Re: Thunder Up! Rebuild in OKC [NBA 2k22]

After the excitement of the draft lottery we have finally found ourselves to the night that everyone has been waiting for: Draft Night! The 2022 NBA Draft is finally upon us and and the headlines and talk shows have been discussing one thing since the lottery results were revealed. The main discussion revolves around the Oklahoma City Thunder and who they will select with the first overall pick.

This draft has been discussed as having two prized prospects to be built around. There is Chet Holmgren, the 19-year old 7’1” unicorn that can seemingly do everything incredibly well on the floor including being an elite shot blocker and playmaker with the ball in his hands. Then there is Paolo Banchero, the versatile scoring forward out of Duke that at 6’10” could play any of the three front court positions and create serious mismatches.

It’s enough discussing what might happen and time to see what actually happened! Without further adieu, here is the 2022 NBA Draft!

The Oklahoma City Thunder wasted no time in making their decision. While there was some back and forth, it was said early in the 2021-22 season that Chet Holmgren (82 overall) was the player the Thunder have had their eye on all season long and they now were given the chance to make that dream a reality. Weird body types has never scared OKC away from a player - look no further than Aleksej Pokusevski - but Holmgren has got the skills to put it all together and become a true difference maker in the league.

A core of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Josh Giddey and now Chet Holmgren may signal to the rest of the league that the Thunder are ready to compete.

With the New York Knicks on the clock, there’s no doubt who they are going to take to give this franchise the kick in the *** it needs and to put a true superstar in NYC to dazzle the fans in MSG…

Oh no! The New York Knicks do what only the Knicks (and maybe the Kings) would have done and go against conventional wisdom and pass on the 2nd of two franchise players! With the 2nd pick of the draft, they selected 18-year old point guard J.D. Davison (75) out of Alabama. When you are blessed with the 2nd overall pick, you don’t draft for position but for best player available. The Knicks did the opposite. With Julius Randle and Obi Toppin at power forward, they seemingly decided to pass on the most gifted scorer in the draft to draft a point guard when they already have four others - Derrick Rose, Kemba Walker, Alec Burks, Miles McBride - on the roster.

While all but McBride are on the wrong side of 30, Davison is a long ways away from being ready to contribute in a meaningful way and may not be ready to start until the end of his rookie contract. What an absolute blunder by the Knickerbockers!

The Houston Rockets got the guy they wanted all along! With Alperen Sengun slotted in as a full-time center, Banchero can step in as the starter at the four and make Christian Wood expendable. Look for Houston to put the veteran big man on the market immediately following the draft and continue to rebuild around their young threesome of players.

With the 4th pick for the 2nd consecutive year, the Raptors selected shooting guard Jaden Hardy (78) from the G-League Ignite squad. If the Knicks were looking to add a dynamic guard, this was the guy they should have gone with. He’s got the makings of a true elite scoring guard in the mold of young Derrick Rose with his athletic ability but shows the makings of shooting it from deep like Rose never could. There’s a chance we look back at the draft and argue that Hardy is the best player from this class if things all work out in his favor.

The Magic and Hawks make a trade at pick #5 and the Hawks immediately selected big man Damion Collins (77) out of Kentucky. A pure defender and rebounder, he should slot in as a backup big man to Onyeka Okongwu (80) at center. Okongwu will now get his chance to step in and be the starting center for Atlanta after spending his first two seasons playing behind Capela.

The Pistons missed out on potentially adding a dynamic wing scorer to go next to Cade Cunningham after sliding down two spots from the lottery results and draft 18-year old Jalen Duren (79) out of Memphis. With Isaiah Stewart, Brook Lopez and Kelly Olynyk already in town, Duren will have to beat them out for any playing time this season. He’s got great potential and maybe a “redshirt” season would be best for him to start his career.

With absolutely zero other point guards on the roster, the Wizards decide to turn the keys over to Duke point guard Jeremy Roach (75). A strong defender, solid shooter and highly intelligent floor general, Roach will hope to be playing alongside Bradley Beal for the foreseeable future…if Beal decides to stick around in Washington.

