DETROIT - The American League continued their dominance of the All-Star game with a 2-1 victory thanks to the help of some playoff contendors.
AL rivals, Boston and New York, played a big part in the close victory. Yankees Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez had both RBI's for the AL, while Red Sox Johnny Damon and David Ortiz scored both runs.
Both teams had chances to score but left runners on in key situations. AL starter Curt Schilling struck out 2 with the bases loaded in the 2nd. The NL squandered another chance in the 7th when Jeff Kent was gunned down at the plate by Ichiro. The AL also failed to capitalize on their chances, hitting into bases loaded double plays in the 6th and 7th.
The score was tied 1-1 in the bottom of the 9th with the meat of the AL order facing Mets pitcher Armando Benitez. Manny Ramirez led off with a single and was followed by teammate David Ortiz, who also singled. This brought up Alex Rodriguez, who muscled an 0-2 pitch into rightfield for a single, bringing Ramirez home with the winning run.
Red Sox closer Keith Foulke pitched a scoreless 9th for the win, while Benitez recorded the loss. Alex Rodriguez was voted All-Star MVP, the first of his career.

BOSTON - The Boston Red Sox completed a comeback victory with a walk-off homerun by Bill Mueller in the 10th off Yankees closer Mariano River.

This was not the first dramatic moment for Mueller against the Yankee closer. Last July Mueller hit a walk-off homerun to help the Red Sox win a wild game, which included the memorable fight between Jason Varitek and Alex Rodriguez. That game was credited by many as the game that turned around the Red Sox season en route to their first championship in 86 years. Red Sox faithful hope this victory will have the same effect on a team that has slumped through much of June and July.
The Yankees built a 4-1 lead off Red Sox starter Curt Schilling. It could've been more, but newly acquired right fielder Gabe Kapler robbed Tino Martinez of a homerun in the 2nd. Schilling pitched 6.2 innings, allowing the 4 Yankee runs and striking out 11.
The Red Sox narrowed the lead in the 7th when Mueller hit a 2-run double into the triangle, knocking Yankee starter Randy Johnson from the game. Johnson went 6.2 innings, allowing 3 runs and striking out 5.
The game remained 4-3 until the bottom of the 9th when Jason Varitek hit a solo homerun against Mariano Rivera to tie the game. Keith Foulke pitched a scoreless 10th, setting the stage for Mueller's game winning homerun, a line shot that barely cleared the wall before landing in the visitors' bullpen.
The Red Sox lineup contained two new faces in right fielder Gabe Kapler and Jerry Hairston Jr. Kapler returned from Japan, where he struggled for much of the year. Hairston Jr. was acquired from the Chicago Cubs for outfielder Jay Payton and minor league catcher Kelly Shoppach.

BOSTON - Newly acquired pitcher A.J. Burnett, pitched a superb game in winning his first game as a memeber of the Red Sox. Burnett was acquired Sunday before the 4pm trading deadline. He was part of a deal that also brought Jeff Conine to Boston and sent Kevin Millar and Wade Miller to Florida.

Burnett, who has been hurt by poor run support this season, didn't get much help from the Red Sox bats, but was still good enough to win. He pitched 7 innings, allowing 5 hits, 2 runs and 2 walks while striking out 6.
Kansas City could have had more in the 6th when Mike Sweeney was thrown out at the plate on a Matt Stairs RBI double. Manny Ramirez fielded the ball in the left field corner quickly, but it still took a perfect relay throw from Edgar Renteria to get Sweeney at the plate.
The Red Sox scored in the bottom of the inning, with Johnny Damon scoring from 3rd on a Ramirez infield single. Ramirez hit a slow roller deep in the hole at shortstop. Neifi Perez fielded it cleanly but his throw pulled Sweeney off the bag, although Ramirez might have beaten it anyways.
Boston struck again in the 7th. Trot Nixon led off with a single and was followed by a Jason Varitek line drive homerun into the Red Sox bullpen. Varitek fouled off several pitches during the at-bat, but eventually got the pitch he was looking for.
Mike Timlin pitched a scoreless 8th while closer Keith Foulke pitched the 9th, striking out 2 in recording his 26th save of the season.
Notes: Red Sox 3B Bill Mueller left the game in the 7th after injuring his hand sliding into 2B....A.J. Burnett signed a 4 year $32 million contract extension with the Red Sox. He was slated to be a free agent after this year.

Added a link for the Awards Leaders to the main page. Todd Helton has a legitimate shot at the triple crown. He leads the NL in BA, HR and RBI's. He only has 1 more RBI than Chipper though. Chipper is up there in all 3 categories as well.
Manny Ramirez has an outside shot for the triple crown in the AL. He's about 20 BA pts behind Damon and 6 RBI's behind Ortiz.

BOSTON - The Red Sox lost in extra innings to the Texas Rangers in a game that is sure to give manager Terry Francona some headaches. They failed to come up with hits in key situations and made numerous mistakes on the base paths and in the field.
An error by Johnny Damon led to the winning run for Texas
Red Sox players had only themselves to blame for this loss. They committed two errors, were picked off three times and only managed three runs despite having fifteen baserunners.
The most critical error came in the top of the 11th, when Johnny Damon misplayed a Hank Blalock shot off the wall. Blalock ended up on 3rd base and scored what proved to be the winning run on a sacrifice fly.
The Red Sox took an early lead off Texas starter Pedro Astacio. He walked Jason Varitek and Bill Mueller to start the 2nd. Then came a pair of doubles by Jerry Hairston Jr. and Edgar Renteria, giving Boston a 3-0 lead.
However, Texas chipped away at that lead, scoring 1 in the 3rd then 2 more on a Renteria throwing error in the 7th. Despite having baserunners in the 7th, 8th and 9th, the Red Sox were unable to put them away.
