All or Nothing: The Legacy of Lex Brock (CH06)

This is the remake thread of my coaching mode legacy with Lex Brock. He has decided to move on from a doomed career with North Florida (AKA season ending glitch) to a fresh start with the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions! He is looking forward to battling it out with the rest of the SWAC and hopes to turn around this program within 2-3 years.

Well, that's all the valid information I could think of that you guys may like to see. I think I will primarily run a Flex so that my PF will get plenty of looks at the basket, with a few Motion plays in the mix to open up the mid-range and 3-point game for my fairly decent guards. On the defensive side of things I plan to go with a primary D of Man-to-Man and secondary D of 3-2 (since I am starting 3 very short guards). My press will be the good ole reliable Fullcourt Trap run occasionally. If I discover my team can run the ball as well as their ratings indicate, then I will bump that up to after basket and try to run a very fast pace game. We shall see with time

I'll be reading and I hope to get some games in with Navy. I've been preoccupied with my Redskins sim-only franchise though (2015-16 season).

I am actually quite proud of my team's effort. We started off on ice, down 27-13 at the half, and the beginning of the second half wasn't any better. We found ourselves down by 23 with a little less than 10 minutes remaining in the game. Then my guys showed what they're truely made of. They got red hot real quick and gave Creighton a run for their money. Like Tom Brady in the 4th quarter, they marched back into the game, decreasing the deficit to as little as 5 with around a minute left in the game. But then both teams went kinda stale. We were of coursing fouling to try to get the ball back, and the Creighton players were having a very hard time hitting their free throws. But on the flipside, after we would grab the board and push the ball up court, we would make a big mistake and commit a turnover or shoot an outrageous 3. So the final 55-62 Creighton. Definitely not what I would have liked, but these guys showed me a most important thing: they can make a great run down the stretch and make it a close ball game.

Congrats on the game, much better than my team did against them. I might have to try pouding the inside more just to see if it helps. Good luck against Duquesne, if you got that close against Creighton, it should be a close game as well.

How is recruiting for you? In the one I started over I have two 7'0" guys that I should get by the end of the season, which should help the size issue, as well as a 6'5" SG.

I might have to tryout your playbook if you don't mind, so I don't have to keep calling 2-4 plays over and over again.

Recruiting is going pretty good for me. Even though I have 6 scholarships, I am only offering to 3 players this year. I have my recruiting mapped out so that it is more spread out by the end of my fourth year, 3/3/3/4. It makes it easier on a small team if I have to stick around for a long time. Right now I have a 6'2" ** PG that will commit as soon as the in-season recruiting week hits. I also have a 6'4" ** SG and a 6'7" ** SF that will commit at the end of the season. I stuck with **s for this year since I don't have the advantage of being able to do early recruiting to land bigger prospects.

You're welcome to use my playbook if you would like. I'm not going to try to say it is perfect, but I think it is a good balance between inside and outside plays, and it is taylored to feature our two best players, #23 Byrd and #14 Brown.

My team was lighting up the floor the entire night. There were stretches where I wasn't sure if we could miss. We went into the locker room with a comfortable 12 point lead, which we stretched to 21 points by the 14 minute mark in the second half. So I brought in the bench with the hopes of giving Duquesne a chance at coming back, but until the final 6 minutes or so, even that didn't help much. Finally they got into a little run, and with a little less than 2 minutes left in the game I was finally forced to bring my starters back on the floor. They had gotten as close as 6, but my starters shored up the defense and kept the lead. The buzzer sounded to a 10 point victory by my Lions. ROAR!

As you can see, Duquesne played a great game, but it just wasn't their night. My boys were zoned in and all but unstoppable. I am really enjoying this team much more than I did North Florida. With UNF it was either a blowout by the opponent or a blowout by me with absolutely no close games. But with UAPB the point differential seems to be staying within 10, which always makes a better game in my opinion. Knowing that either team could go on a hot streak and tip the balance either way just makes everything more exciting.

Congrats on the win, I just lost to Air Force, which isn't a surprise. Byrd only got to play a little because of a bruised shin, so I had to start Dobbins, who was really effective (7 points, 5 rebounds). I might try to start Dobbins at SF and see what happens, because I really liked what I saw from him.

How does 18 minutes work out for you? I've been using 15 and getting pretty low scores, so I'm thinking about bumping it up to 17-18.

