The New York Yankees (MVP '05 PC)

Essentially the final update mod for 2006 is finished (besides the portraits) so I started up my Yankee dynasty earlier this week. Since I've been playing MVP for a solid 14 months now I do not play regular seasons anymore. I sim the entire regular season and if I make the playoffs (which I usually do since I'm the Yanks) then I play the post season. If not, I move on to the front office work and sim another season. This way I can fly through seasons instead of taking months and months to complete one.

    Some basics...

Game: EA Sports MVP Baseball 2005 (PC)
Mods: Ultimate Rosters 6.5+ courtesy of mvpmods.com
Sliders: Tarheelman's Pro Sliders with a few tweaks.

    On to the 2006 season...

      2006 National League Divisional Series

New York Mets defeated San Fransisco Giants 3-2.
Philadelphia Phillies defeated Cincinnati Reds 3-1.

      2006 American League Divisional Series

Boston Red Sox defeat Minnesota Twins 3-2.
New York Yankees defeat Oakland A's 3-1.

      Game 1 @ Oakland: Yankees win 4-1
      Randy Johnson vs. Barry Zito

The series got off to a slow start with neither team getting a basehit until the 4th inning. Jorge Posada finally cracked the scoring column with a solo homer in the sixth inning. Derek Jeter added a two-run homer in the 8th as Mariano Rivera pitched the 9th to earn his first save of the post season, despite giving up a solo home run to Eric Chavez.

      Game 2 @ Oakland: Yankees win 7-3
      Carl Pavano vs. Rich Harden

The Yankees took a commanding 2-0 series lead behind the power of the heart of the order. Alex Rodriguez, Hideki Matsui and Gary Sheffield all homered to lead the offensive onslaught. Pavano pitched 6 1/3 solid innings to earn the victory.

Game 3 @ New York: Oakland Wins 3-1
      Mike Mussina vs. Dan Haren

In a pitching duel, Oakland grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the 3rd on a basehit by Bobby Crosby. Derek Jeter tied the game in the 7th with his second home run of the series. However, Mariano Rivera struggled once again, giving up the game-winning home run to Milton Bradley in the top of the ninth.

Game 4 @ New York: Yankees win 9-3
      Randy Johnson vs. Barry Zito

The Yankees wasted little time putting the ALDS on ice with five first inning runs highlighted by a 3-run blast by Alex Rodriguez. Derek Jeter and Jason Giambi also homered as the Yankees wrapped up the series in four games. For the 4th time in seven years the Bronx Bombers will meet the Boston Red Sox to fight for the American League Pennant.

        2006 National League Championship Series

Philladelphia Phillies defeated New York Mets 4-2.

        2006 American League Championship Series

New York Yankees defeated Boston Red Sox 4-2.

        Game 1 @ Boston: Yankees win 7-6
        Carl Pavano vs. Curt Schilling

The Series got off to a quick start when Manny Rameriz blasted a three-run homer in the first, but Carl Pavano settled down and allowed just two runs over the next six innings. The Yanks got back in the game with a series of base hits in the 4th that lead to a four-run inning. The big blow came in the 8th on A-Rod's two-run homer that gave the Yankees their 7-6 lead. Rivera earned the save in the 9th.

        Game 2 @ Boston: Yankees win 13-8

        Mike Mussina vs. Josh Beckett

The offensive fireworks continued in Game 2 when the Yankees belted seven home runs (six over the Green Monster) en route to a 2-0 series lead and sweeping the Sox in Boston. Derek Jeter, Gary Sheffield, Alex Rodriguez and Robinson Cano all homered for the Yanks.

Game 3 @ New York: Boston wins 4-2
        Randy Johnson vs. David Wells

David Wells went 21-4 during the regular season to win his first career Cy Young Award. Who says lefties can't suceed at Fenway!? Wells was true form, holding the Yankees to one run in eight innings of work. Mariano Rivera continued his post season struggles in the loss. With the game tied at 2 in the 9th inning Rivera gave up back-to-back home runs to David Ortiz and Jason Varitek, both smashed into the upper deck. Boston avoided the 3-0 deficit with the victory.

Game 4 @ New York: Yankees win 3-2
        Carl Pavano vs. Curt Schilling

In the most dramatic game of the series, the Yankees defeated Boston in 12 innings, 3-2. Staked to an early 2-0 lead, Curt Schilling had a great outting, allowing just 1 run through 8 1/3 innings. However, rookie Jonathan Papelbon allowed a basehit to Melky Cabrera in the bottom of the 9th that scored pinch-runner Miguel Cairo to tie the game. In the bottom of the 12th, Hideki Matsui launched a David Riske fastball into the upper deck in right, giving the Yankees a 3-1 series lead.