One of the players that saw his name in the top-5 of mock drafts all year long, Kendall Brown (78) finally comes off the board with the 8th overall selection to the Charlotte Hornets. At 6’8”, he’s a multi-position defender that can legitimately guard the two through four with ease, facilitates with the ball in his hands and has a developing offensive game that should grow next to a lead guard like LaMelo Ball (89).

The Nuggets, coming off an incredibly disappointing season, nab Jaden Ivey (78) out of Purdue. Another strong two guard that can both score and distribute effectively, the Nuggets’ offense should be tough to stop with Nikola Jokic (95) and Jamal Murray (87) also moving the ball within the flow of their offense.

The Spurs select one of the better 3&D prospects in the draft in Michigan’s Caleb Houstan (77). He should be an immediate upgrade over Doug McDermott (75) at the small forward position and give the spacing needed when playing next to Dejounte Murray (87), Devin Vassell (78) and Draymond Green (83).

Speaking of weird body types, the Grizzlies pegged Kenneth Lofton Jr. (73) with the 11th overall pick, the biggest shock of the draft outside of the Knicks taking Davison at #2. At 6’7” and 280-pounds, Lofton Jr. has the complete opposite body type that most NBA teams are looking for. While he’s an excellent interior scorer and strong rebounder, it remains to be seen whether those skills can translate for a player of his size and shape. He’s also playing squarely behind Jaren Jackson Jr. (85) and Steven Adams (81) for big man minutes.

The Blazers looking for wing help for Damian Lillard (91) selected Marcus Bagley (76) out of Arizona State. Another 3&D prospect much like Caleb Houston, Bagley has the size at 6’8” and rebounding ability to easily slide down to the four and play the power forward for Portland. Solid get this late in the draft.

Auburn’s Jabari Smith (78) goes 13th overall to the Indiana Pacers! The 6’8” stretch four shows tremendous form and range on his three-point shot and is an elite shot blocker for his position as well. At just 19-years of age, if he continues to develop his game he could be the steal of the lottery.

A strange pick here by the Hornets considering they have LaMelo Ball already, but Charlotte trades back into the first round by moving two points guards - Terry Rozier (82) & T.J. McConnell (77) - to draft the French PG|SG|SF prospect Ousman Dieng (76). At 6’9” and 185-pounds, Dieng already shows great instincts on the defensive end when guarding on an island or in the pick-and-roll and has a great feel for the game as a passer and crafty scorer when on the move towards the hoop. It will be interesting to see how Charlotte utilizes both Ball and Dieng going forward.

            —-----

The Thunder were back on the clock with the 21st pick of the draft and selected Max Christie (76) out of Michigan State. An absolutely elite shooter from all ranges, he pairs it with solid handles for his position and the tools to be a solid defender on the wing. While Lu Dort (80) is the great defender with solid shooting ability, Christie is the opposite, which should add to the Thunder’s bench depth.

            Non-Lottery Picks:
            15 - PG Kennedy Chandler - Bulls - 76
            16 - PG TyTy Washington - Magic - 78

Baffling decision by the Knicks to pass up on Banchero -- not sure what the Wolves were doing trading for Terry Rozier and Gordon Hayward either (are either really going to be enough to make the team playoff worthy?). Like what the Thunder did, strong draft.

Knicks are gunna Knick, I guess? I thought for sure they would go Banchero and then could start shopping Julius Randle to build around Barrett and Banchero, but they royally messed that up. In the end, I really hope JD Davison develops into a good starting PG for them because I want the Knicks to improve but this is a draft day decision that will set the franchise back even further.

No clue what Minnesota is doing. Guess they really want to compete right now and adding Hayward and Rozier next to Edwards and KAT helps, but those are two good-not-great players that they mortgaged their picks for.

                ----------

Editor's Note: After the draft I turned on 30-team control so I will now control the trades and free agent decisions teams make. I'm hoping that will keep teams from doing things that are just absolutely crazy and baffling while trying to keep things realistic.

