Re: Series Review - Vanderbilt vs #3 Auburn

    Disappointing Series Win for Auburn
    Auburn Plainsman
    Monday, March 30, 2009

While the Auburn Tigers took 2 of 3 from the Vanderbilt Commodores, the team was upset they didn't sweep.

After winning the first 2 games 14-7 and 3-2, the Tigers embarrased themselves, losing 10-2 to the cellar-dwelling Commodores.

The Friday game was an offensive affair, as the Tigers tied a school record with 11 runs in the 5th inning.

On Saturday, the Auburn team was led by a late, eighth inning rally to score 3 runs, and win 3-2.

However, on Sunday, the Tigers were blasted 10-2, the big blast coming from the bat of Carlos Faldowski, who turned a 3-1 game into a 7-1 one with a huge grand slam.

The Tigers host another ranked team, the Duke Blue Devils, this week in a three game set. The Devils are currently 14-9, and ranked #15 in the country.

The Auburn Tigers won another series over the weekend, defeating the South Carolina Gamecocks 10-6 and 2-1 before falling 1-0 on Sunday.

Both teams' had very good pitching in the entire series, and it made for some exciting baseball.

The Tigers won Friday night's game on Daniel Hardin's 3-5 performance including a long homerun to left field.

On Saturday, Hardin took to the mound, and threw 8 innings of 1-run ball to lead the Tigers to a 2-1 victory.

On Sunday, Scott Morlock pitched admirably, but the Tigers could not get a run across, and stranded 13 baserunners.

The Tigers defeated the Volunteers of Tennessee by scores of 9-1, 8-3 and 9-2.

Once again, pitching made the difference for the Tigers, and all three starters had solid perfomances, the most impressive being Daniel Hardin's 15 strikeout game.

As well, the power game got going, as Auburn hit nine homers in the series.

Tigers Lose First Series of Year
                Auburn Plainsman
                Monday, April 20, 2009

Over two months into the season, the Auburn Tigers had not lost a series. That changed on Sunday, after the Tigers dropped 2 of 3 to the lowly Georgia Bulldogs, by scores of 10-3 (AU), 5-2, and 2-0.

The Tigers could not muster any offence in the final game, and another good Morlock pitching performance went to waste.

The Tigers hit 4 home runs in Friday's 10-3 win. They now take on the Houston Cougars in a two gamer here in Auburn,

Rebels Take Two Thrillers From Tigers
                    Auburn Plainsman
                    Monday, April 27, 2009

The Ole Miss Rebels took the Auburn Tigers out of their top spot in the SEC.

With two wins against the Tigers by scores of 8-7, and 2-1, after falling 6-3, in the opener, the Rebels now share first place in the SEC West with #6 Arkansas, while the Tigers are one game behind.

The first game was also a good one, as the Tigers opened up the scoring early, with the help of Daniel Hardin, who stole 3 bases. Kelly Christian doubled down the left field line to bring in two runs to get Auburn on the board. Backed up by a strong 7 innings from Roger Clemens Award candidate Kent Morgan, the Tiger cruised to a 6-3 win.

The Saturday game was even better. Ole Miss opened up the scoring with a three run shot by Dave Daniels, and appeared to be poised to romp. With the score 7-2 in the 9th, Brent Dunwoody, a mop-up reliever was brought in, and promptly gave up back to back solo shots to Rich Saba and Tommy Mule.
After retiring Daniel Hardin, Wigginton and McPherson singled, which brought up Luis Alexander, who hit a mammoth 512 footer well over Swayze Field.

Jake Keller then came in for the 9th, to send it to extras, but gave up a single and 2 SB's, and Hardin could not gun down the runner at the plate after a long sacrifice fly by Daniels.

The Sunday game was yet another example of a good Scott Morlock pitching performance being wasted, as the Tigers had Dino Caraccioli at 3rd with one out in the 7th, but could not drive him in, and fell 2-1.

The Missouri Tigers come to Plainsman Park for a 2 game set starting today.

                      Wednesday, April 29, 2009

It was one of those series that you just had to see to believe.

The Missouri Tigers combined to score 23 runs in Monday's game...but 21 of those came in extra innings, including an 18 run 11th frame. On Tuesday, the Tigers scored 2 in the bottom of the 9th to win 3-2.

