs.

It has but I was expecting it somewhat, we are still towards the bottom of the conference in talent once you get past our top four guys. I've never really paid attention to the Big West in past legacies because I'm almost always playing a team in the Southeast but the Big West is pretty talented right now for being a small conference. The only team below 70 overall is UC Riverside and the rest of the conference is basically in the mid-70s with one team rated an 80 overall and one a 79 overall. I don't know if that will keep up long term or not. However, we still have enough talent to be able to beat anyone in the league on any given night we just can also lose to anyone.

Yeah, I actually going into the game thought it would be a blowout in our favor. I thought we had favorable matchups in the post with Dedrick Watson over their center. Looking at the box score we did and he had a solid game but I feel like it could've been much better. They did a good job of not allowing Watson to get the ball in a favorable position.

UC Davis Falls Apart in the Second Half
                              Febuary 5th, 2009

Davis -- Cal State Northridge and UC Davis are at two different ends of the spectrum. The Aggies started their season off hot with a great non-conference performance but have slipped since they entered conference play. The Cal State Northridge Matadors started off poorly but since entering conference play they have been on a hot streak winning four straight.

The game started slowly both sides were missing shots for the first two minutes. Eventually, once the lid broke, the shots started rolling in. Vince Oliver and Dedrick Watson per usual led the Aggies early. Senior guards Josh Jenkins and Deon Tresvant led the way for the Matadors. Deon Tresvant in particular shot 4/4 from three in the half.

UC Davis built a six-point lead at one point however, sloppy play allowed CS Northridge to catch right back up. Jermaine Smith was huge for the Matadors, grabbing offensive rebounds over the Aggie's bigs. Both Jesse Lopez-Low and Dedrick Watson struggled with boxing out. Vince Oliver struggles from deep continued however, he was able to get inside.

                              UC Davis:

                              CS Northridge:

In the second half, things continued to go back and forth with the lead switching constantly. Due to poor timeout management by Head Coach Keon Reid, UC Davis only had two timeouts in the second half. Dedrick Watson was dominant in the post, he was able to find good one on one matchups coming out CS Northridge's press. On the other side, Josh Jenkins and Deon Tresvant continued to tear it up. Jenkins in particularly hit seemingly countless tough mid-range shots.

With three minutes left in the second half, UC Davis was up two. However, Deon Tresvant hit a three to take the lead. On the ensuing possession for UC Davis Jimmie Harris threw the inbounds pass right out of bounds completely missing Todd Lowenthal. With the ball back for the Matadors, Jermaine Smith grabbed a missed shot and dunked it down. Things continued to fall apart for UC Davis as Dedrick Watson threw an errant pass which turned into a fastbreak layup. A few more turnovers later and UC Davis found themselves down double digits as the game expired.
