        2007 National League Divisional Series

Milwaukee Brewers defeat Los Angeles Dodgers 3-1
Philadelphia Phillies defeat Houston Astros 3-0

        2007 American League Divisional Series

Oakland A's defeat Boston Red Sox 3-2 (apparently I thought Texas had won the West in my last post)
New York Yankees defeat Minnesota Twins 3-0

        Game 1 @ Minnesota: Yankees win 3-1
        Randy Johnson vs. Johan Santana

The Yankees used some timely hitting and a great start from Randy Johnson to steal Game 1 of the ALDS in Minnesota. Robinson Cano homered in the 4th to tie the game at 1-1, then a 2-out RBI double by Hideki Matsui in the 8th gave the Yanks the lead for good - Rivera pitched the 9th for the save.

        Game 2 @ Minnesota: Yankees win 11-5
        Carl Pavano vs. Brad Radke

The Yanks jumped all over 17-game winner Brad Radke, KO'ing him after he allowed 7 runs in 3 1/3 innings. Alfonso Soriano blasted a three-run homer and Alex Rodriguez added a 2-run blast.

Game 3 @ New York: Yankees win 6-4
        Zack Duke vs. Fransisco Liriano

The Yanks finished up their sweep of the Twins with a 6-4 win at The Stadium. The Twins held an early 3-0 lead, but the Yanks rallied off the Twins' young phenom for five runs in the 5th inning. Rivera tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings for his second save of the series.

          2007 National League Championship Series

Milwaukee Brewers defeat Philadelphia Phillies 4-3

          2007 American League Championship Series

Oakland A's defeat New York Yankees 4-1

Game 1 @ New York: Oakland wins 7-5
          Randy Johnson vs. Barry Zito

The ALCS got underway with a 7-5 Oakland victory in the Bronx. The Yankees struck early during a 3-run first inning. The Bombers led 5-3 going into the 8th when set up man Makay McBride made his Yankee postseason debut one to forget. McBride retired the first man he faced then gave up four consecutive hits - including three extra basehits, allowing the A's to take a 7-5 lead that they would not relinquish. Huston Street got into a jam in the 9th, but with men on first and third Alfonso Soriano grounded into a game-ending double play.

Game 2 @ New York: Oakland wins 9-6
          Carl Pavano vs. Dan Haren

For the second consecutive game the Yankees' bullpen blew an early lead and let a game slip away. This time, it was Yhency Brazoban who gave up a 3-run home run to Frank Thomas to give the A's a 7-6 lead in the 8th. Eric Chavez added a solo homer before Joe Torre finally pulled Brazoban from the game. The A's tacked on one more run before leaving New York with a 2-0 series lead.

          Game 3 @ Oakland: Oakland wins 15-9
          Zack Duke vs. Rich Harden

Oakland seemingly put the pennant on ice with an offensive explosion in Game 3. After retiring the first six men he faced, Zack Duke got rocked for 7 runs in the third inning, including a grand slam to Marco Scutaro. Trailing 7-2, the Yankees rallied all the way back to take a 9-8 lead in the 7th inning on timely hitting and smallball. However, Jorge De Paula gave up the game's second grand slam - this time to Eric Chavez - to give the A's all the cushion they'd need.

          Game 4 @ Oakland: Yankees win 8-7 (20 innings)
          Mike Mussina vs. Barry Zito

In perhaps the wildest playoff game in recent memory, the Yankees avoided a sweep by outlasting the A's 8-7 in 20 innings. Mussina and Zito both had fantastic outings, as the Yankees led 2-1 in the top of the 8th. Yhency Brazoban was once again the goat, this time giving up a 2-out, game-tying RBI double to Dan Johnson. Then the scoreless marathon was on, the game remained 2-2 until the 18th inning when Jason Giambi came up huge with a monsterous grand slam into the seats in right, giving the Yankees a 6-2 lead. However, the Yankee bullpen failed once again as Mariano Rivera gave up four runs of his own in the bottom of the 18th, the last coming on RBI single to right where Bobby Crosby just barely beat Melky Cabrera's throw to the plate. In the top of the 20th, Derek Jeter's 2-run double put the Yanks on top 8-6, and Chien Ming Wang pitched the 20th for the win, despite allowing a run.

          Game 5 @ Oakland: Oakland wins 11-5
          Randy Johnson vs. Dan Haren

This was not the way Randy Johnson wanted to end his career. The Unit lasted just 2 2/3 innings after getting shelled all over the park in an 11-5 defeat. Johnson gave up six runs including two home runs and also allowed 10 hits. The Yankees tried to get back in the game, pulling to within 8-5 in the 8th, however the Yankee bullpen was incompetent once a gain, allowing three runs in the bottom half of the inning to swing the momentum and put the game on ice.

          Recap

The Yankee front office focused a great deal on improving the bullpen as well as making the team younger during the previous off season. While the bullpen was drastically younger - and fairly talented - youth was served as the Yankee middle relievers were hammered all series long. The two set up men, Yhency Brazoban and Mackay McBride, were hit the hardest in their first post season appearnce in pinstripes.

The Yankees move on to the winter of '07-'08 with several changes looming in their pitching staff, as aging Mike Mussina and Randy Johnson must ponder the next step in their careers.
