I know you can't read too much into these two results. So it doesn't mean the team is good.

But I do feel comfortable saying that your floor is higher than last year. There was zero struggle in putting way two bad teams and you seemed to actually use your size advantage.

We'll have to see how they do on the road in raucous environments against powerhouses like North Dakota State and Monmouth to compare.

Tovarich: That team had a lot of team unity and much more talent than the first two teams, so this was a bit of a step up. We started a little slow but we caught fire after about 4 minutes. Hale must have had some magic on him in the first half. It seemed like whoever he passed to shot 100%. Same for their PG. Like most things, it didn't carry over to the second half.

Reporter: So Hale's injury must not be significant since he came back relatively quickly?

Tovarich: Yeah, very minor. He missed 4 minutes and it'll be gone by the time the Great Alaska Shootout starts next week.

Reporter: You've won the rebounding battle 3 times in a row. Are you optimistic?

Tovarich: That's probably more a result of our sharpshooting to start the season and our opponents haven't been great. They got quite a few offensive rebounds today. Fleming only had 6, but if that's all he gets on a bad day, that's awesome. We've had more than a few times where my starting C gets 1-3 for an entire game. He was up against a SR, so I expected a slight struggle, but he scored it well. It was kind of a group rebounding effort today. But we'll see how it goes when we're not shooting like this because we won't keep going for 95 per game when the competition gets better.

Reporter: What's a successful Great Alaska Shootout for this team?

Tovarich: We get a top 15 team right off the bat, and a tough second game either way. I just want to see what happens when the FR get thrown into the fire. We haven't been punched in the mouth yet, and we will be in this tournament, so success is if we punch back and respond well. The quality of the tournament is such that winning all 3 is unlikely if we're being realistic. It'd be huge if we did and we'd have the confidence to play with anyone, but we still have to go on the road and do it after that for the first time.

Tovarich: Great start to that one. I think we jumped out to a 30-13 lead. They narrowed it a little there late in the half, but we were able to get a few 3's there in the second half. We got just enough steals and just enough offensive rebounds to run a little clock after they came out hot. Great win. I'm pretty sure they're overranked, but time will tell.

Reporter: Where does this rank in program wins?

Tovarich: Obviously winning @ Arizona a few years ago was the biggest. This might be second though, at least according to the rankings. We'll see. They're a small team. A 6'7" PF starting at the 5 seems like it's going to be a disaster for them in the Big 10.

Reporter: Was it a big deal to tie in rebounds with a power school anyway?

Tovarich: Since we have more size than them, probably not. Fleming seems like an improvement at rebounding, but he was in foul trouble because the refs wanted to call him every time he breathed on someone. But we got just enough and it never felt like we were getting dominated on the boards. But part of our rebounding numbers are us making more shots than our opponents. I am confident we're still in the negative when it comes to offensive rebounds, so that would be a place to improve still.

Reporter: Why so few minutes for the bench?

Tovarich: They were efficient, except for Grady, so maybe they deserved some more minutes. Illinois wasn't playing their bench either. That's the second game in a row against an 8-man rotation and even then the 8th was sparingly playing. I have confidence in the bench, but the starters were great too.

Reporter: Are you surprised to get New Mexico State tomorrow instead of Villanova?

Tovarich: Not at all. The Aggies won 29 games last year and Villanova finished 10th in the Big East. Obviously New Mexico State's really good. We played them two years in a row but apparently before they became really awesome.

I think we can officially say that this team is better than last year. Let's hope it's good enough to have 3 or fewer losses. And you tied in rebounds for this game at 20 apiece.

They're better, but it will take some time to see if they're more consistent. Last year's team beat some tournament teams in Washington State and Pepperdine, so they had plenty of talent but they had some bad losses. This team still has time to do that too when it finally leaves home. Illinois was small and starting a 6'7" true FR PF at the center position. It would've been a little embarrassing to get outrebounded too badly by them, but I expect at the end of the season, that team's not really going to be ranked if the CPU is wise enough to exploit their massive weakness at center.

