Tovarich: That felt like the NC A&T game all over again. We missed every tying 3. We made almost every 2 while down 3. I tried to break the neverending pattern by getting the press on after a basket. So we miss 7 shots in a row all of a sudden. Can't allow 70% shooting. Can't allow 60% shooting on 3's. We were -5 on the boards. I can work with that. We've had a lot worse. But only +4 in turnovers. That needs to be higher to overcome all those other things.

Reporter: What did you think of Peavy fouling out with 5 reach-ins?

Tovarich: First time this year anyone's fouled out. He's barely standing near anyone trying to swipe at these passes. It's almost like the refs were determined to foul him out.

Reporter: How do you sum up the achievements of the season?

Tovarich: Way better than anything I could have dreamed up. I thought we'd be lucky to go .500. We're still young too.

Reporter: What will you change with the schedule next year?

Tovarich: We'll see what the AD hands me. I can change a lot, but I can't schedule the other Independents and I can't schedule after February 15th, so I need to him do some of those things and I can try to frontload the schedule a little less, because I think we'll have 4 scholarships next year and I need time to do something with them. Obviously this one was enough to get us in the top 50 of the RPI but we didn't sniff the NCAA tournament with 23 wins, so it'll have to get a little harder, but we don't get anywhere going 16-16 either.

          1) 3.5 hour flight to Seattle
          2) 1 hour layover
          3) 4 hour flight to Nashville
          4) 1 hour bus ride to Bowling Green

Good luck with the flights coach Tovarich.
Assuming every game tips off at 7PM local, and a 5-hour time difference, that left us probably 41 hours to get out there once the game ended. So if Alaska Airlines was nice enough to have a redeye, we may have gotten there at a decent hour the next day.

Re: University of Alaska-Anchorage Basketball (CH2K8)

Tovarich: The AD says I have to do a press conference. The hockey team must be off today.

Reporter: Take us through the schedule coach.

Tovarich: I thought last year was front-loaded. Oof. The AD hands me a schedule with one game after February 14th, so I didn't have much to work with. It's a firable offense if you ask me. We upped our power schools on the road from 3 to 4. Three of them are in the top 15 or so. They'll hopefully build up our SOS. I reduced the mid-major games by one I think. We did pretty poorly in those, so those didn't help us. All the power games are mostly later. Hopefully we'll ease our way in with 3 freshman starting and build up some confidence and don't have an early 4-game losing streak like last year. I think we dropped our home games down from 12 to 11. The AD handed us a lot of home and homes with our other Independents. I just wish they were later.

Reporter: Who are your new assistants coach and why did you get rid of the old ones?

Tovarich: I wonder if there's any state out of the 50 I can go to where I don't get asked about assistants. These ones are better, albeit only very marginally. I'm still not sure which one got cloned last year or I had the clone or the original. I still have nightmares about it a year later. It's why I didn't participate in the scrimmage this year.

Reporter: Do you expect some of last year's starters to be unhappy?

Tovarich: Yeah, on paper, the freshman are all better. I still like Spears and Murry as the 3-point shooters. They're better than the new guys, so Murry still starts, but I'm going to be moving him to SG sometimes when someone needs a rest. Spears I expect still to get more minutes than I typically would give the bench. The way the roster breaks down this year, I don't have an A team and a B team. So there won't be hockey subs this year. I'll have to actually put some thought into it occasionally.

Reporter: Do you expect anyone to transfer over playing time?

Tovarich: Marsh and Wagner may never see the court. I'd advise them to transfer if they'd like to play. There's already no room for them and the talent level should only improve next year.

Reporter: What's the priority in recruiting?

Tovarich: Point guard, point guard, point guard. Scalzo is all we have back there. I'd love another 3-point shooter regardless of position and another C. I tried for one last year and couldn't grab one.

That's a good recruiting class for year 1.

I also really like that assistant coach data, thanks for sharing.