On Monday, for 10 innings, it was the Kent Morgan show. 5 hits, 1 run, 9 strikouts. However, inexplicably (he was at 11/70 stamina, I figured I had a shot), he was sent out for the eleventh inning, and gave up three straight hits, and then a grand slam, before walking the bases loaded. Then, Jake Keller came in to stop the bleeding, and promptly gave up another grandslam.

In the bottom of the inning, the Tigers strung together 8 straight hits (Auburn didn't hit one HR all game), and with 2 outs, had runners at 2nd and 3rd for Tommy Mule, who was the third batter to start the inning. He doubled off the wall in left, and drove in two. However, Daniel Hardin struck out, and it went to the twelfth, where, once again, Missouri scored. However, Horacio Wigginton singled, made it to second on a little squibber, and scored on a double by Dino Caraccioli. Another run in the 13th of A.C. Sandell was too much however, as Jack McPherson was stranded on second base.

The second game, while a bit more low-scoring, was just as exciting. In the bottom of the ninth, Tommy Mule and Rich Saba both reached base to leadoff the inning. After getting advanced by a sac bunt from Seth Owens, McPherson hit a grounder that tied it, and Wigginton singled to right.

The Tigers now take on the #4 Kentucky Wildcats in a highly anticpated series that has been sold out since February.

                        Tigers Win Series Against Cats
                        Auburn Plainsman
                        Monday, May 4, 2009

With 9 games to go, the Auburn Tigers appear to be in good shape to be hosting a regional.

The Tigers stood up to their toughest test of the year so far, beating the Kentucky Wildcats 10-1 and 3-0, before losing 7-4 on Sunday.

However, the Tigers, who are now 37-14, are in a three way tie for the best record in the SEC West (and the SEC), and that may come down to the regular season finale with the Arkansas Razorbacks.

The Tigers exploded for 10 runs in the opener, led by Seth Owens, who went 3-3, and walked twice. Kent Morgan threw 8.1 solid innings of work, and has moved into an informal lead for the Roger Clemens Award, given annually to the top pitcher in college baseball.

On Saturday, the Tigers stuggled to score runs, but Daniel Hardin hurled 8 innings of shutout ball. Rich Saba hit the game winning homer in the 5th inning.

The Sunday match had Scott Morlock, who has pitched admirably, while filling in for Eli Drespling, who broke his leg two months ago, getting rocked for 7 runs in only 2+ innings. The Tigers scored 4 late runs, but were never in it.

Auburn only has SEC games left in the year, with series against Mississippi State and Arkansas. First, however, they will face the Louisiana State Tigers this weekend at Plainsman.

In what should have been a series that seperated the Auburn Tigers from the rest of the SEC pack, the Tigers instead let another team into the race.

The surprising Louisiana State Tigers are now tied for the SEC West lead after coming into Plainsman Park and taking 2 of 3.

Auburn, who lucked out when Arkansas also lost two of three to Mississippi State, now is in a race where realistically, all 6 teams have a shot for the division title. Auburn, Arkansas and LSU are tied for the lead, with Mississippi a game back, and Alabama and Mississippi State sitting three back.

Auburn has series at Miss. State and vs Arkansas left. Arkansas has LSU and Auburn, so they control their own destiny, while on the last weekend of the year, LSU will face South Carolina.

Auburn had no problem disposing of LSU in the opener, scoring 7 times in the 4th and 5th to win 10-1.

However, on Saturday, Auburn was down 4-0 early, and although they rallied to take, Nate Hanlon took his first loss of the year after LSU homered in the 8th.

On Sunday, Kelly Chrisitan left the bases loaded in the bottom of the 11th, and LSU, who were outplayed for the first 10 innings, ran out of Auburn with a 7-6 win.

The series against Mississippi State starts on Friday, in Starkville.

Auburn came into the weekend series with the Mississippi State Bulldogs, hoping to sweep, and maintain their lead in the SEC West. They did just that.

After sweeping Miss State by scores of 5-4, 6-2, and 5-2, the Tigers now just have to beat Arkansas twice to get the guaranteed #1 seed as division champion.

The Tigers face Arkansas at home this weekend, starting Friday at 1:00 pm.

Auburn opened up the series with a tough extra inning win, led by Kelly Christian's game winning RBI double. Horacio Wigginton's 3 run shot on Saturday was the difference, and on Sunday, it was Dino Caraccioli continuing his quest to be the top freshman in the country with a big homerun.

