                      Schilling: "This isn't over"
Red Sox ace vows to send ALCS back to Boston

                      October 14, 2007

ANAHEIM, CA - One day after flipping the script and rallying to tie Game 4 of the ALCS only to lose in extra innings, the Boston Red Sox are done monkeying around with the Los Angeles Angels.

Hours before Game 5, during the pregame press conferences, Red Sox lightning rod for controversy/pitcher Curt Schilling, the Game 5 starter, promised he and the rest of the team would be returning to Boston after the game - with the Angels in tow.

"No way in hell is this over. You guys know that, I mean come on...We've been in tighter spots than this. You kiddin' me? This isn't over. Not even close," Schilling quipped to the media, referencing the 2004 ALCS, where the Red Sox came back from 3-0 down to beat the Yankees in Game 7.

One of the keys to that comeback though, was David Ortiz, who has been a noshow in this year's LCS. In the first four games, Big Papi is batting .188 (3-16) with no homeruns, no RBI, and 7 strikeouts.

He realizes it's his time, too.

"I know the numbers. It's time to step it up, because it's do or die now. Time to go to work," Ortiz told the media shortly after Schilling's comments.

To get the job done, the bats must come to life - but the brakes must be put on Gary Matthews, Jr., as well. Since Vlad Guerrero's enormous Game 1, the Red Sox have clamped down on him, holding him to 2-12 with a single homerun in the first inning of Game 2. Matthews however, has pestered and punished them without hinderance, batting .353 (6-17) with 3 homeruns and 8 RBI. He has almost single-handedly won the last two games; his 2-run double in Game 3 scored the only runs for LA their 2-1 win, and after robbing Kevin Youkilis of a homerun and doubling home the go-ahead run in the 6th inning of Game 4, he won it with a solo homerun in the 11th.

"Matthews is hot for them, obviously. But they've got guys in their lineup that can hurt you if you focus in on one guy," Schilling commented. "What's my plan? Stop them all."

Lifetime in Game 5s, Schilling is 2-0 with a 0.69 ERA in 3 starts. He has never lost a postseason game with his team facing elimination.

Beckett looks to continue mastery of postseason
Red Sox 3rd ace has brilliant history in closeout games

BOSTON, MA - On a staff that features Curt Schilling and Roger Clemens, it says something that Terry Francona has placed his faith in Josh Beckett in tonight's finale of the American League Championship Series.

That faith is probably well placed, though. In 7 career postseason starts (5 with Florida in 2003, 2 with Boston this postseason), Beckett has a record of only 3-3, but an ERA of 1.84, with 59 strikeouts.

More importantly, in elimination games (whether for his team or with his team on the brink), Beckett has been essentially perfect.

                              2003 NLCS Game 5 (Marlins trailing Cubs 3-1): CG, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 11 K
                              2003 World Series Game 6 (Marlins leading Yankees 3-2): CG, 5 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 9 K
                              2007 ALDS Game 4 (Red Sox leading Twins 2-0): CG, 3 H, 0 R, 6 K
                              Total: 3-0, 27.0 IP, 10 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 26 K

"I know what's expected of me," Beckett told the fevered Boston media today. "This is what it's all about; it doesn't get much better than being the starting pitcher for the Boston Red Sox in a Game 7 at Fenway Park."

Angels hope their youngster can weave a gem
For Weaver, this could be the start of a legacy

BOSTON, MA - There are no stats to look back on to indicate how Jered Weaver might perform tonight, obviously, since this is his first postseason.

The only thing to look at is how he's done this postseason, and he's actually done rather well. In 12.0 innings, he's given up 12 hits,3 runs and struck out 13, for an ERA of 2.25. He has yet to pick up a decision though.

Like Beckett though, he knows what an opportunity this is.

"This is just about as big as it gets for a baseball player. Every pitcher wants to be the guy to take the mound in a Game 7. Confidence is a huge part of succeeding at this level as a pitcher, and right now my confidence is sky high. I'm just gonna go out there and do my job. That's all there is to it."
