BOSTON - The Red Sox defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-0 on the strength of a combined shutout by pitchers David Wells and Matt Mantei.

Bill Mueller rounds the bases after his 7th inning homerun

Wells went 8 innings, allowing 9 hits and struck out 11. He ran into trouble several times in the game, including a bases loaded jam in the 5th, but was able to work his way out of it and maintain the shutout. Reliever Matt Mantei completed the shutout, striking out the side in the 9th.

The Red Sox took the lead early, on a Manny Ramirez RBI single in the first. They scored again in the second on a Johnny Damon infield single, with runners on 2nd and 3rd. The 2-0 lead held until the 7th inning when Jay Payton led off against starter Sean Burnett with a triple into the center field triangle. Joe Roa relieved Burnett, only to allow a 2-run homerun to Bill Mueller on a first pitch hanging curveball.

The Red Sox, who still have a comfortable lead in the AL East, were in need of a win to salvage what has been an abysmal June. Coming into the game, Boston was 3-11 in June and had lost 10 of their last 12. The slump has been a surprise for the team who dominated the league over the first 2 months.

Ya they are. I had the best record in baseball for awhile but every game I've managed in June, we lose. I don't know what the hell is going on. My team still has great stats but we're 3-11 in June.

PHILADELPHIA - The Boston Red Sox came back to defeat the Philadelphia Phillies, and closer Billy Wagner, in extra innings.

Johnny Damon is greeted by Edgar Renteria after his game tieing homerun

CF Johnny Damon hit a first pitch fastball into the stands to tie the game in the top of the 9th, sending it into extra innings. The Red Sox scored again when pinch hitter Doug Mirabelli, the last man on Boston's bench, singled to score Bill Mueller. Closer Keith Foulke retired all 3 batters he faced to earn his 18th save.

The Phillies jumped out to a 5-2 lead after 5 innings off Red Sox starter Matt Clement. Michael Barrett and Jason Michaels hit a pair of 2-run homeruns. Boston, however was able to chip away at the lead.

They scored 1 in the 6th on a Bill Mueller RBI single and another in the 7th on a Manny Ramirez RBI double. This set the stage for Damon's blast to tie the game. It was Wagner's 4th blown save in 19 opportunities.

Red Sox starter Clement left after 5 innings, having allowed the 5 Philadelphia runs. The Red Sox bullpen, however, shut down the Phillies the rest of the way, tossing 5 shutout innings. Mike Timlin, who only faced 1 batter, earned his first win of the season.

Red Sox DH/1B David Ortiz was injured in the 4th, diving for a line drive. He was replaced by Kevin Millar and is listed as day-to-day.

This is the only red sox 'chise i've been able to read, because I know you're a true red sox fan and have kept the team together. Most threads I read people are trading away key guys and I just get baffled when they do.

Yah I noticed that too. A lot of them I'll look at the rosters and they'll have Beltran, Ichiro, Peavey, etc. Just a bunch of players they would have not realistic shot of getting. I'll def. make moves as I go on, but not stuff that couldn't happen in real life.

I'm going to shake things up after the all-star game. here are some moves I'm considering so let me know what you think:

                    - Halama and Myers have struggled so I'll probably call up Abe Alvarez to give him a shot in MLB as a reliever.
                    - Lester, Papelbon, Hanley, Pedroia and Moss will probably all get promoted to AAA. Either Hanley or Pedroia will get called to MLB to replace Vazquez towards the end of the minor league season.
                    - I'm in the market for a starter at the deadline to replace Wade Miller. Schill, Clement and Wells have been nasty but Miller, Wake and Arroyo have struggled. Wake is currently in the bullpen.

BALTIMORE - Bruce Chen went 7 strong innings in helping the Baltimore Orioles defeat the Boston Red Sox, 4-2 at home.

Miguel Tejada hit the game winning homerun in the 8th inning

Chen allowed 9 hits but got the key outs when needed. The Red Sox scored first, in the second, on a Jay Payton sacrifice fly. They threatened again in the 5th. Chen allowed a single and 2 walks to load the bases with no outs. After a Johnny Damon sacrifice fly, Chen escaped from the jam, getting Edgar Renteria to ground into a double play.

The Orioles tied the game in the 6th, getting 2 runs off Red Sox starter Bronson Arroyo. 2B Mark Bellhorn had a chance for an inning ending double play, but bobbled the exchange, allowing a run to score. Another run scored on a Melvin Mora single later in the inning.

Miguel Tejada was the hero for Baltimore, putting them in the lead with an 8th inning 2-run homerun off Mike Timlin. Orioles closer B.J. Ryan pitched a scoreless 9th to earn his 20th save.

Red Sox manager Terry Francona was ejected in the 8th for arguing balls and strikes. Timlin appeared to have a strikeout on a fastball to Miguel Tejada, but the umpire didn't ring him up. On the next pitch, Tejada hit his game winning blast, which prompted Francona to come out of the dugout. When asked what was said during the argument, Francona replied, "I told him to flip over the plate and read the directions."

                            Note on my Dynasty:

I created some of the Red Sox 1st round picks but screwed them up. I created and signed Hansen, Ellsbury and Buchholz before I realized how good the CAPS I was using were making them. I have since toned them down to more realistic ratings but am still stuck with their terrible contracts.

Oh well. At least the Red Sox payroll supports them.
