Morehead, KY (AP) – Shaun Witherspoon proved he was the best player in the Ohio Valley Conference, leading the Murray State Racers (5-4, 3-0 OVC) with 24 points in rout to a 79-67 victory over the Morehead State Eagles.

Unfortunately for the Eagles (3-4, 1-1 OVC), not only did they lose the game tonight, but they lost their starting point guard. Junior guard Brandon Callahan broke his hand midway through the first half after falling awkwardly to the floor in a collision with Witherspoon, who was going in for a dunk on a fast break.

“It’s a huge blow to our team,” said Coach Whitt. “Brandon has been our most consistent player and he’s played great at the point this year. It’s a shame that injuries are a part of the game. But, one player doesn’t make a team, and we’ll continue to fight on without him in the lineup.”

The injury will keep Callahan out for 4-5 weeks. The Eagles do catch a break as they won’t enter the meat of their conference schedule until the first week of January, meaning Callahan will only miss six games at most.

While freshman Cecil Brown started the second half at the point, it was Quentin Pryor who finished the game at the position, and Coach Whitt said that Pryor would move to the point and Jamyron Steward would start at the two guard position for their next game against the Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks in nine days.

Martin, TN (AP) – Eagle fans were wondering how the team would rebound following the loss of junior point guard Brandon Callahan. It didn’t take long to find out. Jamyron Steward, who took Callahan’s spot in the lineup, erupted for 28 points as the Morehead State Eagles (4-4, 2-1 OVC) dominated the Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks 78-63.

“This was a nice rebound win for us after that Murray State game,” said Coach Whitt. “Steward had a great game shooting from the field and Quentin did a marvelous job of running the point. Still too many turnovers, but I’ll take the win.”

Tennessee-Martin (4-7, 1-2 OVC) was paced by guard George Pruitt, who scored 15 points.

The Eagles will look to continue their winning ways, as they wrap up this two game OVC road swing with a trip to Charleston, Illinois to meet the Eastern Illinois Panthers.

            Eastern Illinois (5-6, 2-3 OVC)

Charleston, IL (AP) – It was just one of those nights for Morehead.

The Eagles, probably feeling the effects of bus lag, shot a paltry 29% from the field as the Eastern Illinois Panthers defeated the Morehead State Eagles 54-43.

“We just simply didn’t hit our shots,” said Coach Jason Whitt. “When we don’t hit our shots, we can’t set up our press, and this allowed Eastern Illinois to get the pace of the game into their favor. They forced us into a half court game, and that’s simply not our style.”

“We just kept chucking shots over their zone defense. The greatest example of how bad a night we had shooting the ball was when Jamyron missed a three, and then Shaun Williams got the offensive rebound and missed the put back, and then Crutcher got the offensive rebound, and then he missed the put back, and then Pryor got an offensive rebound, and he missed the point blank shot, and then Williams got another rebound, and he couldn’t hit it. That sequence of events personified the type of night that we had. After this game, I can’t wait to get back to Morehead.”

Eastern Illinois was led by guard Julio Anthony, who scored a game high 22 points.

The Eagles will look to get back on track, as they host the Central Michigan Chippwewas from the Mid-American Conference at Johnson Arena next Saturday.

Morehead, KY (AP) – The Morehead State Eagles were looking to right their ship against the Central Michigan Chippewas following their dismal performance last week against conference foe Eastern Illinois. Unfortunately for the Eagles, another second half slide would visit them to the tune of a 15-4 run to close the game out for the Chippewas, as they defeated the Eagles 68-65 in front of a (very) small crowd at Johnson Arena.

“You have to remember that we are a very young team,” Coach Whitt reminded the local media. “When almost half the roster is made up of freshmen, you know you’re going to have growing pains. You have to learn how to win at this level. We’re getting better, but we’re still not there.”

The Eagles were led by junior guard Jamyron Steward, who scored 14 points. Vincent Crutcher chipped in 10 points. Shaun Williams fell one rebound shy of recording his third double-double on the season.

The Chippewas were led by point guard Giordan Watson, who scored a game-high 16 points. Guard Eddie Spencer chipped in 11 points. Marko Spicer led the team with 13 boards.

With the loss to Central Michigan, the Eagles closed out their out of conference schedule by going 2-4. After a promising start with upsets of Penn State and South Alabama on the road, the Eagles have fallen back to earth. They were competitive in three of those four losses, and one has to assume that soon, those close losses will turn into close wins. Only time will tell.

Next week, the Eagles will host two conference home games against Tennessee State and Tennessee Tech. Odds makers have established the Eagles underdogs in both games despite the home court advantage.

Morehead, KY (AP) – Quentin Pryor led the Morehead State Eagles tonight with 14 points, but it wasn’t enough as the Tennessee State Tigers defeated the Morehead State Eagles 79-64 at Johnson Arena. The Tigers are one of only four teams in the conference with a winning record, and they showed why tonight.

“They simply outclassed us,” said Coach Whitt. “We simply weren’t prepared for that first half. We played better in the second half, which has been our Achilles’ heel all season. We can take some good things from this game, but it’s still a loss.”

Shaun Williams chipped in 12 points and combined with Dan Penick for 18 of the team’s 26 rebounds. Vincent Crutcher chipped in 10 points as well.

The Tigers were led by guard Bruce Price, who scored a game high 20 points. Point guard Reiley Ervin chipped in 18 points while swingman Jerell Houston scored 12 and grabbed 7 boards.

                  Morehead State (5-7, 3-3 OVC)

Morehead, KY (AP) – The Morehead State Eagles had four players finish in double figures, led by Quentin Pryor’s 18 points as the Eagles defeated the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles 79-67 to snap their second three game losing streak on the season.

