New York Yankees (MVP 05 PC)

    Game 1 at Oakland

Yankees took the early lead in this one on an RBI single by Andy Phillips in the 3rd. A's answered back quickly as in the next inning free agent pickup Sammy Sosa took Randy Johnson deep, tying the game. In the 5th, the Yankees picked up 3 on an RBI single by Johnny Damon, and then a 2 run single by Giambi, making it 4-1. A's would answer back in the 6th with a 2 run homer by Eric Chavez. The Yankees took a 5-3 lead into the 9th with Rivera on the mound. After striking out Nick Swisher on 3 pitches, and getting an 0-2 count on Dan Johnson, Rivera unraveled. Johnson worked the count to 3-2, and then crushed a cutter into the right field stands, making it 5-4. Rivera then gave up a double, and then a single that Bobby Crosby tried to score on. He was gunned down by Matsui however, and the Yankees hung on for a 5-4 win.

    W- Randy Johnson (1-0)
    L- Barry Zito (0-1)
    S- Mariano Rivera (1)

    1-0

Re: New York Yankees (MVP 05 PC)

      Game 3 at Oakland
Yankees got off to a fast start putting up 3 runs in the first inning. Wang started off well, pitching 3 scoreless innings, but in the 4th he got knocked around, giving up 4 runs highlighted by a 3 run Bobby Crosby homer. A's added a 5th run in the 5th, and 2 more in the 7th, making it 7-3. Yankees scored once in the 8th making it 7-4, but things still looked bleak heading to the 9th.

Then, the Yankees rallied. Yankees got a blooper and a walk, putting runners on first and 2nd with 1 out for Jeter. Jeter hit a chopper back to the pitcher, what looked like a double play ball. It was misplaced however, and not only was everybody safe, it bounced off the head of Duscherer, knocking him out of the game. Giambi than greeted Juan Cruz with a 2 run single, and Arod followed with a 2 run double, and all of a sudden the Yankees led 8-7.

Rivera came on in the 9th and shut the door for a shocking win for the Yankees.

      W- Octavio Dotel (1-0)
      L- J. Duscherer (0-1)
      S- Mariano Rivera (2)

      2-1

        Game 4 at LAA
Shawn Chacon got off to a rocky start, loading the bases with nobody out in the first. He then preceded to strike out the next 3 batters to get out of the inning. It was a great escape, but that long inning took a toll on him, and he tired by the 4th inning. When it was all over, the Angels belted out 4 homeruns, beating the Yankees 7-2.

        W- Erving Santana (1-0)
        L- Shawn Chacon (0-1)

        2-2

Jorge Posada pulled his groin legging out a 9th inning double. He is listed as day to day.

            Game 6 at LAA
With the game tied at 1 in the top of the 8th, Hideki Matsui led off the inning with a double. Robinson Cano followed with a single up the middle, scoring Matsui, giving the Yankees a 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of the 8th, the Yankees turned to Kyle Farnsworth. 2 hits and a walk later and the bases were loaded with nobody out. Joe Torre turned to Rivera for a 6 out save. He gave up a sacrifice fly on the first pitch, tying the game, but was able to get out of the inning without further damage. He did not have as much success in the bottom of the 9th though, as after giving up 2 bloop singles, he surrendered a 3 run walk off homer to Daryn Erstad, giving the Angels a 5-2 win.

            W- Franciisco Rodriguez (1-0)
            L- Mariano Rivera (0-1)

                Game 8 vs. KC

After the Yankees jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first on a Derek Jeter homerun, the Royals knocked around Shawn Chacon, picking up 6 runs in the 2nd, and knocking him out of the game. Jaret Wright came in and held down the fort, and in the 6th inning the Yankees rallied for 4 runs, tying the game at 6. However, in the 7th the Royals took Wright deep back to back, and took a 9-6 lead. The Yankees would get 1 in the bottom of the 7th, and load the bases in the 9th, but Jorge Posada popped out to the catcher, and the Royals hung on.

                  Game 9 vs. KC

Through 8 innings the Yankees looked in complete control. Randy Johnson was brilliant, throwing a shutout through 8, and the Yankees had a 3-0 lead. They handed the game over to Mariano Rivera, which in years past ment the game was over. Not this year. Rivera was rocked for 4 runs, including 2 homers, as the Royals stunned the Yankees with a 4-3 win.

                  W- K. Snyder (1-0)

Johan Santana did not have it, giving up 8 runs in 6 innings. And while they got into some big jams, the Yankees bullpen finally did the job, and the Yankees won 9-6. The 2 biggest slumping Yankees, Damon and Jeter combined for 5 hits, 4 RBI's, and 2 runs.