Game 5 @ New York: Boston wins 6-4
        Mike Mussina vs. Josh Beckett

Needing a victory to stay alive, Josh Beckett pitched a marvelous game to lead Boston to a win. After giving up a first-inning home run to Derek Jeter, Beckett didn't allow another run for the next 7 innings. The Yankees put up a fight in the 9th, getting three runs off Keith Foulke before Jonathan Papelbon came in to earn the save. Boston took two of three in New York.

        Game 6 @ Boston: Yankees win 9-2
        Randy Johnson vs. David Wells

Similar to Game 4 of the ALDS against Oakland, the Yankees jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. Gary Sheffield was the spark, blasting three homers over the Green Monster. Scoring six runs in the first two innings and knocking out Cy Young winner David Wells after 3 2/3 innings, the Yankees still saved room for some drama. Leading 6-0 in the 7th, Johnson gave up four straight hits to start the inning as Boston scored two runs. Trailing 6-2, the bases were loaded with 1 out for Manny Ramirez. Manny popped out to Matsui in left and David Ortiz followed with a loud out to center. Gary Sheffield hit is third and final homer of the game, a three-run job, in the top of the 9th to give the Yankees some more breathing room in a 9-2 lead.

The Yankees captured their 40th pennant and moved on to the World Series to face the upstart Philadelphia Phillies.

          2006 World Series

New York Yankees defeat Philadelphia Phillies 4-0.

The Philadelphia Phillies' magical ride ended with a crushing 4-0 sweep at the hands of the New York Yankees. After shocking the powerful NY Mets in the NLCS, the Fightin' Phils ran out of steam against the Bronx Bombers. The mediocore Philadelphia pitching staff, combined with the friendly confines of Citizen Bank Park and the potent Yankee lineup, was hammered all series.

          Game 1 @ Philadelphia: Yankees win 5-0
          Randy Johnson vs. Jon Leiber

Randy Johnson had another stellar outing, this time tossing 8 shutout innings to lead the Yanks to a Game 1 victory. Jon Leiber started strong, retiring the first 12 men he faced and allowed only one run in the first five innings. However, like many times before, the Yankee lineup exploded in one inning to put a game out of reach. A two-run Jorge Posada homer highlighted a 4-run 8th inning that put the game out of reach before Mariano Rivera sealed the victory in the 9th.

          Game 2 @ Philadelphia: Yankees win 7-2
          Carl Pavano vs. Ryan Madsen

A close game throughout, tied at 2-2 in the 7th inning the Yanks scored 5 runs, highlighted by Hideki Matsui's 3-run blast to give the Yankees all the room they'd need to take a 2-0 series lead.

Game 3 @ New York: Yankees win 7-3
          Mike Mussina vs. Brett Myers

The Phillies finally held their first lead of the series with an early 2-0 advantage, but the Yankees used a 6-run 5th to knock Myers from the game and blow it open. Mussina was knocked around but got out of several jams to avoid any serious damage.

Game 4 @ New York: Yankees win 10-6
          Randy Johnson vs. Jon Leiber

The Yankees ended the first two series of the post season in the same fashion as the World Series, dealing an early knockout blow and crusing from there. Alex Rodriguez and Gary Sheffield homered early on, as the Yanks lead 9-0 after three innings. A Ryan Howard grand slam made things somewhat interesting in the 8th, but the Phillies never threatened again.

The Yankees clinched their 27th World Series Championship with the victory. The Bombers went a remarkable 7-0 on the road during the post season and were an even 4-4 at Yankee Stadium. Derek Jeter was the post season MVP, putting up numbers of...

          .368, 7 HR, 16 RBI, 18 R, 21 H.

The only really large FA aquisition by the CPU was Ryan Howard leaving Philly to go to Colorado, which doesn't make much sense since Helton is still on the Rockies.

                Did RJ retire?

I'm assuming not...but he usually retires in the first or second season during my dynasties.

I'd simmed '05 a buncha times when I was still playing around with prior mods and I'd say 3 outta 4 times he retired. I assumed cause I won the WS he'd call it quits but he didn't. I was hoping Sheff would be out too, but I guess I have him for one more year.

                      2007: The Youth Movement

Starting in the winter of '06-'07 the Yankees began their youth movement, trying to replace overpriced, over-the-hill veterans with young, hungier players.

The marquee trade of the off-season saw Gary Sheffield and Jorge Sosa shipped to the Nationals for outfielder Alfonso Soriano and a minor leaguer. This marks Soriano's second stint in pinstripes - the 30 year old was slated to spend 2007 patrolling right field for the Bombers, however that changed halfway through the season.

As the trade deadline approached, the Boston Red Sox made an interesting offer to New York's front office - 26 year old bullpen ace Yhency Brazoban for the aging CF and ex-Red Sox Johnny Damon. With 3 years and $12 million still owed to Damon, the Yankees decided to pull the trigger and dump the lead off hitter who's skills at the plate had been rapidly going downhill. This move also helped strengthen New York's weak and shallow bullpen. Alfonso Soriano will move to center and Melky Cabrera will become the everyday right fielder.