As well, tickets for the SEC Tournament, to be played in Hoover Memorial Stadium, home of the Birmingham Barons, are now on sale.

For the second straight year in a row, the Auburn Tigers will have the #1 seed in the SEC Tournament. However, that may not be a good thing.

The Tigers ran the Arkansas Razorbacks right out of Auburn, winning 4-0, 8-7, and then smoking them 15-0 in 6.5 innings in the finale.

On Friday, Kent Morgan solidified his claim for the Roger Clemens Trophy, by throwing a 5-hit shutout.

The Saturday game was a back and forth thriller, with six lead changes, before Jack McPherson singled in the game-winner in the 10th.

Arkansas threw in the towel on Sunday, in what was a purely brutal game by the Razorbacks.

Now, the Tigers open up against the #8 seed in the SEC...who happens to be #8 Kentucky! Game time at Hoover is Friday afternoon at 2:00.

The first step to Omaha begins today, with the start of the Southeastern Conference Tournament. Let's preview the 8 teams.

                                Bracket 1
                                Seed 1 - #2 Auburn Tigers
                                Record: 44-16 (20-10)
Best Player: Kelly Christian - 3B (94 OVR)
Outlook: The Tigers roared through the regular season, finishing with the best record in the SEC. Auburn won this tounament last year, and it would be surprising if they did it again. The best team power-wise and average-wise in the league.
                                Odds: 1-2

                                Seed 2 - #24 Alabama Crimson Tide
                                Record: 33-27 (16-14)
Best Player: Charles Bogar - SS (97)
Outlook: The Crimson Tide are the lowest seed in this stacked bracket. They're a team that's middle of the pack in every single major statistic in the SEC. The kind of team that won't outpower you, but will slowly wear you down. It would not be surprising to see them lose the first game, and win the next four.
                                Odds: 10-1

                                Seed 3 - #22 South Carolina Gamecocks
                                Record: 32-28 (16-14)
Best Player: Matt Almanza - SP (92)
Outlook: Very little power, but they use a lot of smallball and run a lot. Had a very good run (10-5) at the end of the year to get where they are now. A team on a hot streak going into the playoffs is always dangerous.
                                Odds: 12-1

                                Seed 4 - #9 Kentucky Wildcats
                                Record: 37-23 (15-15)
Best Player: Olaf Blunt - CF (96)
Outlook: Disappointed greatly in SEC play, but managed to squeak into the tournament after a Georgia loss in the last game of the year. One of the best teams in the country when they want to play. Stole 125 bases durin the year, 36 more then the next best (Mississippi). Can also hit for power. Were supposed to be the ones facing Auburn in the finals, but could shock them in the first round.
                                Odds: 15-2

                                Bracket 2
                                Seed 1 - Florida Gators
                                Record: 29-31 (17-13)
Best Player: Jeremy Joyner - SP (92)
Outlook: The kind of team that everyone thinks is horrible, but manages to beat you. Were actually outscored during the season, and have the second worst ERA in the tournament. However, they have sparkling D, and that will need to stand up.
                                Odds: 3-1

                                Seed 2 - #8 Arkansas Razorbacks
                                Record: 36-24 (17-13)
Best Player: Nick Doane - SS (96)
Outlook: Looked very bad in the last weekend series against Auburn, but still a very good club. Don't hit for power or speed, but have the best ERA in the SEC, and pitching wins championships. Are favoured to come out of this bracket to the finals.
                                Odds: 5-2

                                Seed 3 - Mississippi Rebels
                                Record: 31-29 (16-14)
                                Best Player: Brain Melton - 2B (96)
Outlook: When you have the best defence in the SEC, but the worst ERA, you know you have bad pitching. Run a lot, and hit for a high average (.297, second best in SEC). If the bats get going, then this team can win a slugfest.
                                Odds: 15-1

Seed 4 - Louisiana State Tigers
                                Record: 29-31 (16-14)
Best Player: Grant Urban - SP (91)
Outlook: The old power days of LSU are gone. This team can hit for average, and run now. However, they have little pitching, and will have a tough first two games. If they can beat Florida, they might have a shot.
                                Odds: 20-1

Note: The two #4 seeds, LSU and Kentucky, met in the finals, with LSU winning 9-6.