Thanks! Like I said in an earlier post, I debated on going Paolo Banchero over Chet Holmgren and was worried about making the "wrong pick" but between those two I don't think we could have gone wrong. I know the SGA-Holmgren pick & rolls will be a ton of fun, but what I really want to get going is the pick & pop for three!

Re: Thunder Up! Rebuild in OKC [NBA 2k22]

With the 2022 NBA Draft having come and gone, the next order of business was for contract options - those of both the player and team variety - to be decided upon. With the free agency moratorium just days away, the divisions made on these options could shift the landscape of the league and see franchises do a complete 180 on their free agency plans.

The three largest salaries that were sitting on player options belonged to Philadelphia’s James Harden ($47.37m, 92 OVR), Houston’s John Wall ($47.37m, 83) and the Lakers’ Russell Westbrook ($47.06m, 79). With both Wall and Westbrook on a clear decline, there was no way they were passing up this final, massive payday. Now that they have opted in, it wouldn’t surprise anyone if both Houston and Los Angeles were on the phones looking to trade them away as the Rockets want to build around their young core and continue their rebuild while the Lakers try to get LeBron James some extra help in what is likely his final season in the NBA.

With James Harden, there was a thought that he could opt out of this final year in order to lock himself into a long-term deal of four or five years at age 32. The 76ers were non-committal to a lengthy deal at this time and want to see the Harden/Embiid pairing one more time before deciding on the best plan going forward.

The next two richest player options to be decided on were held by 2nd Team All-NBA guard Bradley Beal ($37.26, 89) and two-time NBA champion Kyrie Irving ($36.93m, 92). To the surprise of almost nobody, both players decline the options in order to become unrestricted free agents, immediately catapulting themselves to the top players available list.

For Bradley Beal, he’s been pretty adamant about wanting to stick it out in Washington and lead the Wizards for as long as he’s in the NBA. After another losing season and missing out on the playoffs, is there a chance he decides it’s time to move elsewhere and begin actually winning? With his All-NBA selection, he’s eligible for the supermax from the Wizards and that will certainly play into his decision, but Beal himself has been mum all season long about whether or not that will be a deciding factor or not.

Then there is the mercurial point guard Kyrie Irving. Seemingly overshadowed by 3rd Team All-NBA and Finals MVP Kevin Durant and 6th Man of the Year and 1st Team All Defense member Ben Simmons, sources around Irving say that the talented-yet-troubled guard might be looking to find a team to call his own. Yes, he is a two-time champ. The first came in 2016 when LeBron James brought a title back to Cleveland (though Irving hit the biggest shot of the entire series) and now Durant led the Nets back from a 3-1 series deficit to win it this past year. Irving is not known as The Man for either of those rings and that really irks him.

Other sources say that Kyrie - in his age 30 season - is looking for a 5-year max deal to lock himself into a massive contract to carry him through the rest of his career. With Kevin Durant locked up for four years, will the Nets tie themselves to the both of them, possibly linking their contract lengths to come off the books at the same time to give themselves some cap flexibility when they are both in the twilights of their careers?

Other players that saw their team options all declined were Al Horford ($26.5m, 79), Eric Bledsoe ($19.38m, 77), Josh Richardson ($18.29m, 77), Kentavious Caldwell-Pope ($14m, 77) and Josh Hart ($12.96m, 80). Breaking down each of them, Horford at age 36 seems like he could see a steep decline in his play going into another year this late into his career, so Boston cut bait and may look to bring him back on a more team-friendly deal. Bledsoe is a shell of himself at this point and playing behind Damian Lillard and Anfernee Simons anyways, so ridding themselves of his nearly $20 million in salary is a win. While both Richardson and Caldwell-Pope are still legitimate contributors on rebuilding teams, it was strange to see both of them having their options declined when they are at a manageable number and both tradable assets to contenders. With the Blazers declining Bledsoe’s option, it was a complete shock to the rest of the league that they also declined Josh Hart’s. At just 27-years old, he’s got the skills to play both wing positions. The team option they declined was actually a 2-year team option, meaning they could have had him under a very manageable contract for two more seasons. Are the Blazers clearing the books to bring in a big name player to pair with Lillard or looking to completely blow it up and deal Dame out of Portland?

