Season Preview
Auburn Plainsman
Tuesday, February 10, 2009
After making it to the College World Series for the first time since 1997 last year, hopes are high on the Plains for the Auburn Tigers to make a return trip to Omaha.
The Tigers, who had a record of 56-17 last year, bowed out after two hardfought games in the biggest event in college baseball, but with virtually no graduations, Auburn seems poised to return. The Tigers only lost 4 players from last year's team.
Key players returning are star pitcher Kent Morgan, who was the runner-up for the Roger Clemens Award last year, closer Daniel Hardin (who has been moved to the rotation, and assumed the starting centerfielder position), and homerun/stolen base leader Jack McPherson.
Auburn starts off their season tonight against Northern Iowa of the Missouri Valley Conference. Game time is at 6:00 at Plainsman Park.Blue Jays, Blackhawks, AuburnComment

Auburn Off to Good Start
Auburn Plainsman
Thursday, February 12, 2009
The Auburn Tigers have started off the year on a winning note, sweeping the Northern Iowa Panthers by scores of 12-4, and 5-3.
The first game was all Auburn, who started off by surrendering 3 straight hits, and falling behind 1-0. The Tigers then exploded for 10 unanswered runs, led by the bottom of the order (Owens, Gaston and Mule).
The second game was a bit shakier. After opening up a 3-0 lead, the game seemed safe with Daniel Hardin dominating in his first Auburn start. However, a triple by N. Einsphar in the top of the seventh cut the lead to 3-2, and when Hardin left for J. Keller, he surrendered a sacrifice fly to tie it. However, K. Christian drove in M. Brewer on a single to left field, and M. Gaston added the insurance home run in the eighth inning.
The Tigers welcome the South Florida Bulls to Plainsman Park for a 2 game set this weekend. Both games will be at 1:00.

Tigers Can't be Stopped
Auburn Plainsman
Monday, February 16, 2009
Continuing their hot streak, the Auburn Tigers demolished the underpowered South Florida Bulls this weekend, smacking them 9-2 in the first game, and invoking the 7 inning rule in an 11-1 rout on Sunday.
The Tigers were led by a lot of hitting. A lot. The first game featured a 7 run 5th inning with 6 walks by Tiger batters. The second game featured a 5 run 5th inning with a K. Christian grand slam to centerfield. R. Saba, playing in first game in a Tiger uniform, went 4-4.
The Tigers travel to Columbus, Ohio to take on the Buckeyes next weekend.

Tigers Continue Streak
Auburn Plainsman
Monday, February 23, 2009
K. Christian and L. Alexander have stepped it up, and the Tigers will travel to Charlottesville 6-0.
The Tigers swept yet another series, winning 7-1 on Saturday, and scoring 4 runs in the 9th to beat the Buckeyes 9-5 on Sunday.
The Tigers will now go to Virginia to continue their lengthy road trip against #10 Virginia.
In other news, Auburn signed a new deal with Easton, who will now supply them with bats...or not. I'm pretty sure 7+9 > 14. Whatever...

Tigers Victimized by Cavs Power
Auburn Plainsman
Monday, March 2, 2009
The Auburn Tigers suffered their first loss of the season on Sunday, falling 14-5 to the Virginia Cavaliers, after winning 6-2 on Saturday.
The first game was a game that was not as close as the score suggested, as Auburn rode a dominant Kent Morgan to his third victory of the year.
However, the second game was a bit different. The Tigers opened up a 2-1 lead on star pitcher J. Salem. However, two 3-rin shots in the fourth by Virginia made it 8-2, and although Auburn scored 3 in the top of the 6th to make it respectable, the Tigers' Eli Drespling then gave up 6 runs in the bottom of the inning, and the Tigers were out of it.
Auburn now travels halfway across the country to Rice University to play the Owls this week.

Auburn Back to Winning Ways
Auburn Plainsman
Thursday, March 5, 2009
The Rice Owls were supposed to be a top-10 caliber team going into the year. By the looks of it, they aren't.
The Owls fell to 2-8 after being trashed by Auburn 7-1 and 13-0.
Daniel Hardin reedemed himself for his dismal start against Virginia by firing a complete game shutout with 13 strikeouts.
L. Alexander and D. Carraciolli both homered twice for Auburn in the 13-0 win.
Auburn now travels to take on the #12 Witchita State Shockers this weekend in a two game set.

