Yeah, mostly, and I think they were strictly man to man the entire game, and the guards were rarely if ever open and weren't really doing anything when they were. Fullerton reminded me of my SMC legacy where every WCC team was just turning every game into a jumpshooting competition and it tended not to matter how well I defended any of the shooting. Sometimes I'm tempted to tweak the sliders, because I lead the country in FG % every year, but I also have the worst FG % defense in the country, so it evens out I guess.

Tovarich: Rough start. Down 22-13 after 5 or 6 minutes. Couldn't rebound to save our lives. Couldn't hit a 3 to save our lives. Wilkins was amazing against the press. He was tough and finished down low. He drew fouls. He made a lot of foul shots. Incredible performance from him. The guards struggled again. I'm not sure what's up with them. Hopefully they'll shoot their way out of it in the return game here.
Reporter: What are the challenges of playing the same team twice in a row this week?
Tovarich: We know exactly what they'll do. They'll full court press us after every basket. Hopefully the refs are in the same kind of mood these ones were tonight. They'll play almost exclusively 2-3 zone. We'll perhaps give up on the 3's sooner if we're 1-10 at halftime like tonight. We know we need to rebound better. We know we need to cover their guards better. We know the bench may need to play some extra minutes if the pace gets out of control. It's nothing we didn't learn from playing them for 7 minutes tonight. We'll just see who plays better next game than they did tonight.
Reporter: Will a 3-2 road trip be good enough to get into the tournament?
Tovarich: I think so. We're in a strong position in the RPI. Joey Brackets hasn't put anyone out yet, so we'll see what he says. We were 20 or so spots away with 8 losses last year. Hopefully if we have at worst 5, that'll be good enough.
Reporter: What did you make of Borders struggling against the press compared to Wilkins?
Tovarich: He's probably leaving if I don't talk him into staying, so this wasn't a performance that really motivates me to try to talk him into staying. He often has this issue against the press. PF's are often not a big part of our halfcourt offense. We are in the 4-out so often that sometimes they're away from the basket where they're not much of a threat. So when the perfect scenario for a big game comes along for that position, they should take advantage like Wilkins did.Comment

Tovarich: Ugly game for a while there. We shot a little better as it went on. We certainly went backwards in rebounding. We shot 3's better...eventually, so that took some pressure off other parts of the game for sure. We've got to a lot better next time out. That kind of performance isn't going to beat DePaul.
Reporter: Earlier in the season, I asked if you play up and down to your opponents. Are you sure that isn't true?
Tovarich: We make it look like that because we do just enough to get by. But it's often because we just have to make it harder for ourselves by not rebouding, like today.
Reporter: So what was different today than Monday?
Tovarich: After starting the first 2 minutes without a basket, we picked it up a little, so we didn't dig ourselves another 22-13 hole. They struggled to shoot, so we had a 26-19 lead and they gave up on the press at that point, and didn't bring it back until about 5 minutes to go in the second half, so we were in a half court offense a lot. We started 1-8 on 3's, but we turned that around all of a sudden. The refs didn't call many fouls, so our 24-4 advantage last game was only 11-8. Our rebounding got worse, though just barely. They gave us some boards at the end of the first game on all their 3's. They were mostly hitting them at the end this game.
Reporter: Will this season be a failure if you don't make it to the tournament?
Tovarich: I don't think so. We're way ahead of schedule, but worst case scenario, we finish like 2-3, so 25-6? If that doesn't get in, you question if we're allowed in.Comment

Tovarich: That looked bleak down 22-9 early. We couldn't do much right at the beginning. They were killing us on the boards. 13-5 at the half. Rebounds were few and far between in the second half, but they cooled off some. Anyone in the paint wasn't going to miss much apparently. But once we stopped giving them all the second chance points, we came back.
Reporter: Is this team definitely in the tournament now?
Tovarich: I don't see how we can't be. Just can't fall apart at the end here.
Reporter: What are the odds of a team having two guys named Vitor Markovic even though one is from Montenegro and one is Serbian?
Tovarich: Crazy huh? Can't say I've seen that before. I assumed they were related until I saw they had the same first name too.
Reporter: Why is your team so good at free throw shooting?
Tovarich: No one has any funky wind up motions, no one's off to the side, no one's got one of those delays in their shot like a Japanese pitcher. Everyone's got a nice clean release.
Reporter: Why do you think both teams were so effective scoring in the paint?
Tovarich: They were in a lot of 2-3 zone, and they seemed slow reacting when we got it down low. In our case, we just constantly let them get behind us, or they had all those easy rebounds in the first half that lead to simple putbacks. Both teams struggled from outside. Just how it is sometimes.Comment

Tovarich: Good easy win.
Reporter: Are you sure you wouldn't like to nitpick something about it coach?
Tovarich: OK, Atkinson only had one freaking rebound. I mean, I'll get over it because he scored 33, but ONE rebound for a 7 footer? That's embarrassing. Out SG had 5! I know the C team doesn't get a lot of minutes, but they immediately turned the ball over twice in 15 seconds. Other than Taft, who goes missing frequently, the bench was awful.
Reporter: Since St. Mary's lost on Monday, you and Western Michigan should be 1 vs 2 in the mid-major poll. Is it the Game of the Century?
Tovarich: Absolutely. Makes perfect sense.
Reporter: Do you wish you could join a conference coach?
Tovarich: I'd love to but we have been told by the NCAA that no conferences are ever allowed to change ever again. They looked into the future and saw 16 and 18 team conferences that stretched across the whole country and ruined everything, so there'll be no changes.Comment