“I think we grew up a bit tonight, “said a happy Coach Whitt. “There late in the half, Tennessee Tech was on a run and had cut our lead to single digits. I could see it in the guys eyes that they were thinking ‘Oh no, not again!’ I called a time out and told them that today is a new day and don’t go out there thinking about our prior second half collapses. We come out of the timeout and Jamyron nailed that three and we held them off. I think this win will give us a lot of confidence.”

Pryor had a double-double tonight, dishing out 10 assists to go along with his 18 points.

The Golden Eagles were led by guard Belton Rivers, who scored a game high 21 points. Forward Amadi McKenzie collected a game high ten boards. The Golden Eagles were held back tonight by their 20 turnovers, which to several easy scoring opportunities tonight for the Eagles.

Next week, the Eagles will split their two conference games home and away. The Eagles travel to Richmond, KY to take on the rival Eastern Kentucky Colonels. The Eagles will then host the Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks at Johnson Arena. In their previous meeting, the Eagles won 76-63.

In injury news, guard Jamyron Steward suffered a sprained wrist during the first half of the game. Steward came back in the second half with the wrist heavily taped. He’s officially listed as day to day. Meanwhile, point guard Brandon Callahan will return next week, though Coach Whitt will likely hold him out of the game against EKU. It will be interesting who Whitt will drop out of the starting lineup with the return of Callahan.

                      Eastern Kentucky (7-6, 4-3 OVC)

Richmond, KY (AP) – It started out as a close contested game between rivals, but after the Eagles went on a 25-4 run midway through the first half, it became a rout. Swingman Vincent Crutcher scored a game high 22 points, including four three pointers, as the Morehead State Eagles defeated the Eastern Kentucky Colonels 63-46 at McBrayer Arena.

“This was a big win for us tonight, “said Coach Whitt. “To come into a hostile environment like this against a team that is comparable to us, and then just blow them out like, shows a lot about your team. Games against teams like that show where you are in the conference pecking order. I may have pulled the first team a little too early when EKU went on that run in the second half, but a timeout and putting the first team back in put a stop to that.”

The Colonels cut the Eagles lead to single digits in the second half after going on a 24-5 run, but failed to score a single basket in the final seven minutes of the game.

In injury news, point guard Brandon Callahan will make his return to the starting lineup against Tennessee-Martin. There has been talk that with the emergence of both Jamyron Steward and Vincent Crutcher in Callahan’s absence, that Coach Whitt will move Dan Penick out of the starting lineup. Whitt was noncommittal when asked this question during the post game news conference.

Morehead, KY (AP) – After a slow start, the Morehead State Eagles used tenacious defense to pull away from the Tennessee Martin Skyhawks 70-55 Saturday night in Johnson Arena. In his first game back for the Eagles since breaking his hand against Murray Stare back on December 9th, Brandon Callahan scored a game high 15 points and dished out 7 assists as the Eagles debuted a new three guard look tonight.

“I wanted to keep Steward and Crutcher in the lineup together,” said Coach Whitt in explaining the move. “It’s no knock against Dan (Penick) as he’s been a solid big man for us this year as a freshman. But I felt that this new lineup can give us more scoring opportunities. Now we got off to a slow start, but I felt that our defensive pressure was simply too much for UT-Martin.”

Guard George Pruitt led the Skyhawks with 11 points.

Next week, the Eagles will hit the road for a two game OVC road trip in Alabama, as they will visit the Samford Bulldogs and the Jacksonville State Gamecocks.

                            Samford (6-11, 3-6 OVC)

Homewood, AL (AP) – Shaun Williams scored a game-high 16 points and grabbed 8 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough as the Morehead State Eagles caught a hot shooting night from the Samford Bulldogs, who pulled out the 73-48 victory over the Eagles at Seibert Hall.

“It was just one of those games,” said Coach Whitt. “In the first half, we shot the ball well, but they came out in a 3-2 zone and we forced too many bad passes. In the second half, we cut out the turnovers and started to beat their zone, but then the shots quit falling. Samford was torching the nets tonight, and when a team is doing that, you have to get yourself extra possessions, you need to get a contribution from your bench, and you need to get to the line. We utterly failed at all of those aspects tonight.”

Junior center Travis Peterson led the Bulldogs with 14 points and 7 rebounds.

Jacksonville, AL (AP) – The Morehead State Eagles have proven that they are only consistent at being inconsistent. That has been the case from game to game. Shoot, it’s the case from minute to minute. A slow start, a big run, allowing a big run; it’s pretty much been the staple of this young team all year. Tonight was no exception.

Quentin Pryor led all scorers with 17 points, but it wasn’t enough as the Jacksonville State Gamecocks used a late 17-5 run to pull ahead of the Eagles for good, winning 70-66 at Pete Mathews Coliseum.

“These are the type of games that just drive a coach crazy,” said Coach Whitt. “We come out of the gates slow, then with five minutes left in the half, we get hot, and that carries over into the second half. Then we crash into the wall at about the ten minute mark. But when a team scores 16 second chance points, you deserve to get beat. They didn’t have a size advantage on us. They just simply out hustled us on the boards.”

Junior point guard Will Ginn led the Gamecocks with 17 points, including the big mid range jump shot in the face of Brandon Callahan when the Eagles pulled to within two with a minute to go.

Next week, the Eagles return to Johnson Arena, where they will host the Southeast Missouri State Redhawks and the Eastern Illinois Panthers. It will be the first meeting against the Redhawks this year. The Eagles lost to the Panthers 54-43 in their previous meeting.