Tovarich: Big guys were awesome. We needed it. Everyone else struggled with shooting. We were able to create a lot of turnovers, which made a big difference. Their 3-point shooting was insane in the second half but we were so consistent in the paint that we could almost score at will down there, so it never made a dent.

Reporter: Why does this team force so many turnovers?

Tovarich: Both our guards are 6'4". 6'9" and 6'11" down low. That's awesome size especially for a school of our size. We deflect so many passes because of that. Fleming ends up getting credit for a lot of them but he's just grabbing loose balls. It's usually someone else who deflected it. It helped they were playing too fast for their own good. They rushed a lot. We even had 8 turnovers though, which is as bad as it gets for us. They're aggressive, and that can go for good or for bad.

Reporter: Are you ready to say this team is really good yet?

Tovarich: Let's see what we can do against UCLA tomorrow, and we have a couple early road tests with Temple and my nemesis Connecticut. It's still early.

Reporter: You haven't won your home tournament yet. Would it be a big deal?

Tovarich: Even if we had won it, it's a solid field. It's a challenge to get through 3 games in 3 days and beat 3 good teams.

Reporter: You debuted at #3 in the mid-major poll when it's usually 7-10. Do you think there's a chance of being ranked this year?

Tovarich: It's possible if we keep playing like this. But we have 3 top-17 teams in the next 5 games. We'll know a lot about ourselves after that.

Tovarich: Great to finally break through and win our home tournament. That was easier than expected. Seems like they had a bad shooting night, though they also lost their opener to Santa Barbara so who knows if they're really a top 25 team or not. They're not as small as Illinois but their bigs are 6'6" and 6'9" so we have the height advantage. We squeeked out rebounding with one of their big guys on the bench for most of the game and them missing 7 more shots than we did. Can't complain about much though.

Reporter: Are you ready to say your team is good yet?

Tovarich: We're off to a nice start. We haven't left home yet though. Let's see how we do on this mini 3-game road trip first.

Reporter: How great is the Hale-Fleming combo?

Tovarich: For freshmen lacking team unity, they're going great. Everyone Hale passed to in the post was finishing tonight. Just like last game, we didn't look great from outside. Other than Hale and the bigs, the rest of the team was 4/14. They were 10/24 last game. The big guys at some point are probably going to struggle when we play some other good bigs. Illinois and UCLA maybe were just good matchups for us. Fleming's obviously rebounding better than anyone we've had. Hale's doing a great job not turning the ball over for a freshman. Fleming's scoring and rebounding which I've rarely gotten. He could get some double-doubles if I left him in long enough but that hasn't been necessary. We're not having close games at the end so far. Obviously this team has more overall talent, and these weird things called Seniors that give us some team unity but the FR haven't had a game where they look like FR yet. It's bound to happen but I love it so far.

Reporter: Do you expect to be ranked Monday?

Tovarich: Not yet. We're good, but it took Utah State getting to 13-0 last year to squeeze in. We might have more quality wins so far than they did but I expect the polls stay skeptical of us until we do it on the road. We're 47-5 at home since we moved to D1 and then 7-2 in our tournament so I'm sure that's all factored in until we go on the road.

Reporter: Why do you think you're not getting blocked as much as last season?

Tovarich: Fleming is much more aggressive. He dunks more for one. But also, Grady didn't become a block magnet until late in the season. Grady's 6'10" himself so he isn't small. Maybe the other teams catch on to something later. We're more dependent on the bigs this year. We don't have Spears or Pippen. We've been inconsistent from the outside so far. We haven't played any really good big men yet either.

Tovarich: That is why we don't get excited about all the things we did at home. -4 in rebounds against Rider, whatever that even is. The shooting, particularly from the outside was dreadful and has been for several games now. That kind of garbage performance won't beat Temple, let alone UConn. We'd only been getting blocked 1.5 times per game. 4 blocks by RIDER.

Reporter: But it's still a win?

Tovarich: Yeah, luckily there's no style points. Hell, maybe even the committee will somehow be impressed we won a road game by 10. I'm sure not.

                    Reporter: How about the defense?

Tovarich: It was mostly ok. We did let that Connolly guy destroy us with a bunch of 3's out of halftime though. The turnover numbers were decent. That part luckily traveled on the road. Not much else did.