                      --------------------

In Oklahoma City, the Thunder had decisions to make on three of their players. Of the three team options, the only one that was picked up was for Isaiah Roby (76) at $1.93m. A young, spry big man that can shoot, Roby at that price was too good to let go, even after drafting Chet Holmgren to play immediately. The same couldn’t be said for center Mike Muscala (75) and his $3.5m option or wing Vit Krejci (72) and his 2-year team option starting at $1.56m. There just wasn’t going to be any future for either of them in OKC and the team made the easy decision to cut bait and move on.

The lone player option belonged to 31-year old center Derrick Favors (77). The best rebounder on the team last year and a mid-range specialist at the five, there were murmurs that he would decline his player option to test free agency to catch on with a winner and play some meaningful basketball. Instead, Favors opted into his $10.18m player option and now will mentor Chet Holmgren (82) and push him to earn the starting center spot. Or, the two could start together and give the Thunder two legitimate and competent big men on the floor at the same time.

I'm shocked to see Jabari Smith fall to as far as he did, and of course the Knicks draft is atrocious, or at least it should be. Most curious though is the Magic's decision to trade No. 5 for Capela and a lottery protected first. I don't see the upside there for them at all. Capela may help them win, but only like 5 games; they definitely aren't a title contender. And the first being lottery protected doesn't have a great upside for Orlando. Weird decision.

Strangely he fell much further than I expected as well. He's well rated, incredibly young, has great potential and already has two elite skills: 3PT shooting and shot blocking. He's going to be a tremendous pickup for the Pacers.

The Knicks just cannot get out of their own way it seems. To their credit, JD Davison was rated as a top-5 player the entire season by all of the draft services and experts and he's got some skills but he's a long ways away from being ready to contribute. Obviously, it makes it much worse when they could have made the easy decision to take Paolo Banchero and be done with it.

The Orlando trade is definitely strange no matter how you look at it. I think between that deal and Minnesota making two separate deals to acquire Gordon Hayward and Terry Rozier III from Charlotte is a big reason why I decided to go into 30-team control. I want to minimize the amount of foolish trades as possible, but also know I don't have a ton of time to survey the landscape of the entire league on a regular basis, so I'm a bit torn.

Two possessions. One on offense. One on defense.

That was all that it took for the Thunder faithful to be thrown into a flurry watching their #1 overall draft pick, Chet Holmgren (82 OVR) play in the Las Vegas Summer League. Playing against a Milwaukee Bucks front line that features 2nd round pick Walker Kessler, who was drafted by the Warriors before being cut and then signed by Milwaukee, Holmgren was expected to dominate.

After securing the opening tip, the Thunder started by peppering the ball around in their flow offense. A late shot clock action called for Holmgren to set the screen for RJ Hampton at the top of the key. He delivered a strong screen before flying to the rim. Walker Kessler was able to get a finger on the pass, but Holmgren was able to corral it anyways and finish with two-hands as the crowd went bananas!

His size and length is staggering, especially on the summer league floor with players that most likely won’t be regulars in the pros, but the finish was still something we expect to see quite often for the Thunder. Time to play some defense. The Bucks didn’t exactly have a bunch of offensive assassins, but Jordan Nwora was active early and was able to shake Tre Mann at the top of the key. In what looked like an open lane for an easy two turned into the 2nd Holmgren highlight in as many possessions.

Flying out of seemingly nowhere, Chet Holmgren elevated, extended and swatted Nwora’s layup attempt. If the dunk got the crowd on their feet, this dunk had them up and chanting like it was a playoff game!

