Re: Boston Red Sox (MVP 2005)

I updated the prospect rankings. 1-7 are the same. Meredith, Pauley and Moss dropped out, replaced by Adam Stern, Juan Perez and Kason Gabbard.

I'm also planning on creating the Red Sox 2 first round draft picks, Jacoby Ellsbury and Craig Hansen, but won't do so until mid June(in game) for realisms sake. I am also trying to put together or find some CAPs before I do so, since I tend to overrate players based on homer scouting reports. I'm thinking Ellsbury will start in Wilmington (A) and Hansen will start in either Pawtucket (AAA) or Portland (AA) as a possible September callup. This might not be the most realistic but it makes it more fun for me.

Here is the updated prospect list with links to their player pages:

    1. Hanley Ramirez - SS (AA)
    2. Jon Papelbon - SP (AA)
    3. Dustin Pedroia - 2B (AA)
    4. Jon Lester - SP (AA)
    5. Abe Alvarez - SP (AAA)
    6. Kelly Shoppach - C (AAA)
    7. Jeremy West - 1B (AA)
    8. Adam Stern - OF (AAA)
    9. Juan Perez - RP (AA)
    10. Kason Gabbard - SP (AA)

EDIT - One more note, mvpsavreader crashes when I try to export any players from Wilmington which is why you don't see any Single-A prospects on this list.

David Wells combined with Tim Wakefield for the shutout

BOSTON - Red Sox pitchers David Wells and Tim Wakefield combined to shutout the Seattle Mariners at Fenway Park, limiting them to 5 hits.

Seattle threatened in the 4th, getting runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs, but Wells was able to work out of the jam, retiring 3 straight batters and stranding the runners. The Mariners stranded 7 baserunners over the course of the game.

The Red Sox offense all came in the 2nd thanks to an error by Seattle 2B, Brett Boone. The Red Sox loaded the bases with 2 outs and Boone misplayed a Mark Bellhorn grounder, allowing 2 runs to score. The next batter, Johnny Damon, hit Moyer's first pitch into the visitors bullpen for a 3-run homerun and a 5-0 Red Sox lead.

Red Sox starter David Wells went 7 2/3rds strong innings, allowing 4 hits and 2 walks, while striking out 9. He earned his 5th win of the season, becoming the 3rd Boston starter to do so. Matt Clement is also 5-1, while Curt Schilling leads the AL in wins, at 6-0.

Johnny Damon scored 3 runs for the Red Sox

TORONTO - The Boston Red Sox won their 5th straight and continued their torrid hitting in beating the Toronto Blue Jays 9-4.

Boston is on pace to score over 1,000 runs and break the AL record for most runs scored in a season, held by the New York Yankees who scored 1,067 in 1931.

The Red Sox got a hit from every starter except Kevin Millar, in scoring 9 runs on 19 hits. The bulk came in the 5th inning, in which the Red Sox batted around, scoring 6 runs on 5 hits, 2 walks and an error.

Boston starter, Wade Miller allowed 4 runs over 5 1/3rd but was forced to leave the game after being struck by a Vernon Wells line drive. He was helped off the field by teammates. X-Rays after the game revealed a fracture and Red Sox team doctors predict Miller could miss 4-6 weeks. Miller was placed on the 15-day DL and replaced by Jeremi Gonzalez, who was recalled from AAA Pawtucket.

The Red Sox improved to 33-12 overall and have opened up a 9 game lead in the AL East. Many expected Boston to slump early due to their 2004 World Series victory, but this team has been far from complacent. They lead the AL in nearly every major hitting category, led by slugger David Ortiz who leads the AL in homeruns and RBI.

Angels Overcome Red Sox in Extra Innings

            WP: S. Shields (2-2) LP: M. Mantei (1-2)

BOSTON - The Boston Red Sox late game heroics were not enough to defeat the Anaheim Angels. The Red Sox came back in three consecutive innings to continue the game, but couldn't get the key hits to earn a win.

Varitek's 9th inning homerun wasn't enough for the Red Sox

Angels outfelder, Garret Anderson, powered their attack, finishing the game 4 for 6 with 2 HR's and 4 RBI's. He put the Angels ahead in the 8th with a 3-run HR off Red Sox reliever Mike Timlin. The Angels added an insurance run in the 9th when a Chone Figgins RBI double put them ahead 5-2.

However, the Red Sox weren't going down that easily. David Ortiz and Kevin Millar singled off Anaheim closer, Francisco Rodriguez in the 9th, bringing pinch hitter Jason Varitek to the plate as the tieing run. The Red Sox captain launched a Rodriguez fastball into the visitors bullpen to tie the game and set off a wild extra innings affair.