Reporter: How do you assess Fleming's first road game?

Tovarich: It was a rough first half. 6/13? with I think 4 rebounds. Much more efficient in the second half. Rebounding overall wasn't great. But hey, I'm saying it wasn't great and he had 6. I still don't know if we've had someone average 6 for a season and that might be about as bad as it gets for him. But it was Rider and it's not a pleasing result regardless of it being a win.

Reporter: Are you disappointed in the polls?

Tovarich: I don't know what to make of them this early. UCLA moved up a spot after we beat them. 3-0 Santa Clara is ranked. We sit 3rd still in the mid poll. Beating 2 top 14 teams sure doesn't seem to have counted for literally anything so far.

Tovarich: That looks flattering in the end but that was a tight game. They lead us 53-49 about 4 minutes into the second half before their 3-point shooting finally cooled off and we went on the 27-3 run to end it. That's a far better performance than 2 days ago. I hope it's not an indication where we play up and down to our competition like we tended to do last year.

Reporter: Why do you think they abandoned their zone defense?

Tovarich: Yes, the "famous" Temple zone. I'd give that moniker to Syracuse personally, but Verne is a little older than me. I don't know why they did that. We were 6/19 on 3's in the first half and Farley was all 6. Everyone else was 0/8, so I'd reached the conclusion that only he was allowed to shoot any, but we'd likely have gone 6/19 again if they let us. Once we got them into man, we were able to get some fouls and the big guys dominated down low. Not getting a single shot blocked might be a first for us. Fran Dunphy surely has been around this game long enough to know things magically change at halftime a lot. So their 8/12 on 3's in the first half had little chance of carrying over and it sure didn't. 4/15 in the second half and 3 of the 4 were quite late there.

Reporter: Is the rebounding improvement from last game significant?

Tovarich: Not really. They got us 16-13 in the first half, but they missed a ton of shots in the second. They went like 5 minutes with just the one basket, so we had some easy chances at borderline uncontested defensive rebounds. I'm quite sure we're not doing anything differently on defense this season, but the field goal defense is responsible for the rebounding improvement. If you take just the sheer quantity of our misses and our opponents, we should be further ahead in rebounds than we are, which says that we give up more offensive rebounds than we get and that's more significant a statistic than the total numbers.

Reporter: Is there any chance of signing anyone when the signing window opens tomorrow?

Tovarich: None. I haven't even offered a scholarship. I've pretty much stopped trying to. Everything is the long game. We go for guys who are above our pay grade so to speak and wait for them to fall through the cracks. Once we get through the signing window and wait for everyone else to figure out their plan B, then we know who is left and we go from there. I haven't even had a visit yet. We're just calling for now and saving our resources for later in the season when the schedule lightens up and we have more time, but also so we don't waste too much on people we don't have a chance at.

Tovarich: Great execution. We finished strong there.

Reporter: What are you talking about coach?

Tovarich: The perfectly executed pick and roll we ran for Grady to lay it in with 5 seconds to go to get us to 100.

Reporter: Do you think you've gotten your revenge for 2 years ago?

Tovarich: It wasn't quite the 29 point win they got. But it was nice to full court press them up double digits and lay it in with 5 seconds to go. It wasn't quite the 3 they shot on us up 31 with 9 seconds to go, but we weren't open for that, so we took what they gave us.

Reporter: How do you assess your start?

Tovarich: 3 turnovers in 39 seconds wasn't ideal lol. They mimicked us nicely though and I think it took them all of 1:15 to get 3 turnovers too.

Reporter: You didn't full court press at first?

Tovarich: I wasn't going to. I was going to play them straight up. Then the ugly start with the 3 turnovers, with Hehn having 4 blocks against us in 5 minutes and a 7-2 rebounding deficit, I figured we needed some help. Then of course there was them full court pressing us after every basket. It's an odd strategy for a team that only wants to go 9 deep, two of which only played 5 minutes. You'd think it's not wise to get them so tired. They backed off their press just before halftime. But we came out strong after halftime, so I decided to pile on like Calhoun did to us two years ago. Portland State later this year, and Drexel some other year can take note and know what to expect too.

