Long Island University Blackbirds 2003-04 Preview:

Northeast Conference Champion LIU and NEC Coach of the Year Brian Keller look to improve on an 22-9, 14-4 season in which the Blackbirds reached the NCAA Tournament, losing to the University of Maryland in the first round.

"Our goal is to build on last season, we accomplished a lot last year, winning the conference and the [conference] tournament. This program has a long way to go but we are headed in the right direction," said Keller.

Gone are second team all conference shooting guard Raoul Spencer (16.0 ppg) who carried the Blackbirds through the Conference Tournament winning Most Valuable Player, and third team all conference small forward Isaiah McIntyre (14.0 ppg, 7 rpg), the teams best defender. Also graduated were center Desmon Brutheliues (11.0 ppg 7.0 rpg), starting power forward Shane Porter (9.0 ppg, 8.0 rpg) and reserve forward Ime Young.

"We lose a lot from last years team. Our Seniors were our go to guys its hard to replace players like Spencer and McIntyre. They were the two best players on each end. We definitely have some people coming back who are ready to fill those holes," commented Keller when asked about this years team.

The Blackbirds return two starters, Senior point guard Lucas Sutton and Sophomore center Al Davenport. "We're gonna move Lucas to the two and play Russell [Grady] at the one. The other two spots [small forward and power forward] are yet to be decided".

LIU added five freshmen in the of season including 4 three star recuits and a total of three players from Brooklyn, New York. 6'1 point guard Anthony Bowie from Manhattan, ranked #138 by many analysts and described as a floor general with great court vision is the best of the group and willl see significant playing time running the second unit offense now that Lucas Sutton will be playing shooting guard and Russell Grady will be starting at the point.

Freshmen small forwards Hollis Hodges (#224) a 6'7 slasher and Dane Cooper (#522) a 6'6 shooter, both from Brooklyn will battle 6'7 Junior Uche Cooke for the starting position vacated by Isaia McIntyre.

Atheletic 6'10 center David Dean of Baltimore, Maryland (#375) will start at power forward alongside Davenport, and bruising 6'10 power forward Bob Johnson (#375) also from Brooklyn will most likely be the first forward off the bench.

Sophmore guard Kirby Banks who played limited minutes last season will see more time as a reserve shooting guard.

        Projected Line-up:

        PG-Russell Grady (JR)
        SG-Lucas Sutton (SR)
        SF-Hollis Hodges (FR)
        PF-Dave Dean (FR)
        C-Al Davenport (SO)

        Bench:
        PG-Bowie (FR)
        SG-Banks (SO)
        SF-Cook (JR)
        SF-Cooper (FR)
        PF-Johnson (FR)
        11-pg Caldwell (SO)

i recruited about 4/5 different times using different strategies just to get an idea of how to go about it. every time i tried i couldnt land a four star even with focusing on one or two particular 4 stars at the expense of other 3 stars etc. so that last time i just went with what i got. the 4 three stars and the two star

Long Island University NEC Regular Season Champions:

AP-New York- For the second consecutive season the Long Island University Blackbirds will be the number one seed entering the Northeast Conference Tournament. Head Coach Brian Keller led the Blackbirds (23-4, 16-2) to consecutive regular season championships and was also name NEC Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season.

"The league was a lot closer at the top this year. Quinnipiac, [Bridgeport] Tech, and Robert Morris all had excellent teams which made every conference game count" said Keller.

LIU winners of 16 straight head into the opening round of the tournament against eigth seeded St. Francis of Pennsylvania. The Blackbirds lost only four games to Nevada, Arkansas Little Rock, NY College, and Bridgeport Tech early in the season. LIU had some impressive non-conference victories including an opening night win in the Carrier Dome against Syracuse and a 12 point victory over Penn in Philadelphia.

LIU despite their impressive record and Coach of the Year award suprisingly placed no players on any of the three all conference teams. Asked about this Coach Keller commented, "just some more motivation for our guys. I think the league overlooked some of our players".

LIU Steals Blue Chip Power Forward Glover:

AP-Maryland- In one of the most suprising recruiting stories of the 2004-2005 season the Long Island University Blackbirds announced the signing of Top 50 blue chip Power Forward Craig Glover of Parkville, MD High School. The 6'8 259 pound Glover is ranked by many analysts as the #48 prospect in the nation and #7 Power Forward. Glover chose LIU's uptempo, pressing style over Maryland, North Carolina State and other more recognized programs nationally.

"I am excited to be playing for Coach Keller and hope I can be the kind of player that will push LIU further into the spotlight" said Glover at his news conference announcing his signing with LIU. Glover averaged 22.0 ppg and 11.7 rpg for Parkville as a senior.

The Blackbirds also signed slashing 6'2 shooting guard Boakai Richardson from Brooklyn. Until the signing of Glover, Richardson, the #102 ranked prospect by many publications was seen as LIU's best recruit in the last seven seasons.

"We've now brought in two great players, both top 100 players who will make an immediate impact in our program" said two time NEC Head Coach of the Year Brian Keller who is in his third season at LIU. LIU graduated star shooting guard Lucas Sutton and reserve PF Joseph Jacobs.

                    Starters:
PG-Russell Grady (Sr.) playmake and scorer 6.8 apg

been getting tired of hammering everyone in conference with my "improved' LIU team so i simmed through most of the games playing only about 5 and the Conference tourney with the hopes i get a shot at a school on a bigger stage.

by the way i forgot to mention that Georgia Tech defeated Duke last Season for (if?) anyone wanted to know. i'm just entering the ncaa tournament now and am waiting to see where i get seeded.