Another solid performance by the Lions. We kept the game close in the first half until the last couple of minutes, then Air Force broke out and we went into halftime down by 10. But my boys battled back in the second half and regained the lead with about 8 minutes left. Air Force then seemed to fall apart on the offensive end and committed a ton of turnovers, but they played solid D and wouldn't let us get up by more than 5. They started to close again at the 2 minutes mark, but Brown took charge and kept us up by 3 until the final minute. The Falcons started fouling to try to keep in the game, but we won it at the free throw line (which is surprising because until that final minute we hadn't hit a single free throw all night). The Lions roared on to a satisfying 7 point upset

Dobbins usually gives me a solid performance off the bench. He'll play 5-7 minutes a game for me, put up like 4 points and grab down about 3-4 rebounds. Nothing spectacular, but he betrays his low ratings and adds a nice bit of depth to my bench. I've been really impressed with how well Fellows plays for me. Gunter usually gets into a lot of foul trouble, so Fellows plays about 12-15 minutes a game. He's very good at cleaning the glass and usually makes a few key baskets down low.

I'm loving 18 minute halves. I get final scores anywhere from the mid-50s to the mid-80s, which is about right for most college teams. It all depends how fast the tempo of the game turns out to be. With a 3 guard lineup we are able to run-and-gun with people easily enough when need be, but we also play a pretty solid slow-down game, pounding it inside and finding the open looks from the outside once the D collapses.

Just an interesting note before I go into my normal comments: Baylor actually had their non-conference schedule scratched this season in real life. The punishment was handed down by the NCAA for "widespread rule violations" by their former head coach, Dave Bliss. So, if anyone asks me, this game was never played

It was really a good game. Neither team was at the top of their game, but we both fought hard throughout. My Lions went into halftime with a close 3-point lead thanks to a last second shot by Williams. Unfortunately Baylor came out and jacked up a three of their own to start the second half. It was really all downhill from there. While my boys would never let them get up by more than 7, they were unable to take a lead whenever they would get it back to a tie game. The game should've ended 58-65, but Brown hit a last second three of his own to turn the game into a not-quite-as-disappointing 4 point loss. Too little too late unfortunately.

I'm very proud of my guys. They played a very solid game overall. We went into halftime up by 5 and then came back onto the court shooting lights-out. Brown was unstoppable all night. He was draining threes like no other and driving to the basket to draw fouls. Byrd had a pretty bad night all-in-all, but when the other team has a 6'9" PF and 6'10" C that both weigh in around 250lbs, it is quite understandable. Those two guys threw their weight around all night and kept the glass spotless, but we made up for it with a spectacular display of quickness and anticipation. When the buzzer sounded it was to a 16 point victory for the Golden Lions! ROAR! On to round two of the Drake Tourney.

This game was really in the bag from the very beginning. They didn't match up well with my guys at all, and how they beat Drake to get to the tourney championship game, I'll never figure out. The game stayed fairly close for the first 10 minutes or so, with both teams battling back and forth to make their prescence known. NDSU never got up by more than 3, but they did get Byrd into foul trouble early. Around the 8 minutes mark Brown got red hot and we went into the locker room with a comfortable 10 point lead. We never looked back for the rest of the game, finishing them off by a margin of 21. They won the battle of the boards (something I'm beginning to expect from all my opponents), but my boys have found their niche. They are a turnover creating team that does really well passing the ball around and dumping it off to the open man. Chalk up another attribute point for Coach Brock at the end of the season ROAR!

Wow, this was a tough battle. I was pretty sure my guys wouldn't win this one. The game started off fairly slow with both teams wanting a slower paced game and neither having any real hot hands. We went into halftime down by 1 with a score of 25-26 or something pretty low like that. Little Rock charged out of the locker room and started to slowly extend their lead. Before I knew what was happening they were up by 13 and I had all but called the game a blowout. But my Lions hung tough and wouldn't let them get up by any more than that. As we got down to 6 minutes left in the game, I was sure we were done for. But my players picked the right time to get hot. Brown finally started hitting 3s, Coleman was driving the lane and drawing fouls, Gunter and Byrd were taking care of buisness in the post. By the final minute of the game we had it tied up and then Little Rock started making some deadly mistakes. I had the fullcourt trap turned up, and it generated the turnover we needed. Byrd grabbed the ball as it was being passed in then slammed it in the hole for 2. On the next inbounds Byrd and Coleman trapped the guy and tied up the ball with the possession arrow pointing towards the Lions. So of course after the inbounds by my guys, Little Rock started fouling. Now, they had only commited 4 fouls all game, and none in the 2nd half, so we proceeded to get a good 15 seconds off the clock before we hit the 1-and-1 (fouling out one of their leading scorers, #24). Coleman sank the frontend but put too much on the second shot, and UALR got the board. They tried to quickly push the ball up the floor, but Brown jumped in a passing lane and took it away from them again. He quickly passed it up to Coleman before he could get fouled, and a few seconds later Coleman was at the line. This time he didn't miss. That was the nail in the coffin. Little Rock had time to get the ball up court and throw up a three, but it clanked and the game was over. We had somehow come from behind and won by 5, 64-59. ROAR!

Oh, thank you nofear. I'm glad you enjoy reading about my legacy
