    A Coaching Legend in the Making (CH2k7 - PS2)

    Morehead State Eagles

Morehead State Announces New Head Coach

Morehead, KY – After the debacle that was last season’s 4-23 record and the dismissal of Kyle Macy as head coach, the Morehead State Eagles were ready to usher in a new era, and they did just that today when Jason Whitt was introduced as the head coach of the Morehead State Eagles.

“It feels good to be home again,” said Whitt.

Whitt, a former Morehead State standout, has had previous coaching experience in the college ranks before heading off to the high school ranks, where he was very successful, coaching his old high school to back-to-back state tournament appearances. Not bad for a small Class A school in Kentucky’s all comers format.

But the new coach warned fans not to expect an immediate turnaround.

“We’re a young team, and as such, there are going to be growing pains. But in my view, the sky is the limit with this program.”

      10/23/2006 – Midnight Madness

Morehead, KY – With a small crowd at Ellis T. Johnson Arena (most people were probably in Lexington at Rupp Arena), the players of the new look Morehead State Eagles probably felt like they were having a closed door practice. But for the people who came out to see tonight’s intra-squad scrimmage, they got a very good and exciting game. In the end, the first team defeated the second team 58-57, as the second half saw the game go back and forth with several ties and lead changes.

“It was a good game to watch if you’re a fan,” said Jason Whitt. “Of course, I wasn’t a fan tonight. I saw some good things out on the floor. I also saw some things that weren’t so good. But, we still have two and a half weeks of practice before we travel to Penn State, so we have time to fix those things.”

As far as announcing his starting lineup, Coach Whitt wasn’t ready to give up the bearings.

“No, it doesn’t make much sense to name a starting lineup after the first practice. Three of the spots are nailed down, with three players fighting for the remaining two spots. So, it’s going to be an interesting two weeks of practice.”

So if he won’t give us the starting lineup, then we can at least look at his style of play. The Eagles look to be running a very quick, up-tempo offense. When they do run half court sets, the Eagles use a motion offense with lots of screening. Defensively, Coach Whitt has gotten away from the Kyle Macy philosophy of zone defense to his philosophy of straight up man-to-man defense. In fact, the Eagles did not employ a single zone all night long. The appealing aspect to this writer was the fact that the Eagles are employing the full-court man press after every basket.

The Eagles may have a rough first year considering that almost half of the roster is made up of freshmen, but after last season, the only direction the Eagles can go is up.

The fact that Oden is a pre-season All-American as a freshman bothers me.

            Looking good so far, man!

True, but he's a man amongst boys (he still looks like he's 30 instead of 18-19).

              Thanks for reading.

                South Alabama (1-3)

Mobile, AL (AP) – Point guard Brandon Callahan scored a game high 20 points while Shaun Williams recorded a double-double, scoring 18 points and grabbing 14 rebounds as the Morehead State Eagles upset the South Alabama Jaguars 66-60.

“I never imagined that we’d start the season 2-0,” said Jason Whitt. “It’s a product of the kids buying into the system. It’s a product of steady backcourt play. And it’s a product of steadfast defense and being a scrappy bunch.”

In a game that was back and forth for most of the game, it was the carelessness of South Alabama that sealed their fate, turning the ball over 18 times, including 6 unforced turnovers.

“We didn’t take care of the ball,” said John Pelphrey. “And when you don’t take care of the ball, you have games like tonight. We shot better from the field and we shot better from behind the arc. But our careless turnovers negated those advantages. We’re going to go home disappointed because this is a game we should’ve won.”

Demetric Bennett led the Jaguars (1-3) with 15 points.

Morehead, KY (AP) – Five players scored in double figures tonight for the East Tennessee State Buccaneers as they cruised to a 93-58 victory, ruining the mood of the crowd during the home opener of Morehead State at Ellis T. Johnson Arena.

“We couldn’t shoot the ball, we couldn’t hang on to the ball, so we didn’t deserve to win this game,” said a fired up Jason Whitt. “I think our fans should at least get their money back after watching that performance by our boys. I guarantee we’ll give them a better showing against Marshall next week.”

Quentin Pryor led the Eagles in scoring with 15 points, but on just 5 of 14 shooting. After two sub-par performance from Cordaryl Ballard, freshman forward Vincent Crutcher made his first start in his young collegiate career, but he’ll likely go back to the bench after his dismal 1 of 10 shooting performance tonight. Look for junior guard Jamyron Steward to get the start next week, after scoring 11 points off the bench tonight, as Coach Whitt looks for that fifth piece to step up in his starting five.

                    Morehead State (2-2)

Morehead, KY (AP) – Brandon Callahan scored a game high 23 points, but it wasn’t enough as the Morehead State Eagles faded down the stretch and lost 65-59 in overtime to the Marshall Thundering Herd Wednesday night at Ellis T. Johnson Arena.

“We simply ran out of gas there at the end,” said Coach Whitt. “We came out of the locker room fired up at halftime and we were able to get ourselves a decent lead. Then we came crashing back to earth from that high. Once our shots quit falling, it was over for us.”

The Eagles were able to force overtime after a trap in the corner caused a Marshall turnover and the Eagles converted the fast break opportunity. However, in overtime, the Eagles shot 2 for 11 from the field, sealing their fate.

The Thundering Herd had four players score in double figures, led by Tre Whitted’s 15 points.

After winning their first two games in surprising fashion, the Morehead State Eagles are coming back to earth, having lost their last two games. The problem has been consistency, especially at the small forward position. Whitt used his third different lineup of the year, and once again, a player who played well off the bench struggled when he entered the starting lineup.

The Eagles travel to Macomb, Illinois Saturday night to take on the Western Illinois Leathernecks.

                            Western Illinois (2-4)

Macomb, IL (AP) – Three players scored in double figures tonight for the Eagles, but for the second straight game, MSU faded late in the second half and dropped their third straight game, losing 72-65 to the Western Illinois Leathernecks.

“The shots that were falling for us in the first half and the first part of the second half quit falling for us late,” said Coach Whitt. “That’s a disheartening thing to watch, because Western Illinois never went on a quick scoring run. It was just our failure to hang on to the ball and to hit our shots that cost us this game.”

The Eagles had no answer for Leatherneck guard David Jackson, who carried his team tonight with 22 points and dishing out 7 assists. Chris Gonzalez chipped in 15 points.

The Eagles were led by Brandon Callahan, who scored 19 points. Quentin Pryor and Vincent Crutcher chipped in 16 and 15 points respectively.

The Eagles will have no time to rest next week, as they will open up OVC play next week with two home games against traditional OVC powers Austin Peay and Murray State.

Morehead, KY (AP) – The two headed attack of Brandon Callahan and Quentin Pryor combined for 30 points and 10 assists as the Morehead State Eagles used a second half surge to knock off the Austin Peay Governors 60-56, snapping their three game losing streak.

“This was a huge win for us, as Austin Peay has been a team that traditionally gives us trouble,” said Coach Whitt. “They along with Murray State have ended many hopeful tournament runs in this program's history. But, we can’t get too excited. We made a ton of mistakes in the first half, but I felt that when we started taking care of the ball in the second half, that we had a chance to beat this team.”

The Governors (2-3, 1-1 OVC) were led by guard Todd Babington, who scored 19 points, despite feeling the effects of a dislocated finger.

The Eagles (3-3, 1-0 OVC) will host the Murray State Racers Saturday night at Johnson Arena.
