    Free Agent News:

Raiders outbid the Ravens for the services of RG Jeb Terry. Terry agrees to a 1yr deal worth $1.3M, no bonus (I had $5.6M in the Free Agent bank, so I'm down to $4.3M now)

    Preseason Week 1

    @

The Raiders look sluggish in this one as the Dolphins roll over them for a 23-7 victory.

Free Agent News: The Raiders try to get OLB Vernon Gholston, but he gets bid out of their range pretty quickly. In the end Gholston ends up signing with their division rival, the Kansas City Chiefs 1yr deal for $5.8M and a $1M bonus

    Preseason Week 2

    @

The Raiders bounce back and handle the Redskins easily in this one. Raiders 21 Redskins 3.

    Preseason Week 3

    @

A defensive battle in this one, but the Raiders come out on top. Raiders 10 Steelers 3.

    Preseason Week 4

    @

Coach Joslin plays his starters sparingly in this one, but it is enough to beat the hapless Lions. Raiders 7 Lions 0

The Raiders finish the preseason with a 3-1 record.

Free Agent News: The Raiders go on a free agent spree at the end of free agency. (I waited for these guys to come up for auction, but it never happened, and I couldn't even force an auction by picking them up and dropping them back into the free agent market, so they got the standard 1yr deals)

MLB Bobby Carpenter 1yr $900K (out of football in 2008, last played for the Cowboys in 2007)

DE Kabeer Gbaja Biamila 1yr $900K (played in all 16 games for Green Bay last year, satrting 2, 20 tackles, 2 TFL, Sack)

HB Chris Johnson 1yr $900K (cut by Green Bay after posting 15 carries for 51yds in 12 games played)

WR Bryant Johnson 1yr $600K (cut by Seattle, in 2008 he had only 3 catches for 44yds)

CB Demario Minter 1yr $900K (out of football in 2008, last played for Cleveland in 2007)

(For a total of $4.2M spent leaving $100K in the Free Agent bank)

It definitely was timely...I would of cut DT Gerard Warren so I could sign the rookies, but I would of missed out on the Free Agents I got and lost out on my over priced DT.

                  A couple of gameplay tweaks:

I must call every play in my defensive playbook at least once in every game.

I want to create a little more variety in my offensive playcalling, so I'm keeping the playcall % below 10%. I think this will prevent me from falling back on my "old reliable" plays when I find myself in a tight spot. Also, I think it is more realistic.

The Offensive Playbook is around 80 plays the Defensive Playbook is only like 17 plays, but I'm going to bulk it up a little with stolen plays.

NFL Roster Update: New Offensive Starters 2009

                        QB

Free Agent QB Kyle Boller beats out incumbent Rex Grossman and last year's #1 draft pick Joe Flacco for the starting job.

former KC Chief QB Brodie Croyle beats out Brian Griese and rookie Drew Trumblee for the starting job.

QB Matt Leinart finally gets his shot in Arizona.

After letting Brodie Croyle go, the Chiefs brought in long time Jet QB Chad Pennington as a free agent. Pennington is notoriously fragile though, so the reality is QB Damon Huard is going to see lots of action.

The Matt Ryan era has begun in Atlanta

San Francisco grabbed veteran QB Kerry Collins in free agent to be their starter.

Baltimore HC Gary Hammermill traded up to grab QB Luke Rambis and there was no question that Rambis would be the opening day starter for the Ravens.

                        HB

Somehow HB Ladell Betts is starting ahead of the more talented rookie HB Maceo Sweetney. Crazy!

The Lions grabbed Raider castoff HB Kevin Faulk to be their starter and 2nd year HB Jonathon Stewart to be their solution at HB down the road.

The Ravens grabbed aging HB Warrick Dunn in free agency to be their starter, he is backed up by Steve Slaton and at HB3 Willis McGahee

Unwilling to turn the running game over to 2nd year pro Jamaal Charles, the Seahawks grabbed free agent HB Fred Taylor to be their starter

HB Rashard Mendenhall beats out incumbent HB Travis Henry for the starting job. Rookie Kendrick House is arguably better than either Mendenhall or Henry, but the Texans are bringing him along slowly, so he will see very limited action at HB3

The Titans say goodbye to HB LenDale White and give last years free agent acquisition HB Kevin Jones (formerly of the Lions) the starting job. The Titans also grabbed HB Darren Sproles in Free Agency to help out in the run and return game.

                        WR

The Bears grabbed WR Donnie Avery to be their #1 guy after the Bills unceremoniously cut him after 1 season.

Rookie WR Tyrus Duhon starts alongside incumbent WR Lee Evans.

2nd year player WR Limas Sweed takes over the #1 spot

The Chiefs bring in the very slow Ike Hilliard to start opposite Dwayne Bowe, at least it is an improvement over Bam Childress.

The Ravens continue their offensive renovation by bringing in Free Agent WR Isaac Bruce to be their #1 guy.

NFL Roster Update: New Defensive Starters 2009

                          DE

Rookie LE Perry Lacy starts opposite incumbent RE Justin Smith

Free agent RE Turk McBride beats out Tony Bake for the starting job

The Browns drafted LE LaMaar Marbury to start at LE and picked up veteran RE Betrand Berry in free agency to start at RE

The Dolphins have the oldest starting DEs with incumbent Jason Taylor at RE and free agent LE Michael Strahan, both of who are 35 years old.

former Raider Pro Bowl DE Chike Okeafor gets the staring LE job in the Big Apple

The Jaguars have a new DE duo in free agent RE Jarvis Green and rookie LE Jay Sullivan

The Jets drafted their long term starter at RE in Andre Dalembert

The Panthers grabbed RE Buddy Jackson in Free Agency to be their starting RE

Last year the Redskins installed rookie Calais Campbell at RE, this year they hope rookie Clay Gill can do as well at LE