That's a tough hand to be dealt. Are you going to try to make Dec and Jan really heavy and have more recruiting hours before the early window?

The schedule is a couple posts up. I didn't really lighten November much, mainly because I am in exactly zero danger of signing anyone in-season anyway and I haven't built my recruiting skills up much yet. They should be higher but I'm in the open legacy instead of the career one and it only gave me 2 increases when I should have had 6. But based on the first recruiting season, I am 100% dependent on finding people no one offers. I couldn't even get a C from Texas because he chose Texas-Pan American over me. So it's all the long game until the end of the season and hope no one else offers. I went into the offseason not being anyone's first choice. Between the distance, and my lack of recruiting skills, I just hope everyone else overlooks someone decent.

Interesting created school glitch-I had no white jerseys the first season. They were all green at home or yellow on the road. Now, first game of season 2, I can only choose white or black jerseys. The returning players are all wearing green like last year, and my FR are wearing white.

Tovarich: I really hope that was just a bad game. That's the second worst team on our schedule. We're in big trouble if that's what a normal game looks like.

Reporter: Why do you think so many people struggled?

Tovarich: Hopefully it's just first game of the year stuff. I'm more worried that everyone's in new roles except for Atkinson. Murry's shooting was dreadful. I hope he can't shoot as a SG, but not as a PG, though when we moved him he still bricked everything. I hope Spears couldn't shoot as a starter, but can't coming off the bench.

Reporter: So what got you through the game?

Tovarich: Shockingly, it was rebounding. That might be Atkinson's second best game rebounding ever. I hope that's an indication of some improvement. Wilkins rebounded well. We were a modest +5 in turnovers. That's a little below average for us, but probably 7 or so more rebounds that I expect is a big win. So, hopefully we shoot better and continue to do the things that got us through it, and maybe this was just an anomaly.

Reporter: How do you think this team will ultimately compare to last year's?

Tovarich: Totally different skill set. Last year Murry and Spears were big 3-point threats. There's a lot less of a threat of that now, not that you'd know it from today. That's a work in progress to figure out. Maybe rebounding was a fluke. Hopefully the awful shooting was a fluke. It's going to be quite different.

Reporter: Speaking of different, was it as confusing for you to see your team wearing two different color jerseys as it was for us?

Tovarich: Yeah, we're all thrown off by that. We almost got a 5-second call once because we seemed to forget we were the ones inbounding the ball. I wish I could explain it.

Tovarich: Crazy game. Thought we were done down 10 with 3 minutes to go. Totally opposite of the last game. Rebounding was straight up pitiful. We shot well, unlike the first game. And luckily we did, because their 3-point shooting was insane. I guess we owe them a thank for you for the missed FT's. Without missing 3 of the 4 in the last 20 seconds, we're not in the position for Murry to hit the tying 3 with 5 seconds to go and then I'm surprised they had time to make 3 passes and get a 6 foot shot along the baseline that thankfully they missed somehow. There really shouldn't be time for that, but somehow there was.

Reporter: Why are Herman and Luz not really a part of the offense?

Tovarich: I started with these first three games against fairly weak competition so we could start 3-0 and ease our way into things and learn what the new guys can do and how all the pieces fit together and we're locked in two tight games where we spend most of the game trailing and frantically trying to fight our way back, so for that situation, we go to what we know already. That's why Spears got more minutes than the starters. I would say hopefully we've worked some kinks out and we'll come back better against Grand Canyon, but I don't even know what we need to work out yet. We went from a top 5 rebounding performance by last year's standards to -23, which might be our worst ever, and that was against Fullerton, which isn't exactly encouraging. We went from pitiful shooting to really good shooting. I'd love to give the new guys more chances, and next up we have our worst opponent of the season, so if we can't do a little more experimenting there, then the best idea might be to just start the people I started last year. There's no non-conference season to use to get yourself ready for conference season, which is just to get ready for a conference tournament, which when you're a school of our size would be the only decider of your postseason fate. Every game's equal for us, so there's no time to go on a losing streak and learn some things and grow from it to make you better later, or it's already too late to make a difference when later finally arrives.

