                Epstein busy on the market
Red Sox GM looks for the right moves

                July 11, 2007

BOSTON, MA - The Red Sox are 20 games over .500 and 7 games ahead of the Yankees in the AL East, as the unofficial second half of the season gets ready to begin, with Boston sending out its four best pitchers - Roger Clemens, Curt Schilling, Josh Beckett and Daisuke Matsuzaka - for a four game series vs. Toronto at Fenway starting tomorrow.

But ever observant GM Theo Epstein is troubled. Within the past 3 weeks, the Red Sox have been swept in both San Diego and Detroit, leaving many wondering if this Red Sox team has what it takes to succeed in the playoffs against real contenders.

To that end, Epstein has spent the past 3-4 days talking on the phone non-stop to GMs around Major League Baseball. The main subject has been Tim Wakefield. The 40-year old knuckleballer is 2-9 with the Red Sox, but, if packaged with other players, could be a valuable trading chip. Epstein has young players in the minors such as pitchers Kason Gabbard, Devern Hansack and Jon Lester, along with position players like Ed Rogers that could possibly be used as bait. Epstein is hesitant to move any of the young guys, but if the right deal comes along, it may be too good to pass up.

When pressed for comment regarding Wakefield, skipper Terry Francona was stand offish, but he did say that at this point Wakefield is not scheduled to pitch July 16 vs. Kansas City, leading many to speculate that a deal could and is expected to be finalized before then.

The ASG is a fraud, Gary "HGH" Matthews Jr. is allowed to play, and then hits a homer? Awful.

Have fun finding someone to receive Wakefield. :y4:

                      Epstein pulls the trigger
Red Sox trade Wakefield to Mets

                      July 13, 2007

BOSTON, MA - This was a move that was the exact opposite of Tim Wakefield's patented unpredictable knuckleball.

The Red Sox parted with 40-year old pitcher Tim Wakefield today, sending him to the New York Mets in exchange for left handed pitcher Oliver Perez. The Red Sox also sent AAA relief pitcher Enoch Mills and AA utilty man Felton Bates to the Mets, receiving AAA/AA relief pitcher Ricky Justice in the deal as well.

"I want all parties involved to realize that this was not an easy decision to make. Tim Wakefield's service with the Red Sox will not be forgotten. I don't think there is a player, coach, executive or fan of Red Sox Nation that does not appreciate what Tim Wakefield has done for this organization. But in the end I, and Tim, felt it was best for both sides if we part ways," the Red Sox GM said in his press conference.

Wakefield leaves the Red Sox after 12+ years on the team. In that time he compiled a 139-131 record.

Perez comes to the Red Sox looking for possibly his last chance to save his career. He was a promising young star for the Pirates years ago, but has always had control issues. He was 3-6 for the Mets this year with a 4.57 ERA before they sent him down to their AAA affiliate. He will fill in Boston's last slot in their rotation.

With the trade deadline still a couple weeks away, Epstein also hinted that the Red Sox may also still be on the watch for a new bat in the lineup.

"I think we can win a championship the way we are now, but I'm definitely going to keep listening and making phone calls over the next two weeks."

I can't believe someone actually took Wakefield.

Perez used to be dirty in MVP, he should be fun to use.
