Loretto, PA- Today the University of Saint Francis have announced their new head coach after an abysmal 4-26 record for the 2005-2006 campaign. "It was inexcusable to have such a poor showing last year after competing in the Northeast conference with a 15-13 record just the year before," said the Athletic Director. Taking the helm is former Coach of Conestoga High School, Brian Bass. Even though hiring someone at the age of 25 and with no coaching experience of college, the Athletic Director seemed pleased by his performance at Conestoga High School. "After just 3 years of coaching there, he was able to win districts twice and took them to the semifinals in states just last year. He was also able to beat arch rival Strath Haven after 13 straight years of losing to them. That really impressed me." The hiring of a new coach couldn't have come any sooner. Their season kickoff scrimmage is scheduled for next week and this team needs a lot of work.

Saint Francis hold off St. Bonaventure to win Season Opener!

Devin Sweentney goes in for a dunk to seal the fate of the Bonnies

Loretto, PA - The Saint Francis Red Flash have gotten off to a good start this season by defeating the St. Bonaventure Bonnies by a score of 68-59. Much of the reason why they were able to receive their first victory was their performance in the first half. After a 6-0 start by St. Bonaventure, the Red Flash went on a 15-2 run and never looked back.

Grant Suprenant nails one of his three pointers in the first half

Leading the way was #30 Grant Suprenant who ended up shooting 3-6 from 3 point range and 18 points overall. "I was a little worried with our ability to shoot from the outside, but Grant came up huge and I'm starting to feel better about our chances this year," said Coach Bass. The Red Flash are off till Saturday when they will face state rival Lasalle.

La Salle shoots lights out to thump Saint Francis

Darnell Harris shoots one of many open jumpers

Loretto, PA - The in state battle between the Explorers and Red Flash ended up being a clinic by La Salle. La Salle shot 65% from the floor and gave Saint Francis's first lost of the season. "We did a poor job on defense. It's that simple. We gave them way too much space on the floor and didn't pressure them at all. But I also have to give credit to them for making all those shots. They have a very talented underrated team over there and the Atlantic 10 I have a feeling is going to be in for a surprise," said Coach Bass. Saint Francis does not have much time to resolve any defensive issues for they only have one day off before they are back at it on Monday against Howard University.

Saint Francis comeback out of reach

Jason Trotter puts in one of his two offensive rebounds

Loretto, PA - Saint Francis suffered its 2nd straight loss of the season against the Howard Bison Monday night. Poor defense seemed to be the reasoning behind the loss once again as Howard shot 30-58 from the floor and was able to get to the line 18 times. Coach Bass was later questioned about the Red Flash's struggles defensive wise. "It's the 3rd game of the season. There's no need to make a drastic change. It was our 2nd game in 3 days and it was our first road game of the year. We'll be fine we just have a little bump in the journey right now." Saint Francis will once again only have one day off before returning home to face Mid Major power Bucknell. "Bucknell has lots of NCAA Tournament experience and this will be a true test to our team. It should be interesting," said Coach Bass.

                  Saint Francis pulls off Upset!

Grant Suprenant celebrates after draining a three pointer

Loretto, PA - Not many would've believed that the Red Flash could possibly beat Bucknell. Now add in the fact that it was their 3rd game in 5 days and this feat seems nearly impossible. But Wednesday night the Red Flash dominated Bucknell 38-22 in the first half and held on to walk away victorious. "I'm very proud of the team tonight. We shot the ball well and made every shot from the free throw line. We are also progressing defensive wise and we are all starting to help each other out. It was a great team effort," said Coach Bass. Sophmore guard Grand Suprenant led the way with 23 points shooting 9-15 from the field. "He's certainly a very important factor in how we do each night. I'm very excited to see how well he does this season and in the years to come." The Red Flash will have a much needed 4 days off before returning to action December 4th @ Liberty.