Reporter: Were you surprised they didn't foul you right away when you got the defensive rebound with 39 seconds to go in OT?

Tovarich: I suspect Fullerton coach was so shocked they didn't get the offensive board and we actually got it that he was confused at what was going on. But yet. We had that exact scenario somewhere last year, so we waited until 1 second to go on the shot clock and took a 3 and you figure that'll eat up most of the remaining 4 seconds, but Spears hit it and ended the game.

Tovarich: We made the scoreline look flattering there those last 5 minutes, but up until then, I'm not sure if I was watching a horror or a comedy. I cringed and laughed, sometimes in the same possession and whichever it was, I wanted to look away and hope I wake up from the nightmare. It was easily the lowest quality basketball I've watched two teams play in my time here.

Reporter: Is it a case of playing down to the opponents each game?

Tovarich: We're hardly good enough to be doing that. Despite them being tied for the worst team in America, that's hopefully not the answer. That's a luxury we definitely haven't earned.

Reporter: Was this a breakout game for Luz?

Tovarich: It was an improvement. I think 8 of his points came there in that barrage at the end, so it wasn't much before that, but we were stuck in a tight game for 23 minutes, so I went to the well once again.

Reporter: How much of a leash does Herman have?

Tovarich: We'll see. Only 4 shots taken this year, that's undoubtedly not helping, but he's often the one I yank first to get Spears in to try and shoot some adrenaline into the lineup. I wish I had more chances to experiment on offense against these 3 opponents but we didn't play well enough to earn that right.

Reporter: Is -2 in rebounds an improvement after the last game or still bad because of the opponent?

                              Tovarich: Yep, still bad.

Reporter: Other than Spears, the bench wasn't very productive tonight. How do you feel about their capabilities?

Tovarich: It was a setback for them tonight for sure. But the bad basketball was contagious. It's still not enough of a sample size to determine what the norm is and what was just a good or a bad night. I don't have the lineup quite structured for an A and a B team so everyone's going to be on the court with a different mix every time. Team unity is not something we're going to achieve much of this season.

Tovarich: Considering how close our first three games were, it was nice to have them at arm's length the entire second half and a somewhat comfortable lead.

Reporter: Is this a breakout game for Wilkins?

Tovarich: He did a great job against the press. What he did better was get down the court in transition when we got a steal, and he got a few lay-ins when they stopped the guard and he beat everyone else down the court and got behind the defense. Those situations aren't likely to come together like that for him to score so much, but he did a good job taking advantage of his speed advantage over whoever was guarding him. For all the things I love about Atkinson, his slow rumble down the court isn't one of them, so that's a nice trait to have on the roster somewhere.

Reporter: Did you think the defense had anything to do with their poor shooting?

Tovarich: As usual, no. They just missed. We missed a lot too. We both went to halftime 1/7 on 3's and fairly poor shooting in the paint. We did a better job in the second half for the most part.

Reporter: Are some people's confidence low about their playing situation?

Tovarich: Yeah, I knew that would be a problem this year. No one who starts one year reacts well to not starting the next. But the talent level is improving.

Reporter: What can you do to get Herman involved on offense?

Tovarich: He's obviously poor at shooting the 3's so far. I'm not a big fan of mid-range jumpers that only count for 2, but I'm willing to give him a crack at a few to see if that's where his talent lies. Otherwise, I'm better off starting Spears and getting some production from the SG position. 3's are preferable for our style of play, and despite his big size for his position and his supposed superior talent at other aspects of the game, Spears appears to be more productive, even when having a poor game like this.

Reporter: What will it take to beat a big opponent like Texas A&M?

Tovarich: We haven't managed to put everything together in one game yet. We've either been pitiful at rebounding or pitiful at defense or pitiful at shooting. Sometimes we're good at 2/3 of those things. We'll need to put it all together for once to have a chance.