Tovarich: Nice win. We overcame some bad rebounding. They probably shouldn't play a 3-2 zone and leave people open from 3 all over the place. We weren't even great at hitting 3's, but it was good enough. Their press was also ineffective. I'd probably have tried something different.
Reporter: What does it mean to win the Game of the Century coach?
Tovarich: Somehow I don't think beating unranked Western Michigan is as big of a deal as beating Arizona.
Reporter: Do you think the committee might forget about you since you only play 2 games between now and selection Sunday?
Tovarich: You'd hope they're keeping track. We'll finish up that Southern Utah game on Saturday, and then we go home with 29 days left until then and just one game to play. Luckily the RPI is a percentage and it still remembers us even when we play one game while most people will play about 6.
Reporter: How do you assess the team's rebounding relative to last year?
Tovarich: Eh, we've some decent numbers comparatively. We don't have as many of those games where we're -15. The schedule's also a bit easier. We usually make up for it with aggression getting to the line, though we were down 10-7 at the line until they had to foul us and we got 7 more FT's in the last 30 seconds. We were a pedestrian +4 in turnovers. Today was a pretty clean game by both teams. Usually that's more of an advantage when the other team is a little sloppy with the ball. So, it's been easier because of the schedule, but turnovers and FT's we're often making up for it and it's easier to make up -7 than all the times last year it was in the double digits.Comment

Tovarich: College teams had become too easy, so we thought we'd try a half against the Utah Jazz and see how we did.
Reporter: What happened at halftime?
Tovarich: The private jet from Salt Lake arrived. Worst half of basketball I've ever experienced by far. Our 8-point lead lasted about 90 seconds out of the half. They went 19/28 and we went 10/32. I'm surprised we didn't lose by more. They killed us on the boards. They beat us at the FT line. We couldn't do anything right in the seconf half.
Reporter: So that 3-2 zone you said not to play?
Tovarich: We shot poorly from 3 but that wasn't why we lost. I would normally say we devolved into jacking 3's all the second half, but look at the guys in the paint too. Atkinson's never had a game like that in his career. Wilkins was so-so. 11/25 by the big guys, all of which are in the paint is not something we've experienced before. They were helpless. We were only +2 in turnovers. We'd probably have lost it if it was +12.
Reporter: Is it good or bad you don't play a game for 11 days now?
Tovarich: I'm not sure. This is mainly for recruiting. But maybe they can call go sit in an igloo somewhere and clear their heads.
Reporter: Was the pressure of being #1 in the mid-major poll a factor?
Tovarich: Every time we're 2nd and 1st loses, they leapfrog 3 over us anyway, so it kinda feels like no matter what you do, that was somehow never going to happen.
Reporter: How bad is this for your tournament hopes?
Tovarich: We wouldn't have expected to beat Arizona or DePaul, so we're one win better than anyone could reasonably have expected. We'll wait and see if Joey Brackets puts us in. We have only one game in 29 days until Selection Sunday. All we can do now is go home and wait for the sun to come out finally and try to beat Loyola again.Comment

Tovarich: We came out with the fight and intensity you'd hope to have. We ended that one early. At 35-10, I think that was pretty well over. We got a bit lazy the rest of the half. I didn't love a lot of the second half either.
Reporter: Were you worried with the different lineup with all the SR's in?
Tovarich: A little. You never know how the people who are normally starting will react. You never know how they'll all play together. You assume your team unity gets better, but yes, I was ready to pull the plug quickly if needed. And it wasn't. We were up 15-4 pretty quick, so I gave them all a few extra minutes there.
Reporter: Do you think these refs have ever heard of fouls?
Tovarich: They must have had somewhere to be. Perhaps they saw it was the last home game of the season and they didn't have to stay in Alaska anymore and wanted to get out as fast as they could.
Reporter: You seemed like you were really trying to get Peavy a 3 at the end?
Tovarich: He was 0-9 coming in. I know he wasn't great from out there, but he was 4-19 last year, so you think he should be able to make one. I guess not.
Reporter: How sure are you this is a tournament team?
Tovarich: Lunardi has us as a 10 seed. So, a loss might have put that in question. As long as there aren't a crazy number of bid stealers, we ought to be safely in.
Reporter: Recruiting is about to wrap up. How do you feel about who you can get to sign?
Tovarich: I was pretty sure about two of our four recruits. UTEP came out of nowhere trying to take our center, so that's not as sure now. We have a couple guards I think we're good on, a PG and SG. The last scholarship was for another SG. It's up to Boise State if they want him since they're his top choice. I'm anticipating some other scholarships opening though. I think Borders, Marsh and Wagner are 100% gone. Scalzo probably. Herman is getting unhappy but I'll be surprised if he bails. I'd be fine if he did. It'd be better for both of us.Comment
