Re: 2007 New York Yankees (MVP 05)

Good stuff so far. Good luck in Game 5.

I lost 3-1 to the Tribe in my first season in the ALDS, Sabathia is a tough to hit. I couldn't hit anyone on their staff for that matter. A-Rod hit .087 for the series I believe.

I'm going to restart my dynasty tonight though, gotta get the Rocket on the roster.

      ALDS Game 5
Cleveland (Sabathia) at New York (Mussina)

They say pitching and defense wins championships. Thankfully for the Yankees, this was only the ALDS. The Yankees made 3 errors, and gave up 6 runs on 14 hits, but their offense was able to overcome it, and pull out a 9-6 victory.

The Yankees took a 9-5 lead into the 9th, and appeared to have the game won with Rivera coming in. The Indians rallied however, scoring 1 run, and putting runners on 1st and 3rd with 2 outs with Ryan Garko up at bat. Here's John Sterling with the call:

"The 1-1 from Rivera is....swung on and belted to deep right....it is high....it is far...it is...CAUGHT BY ABREU! GARKO CAME WITHIN INCHES OF TYING THIS GAME BUT ABREU MADE A GREAT CATCH CRASHING INTO THE WALL. BALL GAME OVER......AMERICAN LEAGUE DIVISIONAL SERIES OVER....YANKEES WIN.....THAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA YANKEES WIN!!!!!!"

Abreu makes a game saving catch crashing into the wall.

The Mariners came back from 2-0 down against the Red Sox, so the ALCS will be a rematch of the 2000 and 2001 ALCS, Yankees vs. Mariners.

The NLCS is what everyone predicted before the season started, the Brewers vs. Nationals.

        ALCS Game 1
Seattle (Redman) at New York (Wang)

An 8th inning Jose Vidro homerun off of Kyle Farnsworth lifted the Mariners to a surprising game 1 victory, 5-4 over the Yankees.

Early on it looked like this game would be all about offense. Adrian Beltre hit a 3 run homer in the top of the first, but Yankee 3rd baseman Alex Rodriguez answered with a 3 run homerun of his own in the bottom of the first.

In the 6th Johjima hit an RBI triple on a misplaced ball my Matsui, giving the Mariners a 4-3 lead. Derek Jeter answeredin the bottom of the 7th with a solo homer. But in the top of the 8th Vidro put one in the right field upperdeck, and the Mariners bullpen did the rest, as Lowe and Putz came on to shutdown the Yankees, wrapping up the game 1 win.

          ALCS Game 2
Seattle (Washburn) at New York (Pettitte)

The Yankees got the big start they needed from Andy Pettitte in game 2, but unfortunately for them their offense didn't come through. Jered Washburn surrendered only one un-earned run over 7 innings, outdueling Andy Pettitte, a big part of the Mariners 3-2 10 inning victory.

Yankees got on the board first in the 5th on an RBI single by Alex Rodriguez. But the Mariners would answer back in the 7th when Andy Pettitte made his one big mistake of the game and pinch hitter Jose Guillen turned on it and hit it over the left center field wall. It was a 2 run homer, giving the Mariners a 2-1 lead.

Yankees battled back in the 9th though, as Putz had trouble finding the strikezone, he loaded the bases with nobody out for Johnny Damon. Damon struck out, but then Jeter lined a game tying single into rightfield. The Mariners had to bring the infield and outfield in but Bobby Abreu bailed them out swining at the first pitch and popping up to shallow left. A-Rod brought the crowd to it's feet, lining one the opposite deep down the right field line, but Ichiro ran it down on the track.

In the 10th, Jose Vidro put the Mariners ahead for good, with an rbi single to left field, scoring Richie Sexson who just beat the Hideki Matsui throw. Sexson was one of the stars of the game with 4 singles and a walk.

The Yankees got a runner on 2nd base in the bottom of the 10th, but Putz got pinch hitter Bernie Williams to pop out, ending the game.