                        Reporter: How about Fleming's performance?

Tovarich: 2 rebounds is rough. That 7'2" monster UConn has for a C though is dominant. I'm not surprised he got humbled a bit there. We're pretty accustomed to C's getting only 2 boards in a game, and that's often against much lesser competition. We finally found the 3 though. Our PF's did a great job against the press, especially in the 2nd half when Hehn went from 4 blocks and 0 fouls to 4 fouls. We did a great job getting to the line. A 26-6 FT advantage on the road is incredible. We must've brought our refs with us, if we have our own. I don't even know how Independents get refs.

Reporter: Is it a big deal to play your first game as a ranked team?

Tovarich: I guess? That was kind of unexpected. You'd think the week you beat two top 14 teams you move up and you don't. Then you go squeak by lowly Rider and a .500 Temple team and suddenly they're impressed. Go figure.

Reporter: How big is it to have the program's first home game with a power school?

Tovarich: Well, first regular season one anyway. We've had Nebraska and Texas Tech in the NIT, though both of those should have been away games. Someone at the NCAA is really confused about how brackets work. But not many are willing. You figure the Washington schools and Oregon State are about it. Maybe if we could see who was coming up here for a tournament in advance, we could snag them if they want a warmup game, but we don't get to see that in time.

Reporter: Also how big is it that both teams are ranked, a first in school history?

Tovarich: Yeah, maybe we'll get a home game on TV finally. Maybe, I don't know how Independents get on TV either.

I think you can finally say this team is good. The signs were there early, but these 3 power school wins have confirmed it.

I may reluctantly accept this team is good. But I need them to avoid such rat poison.

Tovarich: We only had 16 extra shots than them, so no wonder we couldn't win. We even lead 55-42 there after we came out of halftime strong. They got it back tied at 58. It's easy to come back when you shoot 15/21 in the second half, and make 12 in a row late. We got 2 misses at the FT line, but shocker, they got them both right back for an easy putback, and I think one of those got them another and-1. We made 4 of our last 18. Can't win like that.

Reporter: Why do you think they full court pressed up 7 with 15 seconds and then shot a 3 at the buzzer?

Tovarich: Yeah, they weren't being very subtle there were they?

Reporter: Was it too much rat poison coach?

Tovarich: I'm sure it didn't help.

Tovarich: Luckily we improved a little in the paint in the second half. 7/22 going into halftime was the most pitiful thing I've ever seen. I know that 7'1" C of theirs is pretty good, but he didn't seem to have much do to with it. Every big guy suddenly had T-Rex arms. Thank goodness for Farley. Fleming got a bit better in the second half. Rebounding was pitiful. We were lucky to make use of our 14 extra shots because they were far more efficient shooting than we were. I've seen every big guy be amazing in a game, and now every one of them was pretty rough. It's crazy an entire position group can all simultaneously be hot and cold at the same time.

Reporter: Was the game bad offense or good defense?

Tovarich: Mostly bad offense. It was baffling to short arm so many easy layups and for some reason, almost never dunk the damn ball when we could. They turned the ball over too much, otherwise their shooting was solid. They should've shot 3's on every possession and they'd have beaten us. Though their bigs were 9/12 too, so could've done more damage there too.

Reporter: Overall are you happy they bounced back from their first loss?

Tovarich: I guess. That's a top 25 team, so it's a good result, but it was frustrating. I tend to spend more worrying about what's broken and not feeding the team's ego about what it's doing right. Better basketball than that will be needed.

Reporter: Now that the 10-game road trip is here, do you still think it was a good idea?

Tovarich: Ha, I don't know. Does it really matter if it's 5 now and 5 later or 10 in a row? There are solid teams on this trip-BYU, San Diego, San Diego State, Santa Barbara beat UCLA, Hawaii, Rice has a solid record. No one elite. We got 3 of our 5 power opponents at home this year. That's not such a big number overall, but I think the mid and major schools are more frequent and tougher and we have fewer small schools. We have a lot of losable games on this trip, but no one we should be backing down from. I think these solid teams with good records will help us more than going to say an Auburn who turned out to be 6-25.