Tigers Shock Wichita State
Auburn Plainsman
Sunday, March 8, 2009
Auburn went into a Witchita State's stadium, and came out with a sweep, winning both games, by scores of 2-1 and 5-2.
The Shockers, ranked #12 in the country, were hoping to improve on that against an Auburn team that has looked like a team that will still be making noise in June.
K. Morgan was the star for the Tigers in the first game, throwing 7 innnings of shutout ball, and K. Christian was the star in the finale, hitting 2 home runs.

Auburn Splits with Huskies
Auburn Plainsman
Thursday, March 12, 2009
The Auburn Tigers' winning streak came to an end, but they still managed to salvage a split with the Connecticut Huskies after blowing a 3-0 lead in the eighth inning of the first game.
The Tigers lost 4-3 after Kent Morgan gave up a grand slam to James Morneau with 2 outs in the bottom of the eighth, and left runners stranded at the corners in the ninth.
However, the Tigers recovered and won the next game decisively 5-2, backed by a strong, 6 inning performance by Daniel Hardin.

Monday, March 16, 2009
Continuing their long stretch of road games, the Auburn Tigers keep on winning, sweeping the Lafayette Eagles by scores of 6-0 and 3-2.
The first game was all Auburn, as the Tigers had another quality outing from Kent Morgan, who threw 7 innings of three-hit, shutout ball. Jack McPherson had the game-winning homerun in the second inning.
The Sunday game featured a good performacne from Daniel Hardin, who had seven strikeouts in seven plus innings.

Tigers in Tough with Texas
Auburn Plainsman
Thursday, March 19, 2009
Two of the top 5 teams in the country fought to a hard-earned split, with the Texas Longhorns overcoming a 3-0 deficit to win 7-4 in the Tuesday game, but the Auburn Tigers fought back with a 5-1 win on the Wednseday game.
The first game was a game of missed oppourtunity for the Tigers, who saw a 3-0 lead go to waste in the top of the 7th, and even though a Daniel Hardin homer made it 4-3 in the bottom of the inning, the Auburn bullpen could not stop the Texas team from scoring 3 in the ninth. With 1 out, it looked like the Tigers were going to be down 8-4, but Luis Alexander reached over the 4-foot high bullpen fence in right and brought a grand slam back. However, a run still scored on the sac fly, and the next batter doubled home two more runs.
The second game was far more pleasing for Auburn, who was led by yet another solid outing by Daniel Hardin.
The Tigers go face their bitter cross state rivals, the #6 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide, in a three game set to open up SEC play this weekend.

Tigers Lose Starter Against Tide
Auburn Plainsman
Monday, March 23, 2009
The Auburn Tigers may have taken 2 out of 3 against their rival, but the injury they suffered to their already small pitching staff is going to hurt in the long run (no pun intended).
Eli Drespling, the #3 starter on the team, broke his leg off a line drive against the Crimson Tide on Friday, a game that the Tigers lost 4-3. Auburn did win on Saturday and Sunday by scores 10-4 and 8-4 respectively.
The Friday game was an exciting one that featured a lot of power, with the wind blowing 30 MPH towards centerfield. 5 players in the game hit homeruns, 3 from Auburn.
On Saturday, Kent Morgan looked a little shaky, giving up 4 ER in 6 innings, but Dino Caraccioli had 2 homeruns, inclided a grandslam in the ninth, to secure the win.
The Sunday game featured a bit of bad blood, as an altercation between the two teams took place after Carlos Van Ostrand hit an Alabama player in the ninth inning. He has been suspended 5 games for the offence.
The Tigers now take on the surprising Louisville Cardinals, who have climbed to #8 in the country, this week in a three game set.
In other news, the Auburn baseball family is expected to announce today the plans to install a new practice facility which will feature a state of the art batting cage at the end of the season.

Auburn Beats Down Birds
Auburn Plainsman
Friday, March 27, 2009
The Auburn Tigers beat the upstart Louisville Cardinals all three times they played, 3-2, 11-4, and 4-2.
Led by good pitching, the Tigers managed just enough hitting to win the first and third games, but dominated Louisville in the second one.
The Tuesday game was marked by yet another good outing by Kent Morgan, who gave up 2 runs in six strong innings of work.
On Wednesday, the bats exploded, led by Luis Alexander's 3-5 day that featured a double, triple, and home run, with 5 RBI. Daniel Hardin had a shaky outing, and gave up 4 runs in 5 innings, before being replaced by Nate Hanlon, who was promptly suspended 5 games after his outing as a result of being late for an exam on the weekend.
The finale featured a strong showing by Scott Morlock, who looked very good in his first start, yielding 2 runs in six innings, and striking out six.
The Tigers will return home and wait for the Vanderbilt Commodores for another SEC series.