Holmgren was able to carry this performance on throughout the game. In 30 minutes of play, the rookie with the biggest target on his back poured in 23 points, grabbed 17 rebounds, dished out two assists, had two steals and that lone blocked shot. Shooting 10-18 from the field and knocking down his only three-point attempt on the night, Holmgren announced his arrival to the NBA in a big way.

                                Double Nuclear Day

With the buzz of Vegas Summer League over and done with and the league counting down the days to opening night, it was thought we had hit a quiet period for the entire league to take a collective breath and prepare for the season-long marathon ahead. That was until two teams decided to press that big, red button on the GM’s desk and blow it all up. Let’s start with the first team that went all-in on a youth movement in the Houston Rockets.

The first deal that went down for the Rockets was trading John Wall (81) to the Los Angeles Lakers for Russell Westbrook (77). The two maligned stars were both on the last year of a massive contract and not quite fitting in with their current roster. The Rockets have a plethora of young players they want to get on the floor and Wall is nearing the end of his career, so he was bound to leave. Westbrook was playing too much hero ball for LeBron James’ (93) liking, and with this likely being The King’s final season, the Lakers wanted to upgrade the position. In the swap, the Rockets were able to grab a 2024 2nd round pick from the Lakers but, more importantly, a 2027 unprotected 1st round pick as well. Who knows what that franchise will look like in four year’s time, but the Rockets have all the time in the world to sit back and wait it out.

With Wall gone, Christian Wood (84) was the next likely target to be moved. That became pretty obvious once they selected Paolo Banchero (82) with the 3rd overall pick, but now it was inevitable. Coming off of a disappointing loss in the NBA Finals to the Brooklyn Nets, the Dallas Mavericks were desperate to upgrade their front court and did so by moving veteran Dwight Powell (78), project wing Keyontae Johnson (75), a 2027 1st round swap and a 2026 2nd round pick. In the Finals, the Mavericks were starting a four wing lineup which led to Spencer Dinwiddie (81) starting out guarding Kevin Durant (97). The addition of Wood and drafting of Nikola Jovic (77) instantly improves their roster balance, making them one of the favorites out West.

The next team that decided it was time to make some serious moves was none other than the Utah Jazz. With Danny Ainge at the helm and their two superstars - Donovan Mitchell (89) and Rudy Gobert (88) - not seeing eye-to-eye, Ainge was faced with a decision. He was told by both players that he had to pick one to go or else the other was asking out. He acquiesced…by sending both packing.

Rudy Gobert, one of the best defenders in the game, was shipped up to Minnesota to play with Karl-Anthony Towns (88), Anthony Edwards (85) and D’Angelo Russell (82) to be their defensive anchor. Coming back to Utah was Malik Beasley (78), Ainge’s old friend Terry Rozier III (82), young wing prospect Leandro Bolmaro (74), a 2023 unprotected 1st, a 2025 top-3 protected 1st and a 2027 pick swap.

If you think this deal was bold, wait until you see what Ainge did next.

The New York Knicks finally get their guy! Donovan Mitchell is off to NYC to play in The Mecca! The main piece going to the Jazz is 2nd overall pick of the 2022 NBA Draft JD Davison (77). The Knicks made the mistake of taking him over Paolo Banchero and instantly flipped him for their superstar guard. Ainge wasn’t afraid to take a chance on the young but talented guard out of Alabama and he should be given the time to grow. Also returning to Utah in the deal is Mitchell Robinson (82), Immanuel Quickley (81), Quentin Grimes (76), a 2023 top-10 1st round pick from Dallas and a 2026 unprotected 1st from the Knicks.

The rebuild went even further. With JD Davison in town, Mike Conley (81) was sent packing to New Orleans to compete for a title with the young core of the Pelicans. The Jazz sent Jared Butler (75) and recently acquired Leandro Bomaro with him to the Big Easy. In return, the Jazz acquired Devonte Graham (76), Kira Lewis Jr. (76), Larry Nance Jr. (77) and a 2024 unprotected 1st from the Lakers. The Jazz are expected to cut Nance loose and let him pursue a spot on a competing team.