The Angels scored in the top of the 10th on a Dallas McPherson sacrifice fly, but the Red Sox came back again. Johnny Damon led off the inning with a single, then moved to 3rd when Edgar Renteria executed a perfect hit and run, singling through the right side. With Anaheim's infield pulled in, the speedy Damon beat the throw to the plate on a Manny Ramirez ground out to 2nd.

There was more drama in the 11th when the Angels again took a 1-run lead on a Vladimir Guerrero triple into the CF triangle. Varitek led off with a single and reached 3rd after a HBP and throwing error on a pickoff attempt. Mark Bellhorn hit a chopper to first and Varitek scored the tieing run on another close play at the plate.

This would be the Red Sox last comeback, however. The Angels scored the winning run on a Juan Rivera HR off Matt Mantei in the 12th. Scott Shields was able to retire the Red Sox in order to earn the victory. The teams combined for 15 runs, 33 hits and the game lasted 4 1/2 hours.

                Knuckleballer Zink Prospering in Pawtucket
                6/5/2005

PAWTUCKET, RI - Charlie Zink has been the biggest surprise of the Red Sox minor league system so far this year. The Red Sox signed Zink in 2002 as an undrafted free agent and converted him to a knuckleballer when a minor league coach saw him toying around with the pitch in practice. Since then Zink has made an unlikely rise through the Red Sox farm system.

                Charlie Zink

After working on the knuckleball with Boston starter Tim Wakefield in spring training, Zink was assigned to AA Portland as the 5th starter. However, he only pitched 1 game for the Sea Dogs, before being called up to fill in for injured Pawtucket starter, Chris Narveson. Eleven starts later Zink is still in Pawtucket and has become one of their most reliable pitchers. Over his 11 starts Zink is 7-1 with a 2.68 ERA. His 7 wins tie him for the International League lead.

Despite his success, Zink is still not recognized as one of the top Red Sox prospects. His mentor Tim Wakefield, who Zink extensively studies, sees it differently. "I don't see any reason why he can't be a contributor to this team within the next few years," said Wakefield. "He has the ability and desire to succeed."

General Manager Theo Epstein sees him as a possible successor to Wakefield. "We love his versatility," said Epstein. "His makeup allows him to start, come out of the bullpen and pitch on very little rest. If he continues to be consistent and have confidence in his knuckleball he might earn the chance to be another Tim Wakefield."

Yah, Tejada has a pretty low average. Their current #'s:

                      Renteria - .341, 8 HR, 32 RBI, 6 SB
                      Tejada - .264, 10 HR, 39 RBI, 3 SB

Renteria is 3rd in the AL in average and tied for 2nd in runs scored. For some reason my team has just been hitting the crap out of the ball in games I manage, especially Renteria and Varitek.

If anybody has been keeping up with these, please post comments. What would you like to see more of? less of? What could I do to improve the layout, front page content, etc?

I plan on keeping this going through several seasons in game so I'd like to keep you guys interested.

                        Some comments on future plans:
                        - Updated All-Star Balloting. I'll add the NL leaders soon.
                        - I'll be doing a rumor central at the start of July. I'll probably update it once a week, so about 4 times, until the trade deadline.
                        - More prospect profiles like the one I did on Zink. If you guys have some prospects you're interested for teams other than the Red Sox, let me know and I can post their stats as well.

CHICAGO - Ace Curt Schilling pitched 7 strong innings in helping to break a 6 game losing streak for the Red Sox. They evened the series with the Chicago Cubs, 3-1.

Curt Schilling allowed only 1 run in 7 innings

Schilling shut down the Cubs offense, allowing 8 hits, but getting the key outs when needed. He struck out 9, while only walking 1.

The 3 Boston runs came early. In the 2nd Mark Bellhorn hit an opposite field double, scoring Jason Varitek. 2 more runs were added in the 3rd when David Ortiz his a 2-run opposite field, homerun against Cubs starter, Carlos Zambrano.

Chicago's lone run came in the 4th when former Red Sox 2B, Todd Walker, hit and RBI triple into deep RF. They threatened again in the 9th but Red Sox closer Keith Foulke was able to retire Aramis Ramirez, who grounded out with the tieing run on first.

The Red Sox, who lost the first game of the series 9-7, had lost 6 straight, dropping them to 40-21. Despite the recent slump, they still hold a 7 game lead in the AL East of the New York Yankees.