The Mariners have a commanding 2-0 lead in the series with King Felix going in game 3 against Mike Mussina.

            ALCS Game 3
New York (Mussina) at Seattle (Hernandez)

In the top of the 8th inning, with the Yankees leading 4-0, Doug Minkievitxfsfwsaf hit a deep fly ball to the right field wall. Ichiro went back to the wall, timed his jump perfectly, and made a leaping catch robbing the Yankees of a 2 run homerun. At the time, it looked pretty meaningless, as Mike Mussina was crusing along, allowing only 3 baserunners so far. But it ended up being a huge part of the game as the Mariners rallied for 3 in the 8th and 2 in the 9th, and are now only one win away from a trip to the world series.

Yankees jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 3rd on a Bobby Abreu sacrifice fly. They extended that lead to 3-0 in the 3rd on a 2 run double, again by Abreu. Then, in the top of the 8th, Jason Giambi added an insurance run with a solo home run.

But the Mariners rallied. It started with a solo homer by Lopez. The Mariners then bunched together a few hits, and scored 2 more runs off Mussina, one thanks to a throwing error by Johnny Damon. Kyle Farnsworth came in and stopped the bleeding, getting Raul Ibanez to ground into a double play, and the Yankees still hung on to a 4-3 lead heading into the 9th.

But in a big sign that this just isn't the Yankees year, Mariano Rivera gave up the game. The first pitch he threw was hit over the centerfield wall by Richie Sexson, tying the game. Rivera then got 2 easy outs, and got an 0-2 count on Johjima. He tried to throw an outside cutter to Johjima but it got too much of the plate, and it was hit for a walkoff homerun, giving the Mariners a commanding 3-0 lead in the series.

                ALCS Game 4
New York (Wang) at Seattle (Weaver)

The desperate Yankees handed the ball over to Wang on 3 days rest, and he did not dissapoint. Wang went 6.2 innings, giving up only 1 run which came on a Jeter throwing error, 1 of the 3 Yankee errors in the game. This time the bullpen did it's job, and the Yankees stayed alive thanks to a 2-1 victory.

The Yankees had RBI singles from both Bobby Abreu and Robinson Cano. They had a 2-0 in the 7th, when the Mariners put runners on 1st and 2nd with 2 outs for Ichiro. Ichiro hit a slow roller to Jeter that would have been an infield hit, but Jeter threw to first anyway, overthrowing first base and allowing a run to score. Chris Britton came on and got them out of the inning however, and he pitched a scoreless 8th as well. Rivera came on in the 9th, and rebounded from his struggles this series to pitch an easy perfect 9th.

                  ALCS Game 5
New York (Pettitte) at Seattle (Redman)

The Yankees brought Andy Pettitte back to New York mostly because he is a guy who has come up huge in the playoffs for them time and time again. He did it again in game 5, and because of it this series is going back to New York.

Pettitte pitched a complete game, giving up only 1 run on 6 hits. The one run was a bases loaded walk, the only serious trouble Pettitte was in all game. Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez provided the offense, as Jeter hit a 3 run homer, and A-Rod added a solo shot late in the game to make it 4-1, and that would be the final.

                  Mariners lead series 3-2.

                    Nice.

Speaking of clutch Yankee postseason pitchers, where is El Duque when you need him for Game 6?

                        ALCS Game 6
Seattle (Washburn) at New York (Mussina)

After getting good to great pitching all series, the Yankees streak ran out, and as a result their season came to an end in a 12-6 loss.

The Mariners pounded out 15 hits and 6 homeruns. All 4 Yankee pitchers gave up at least 1. The big blow was a 3 run homerun by Ichiro off of Phil Hughes, breaking a 5-5 tie.

Despite the Yankees terrible pitching, the Mariners did their best to lose the game. They surrendered a mind blowing 24 baserunners, 12 on walks and 12 on hits, but they Yankees turned that into only 6 runs. They put multiple runners on base every inning, but just could not string together a really big rally.

The Mariners went on to defeat the Nationals in the world series.
