2007 World Series Game 5 (NYY @ PHI) R. Clemens vs. F. Garcia

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Every great series has a defining moment. One classic game, a "one for the ages" game that you'll always remember. Game 5 may well be exactly that for the 2007 World Series.

The Phillies won a wild game, 4-3, placing them just one victory away from their first World Series crown in 27 years.

In a rematch of Game 1's starters, the Yankees struck first off Freddy Garcia on Jason Giambi's RBI single in the first. It was Giambi's first RBI and only his second hit of the World Series.

A Hideki Matsui HR made it 2-0 in the 3rd but the Fightin' Phils struck back with two runs of their own in the 4th to tie the game. The Phillies took the lead in the 7th on a Ryan Howard solo HR to center field.

Leading 3-2 going into the ninth the Phillies called on closer, and former Yankee, Tom Gordon. Gordon got Matsui to line out and Giambi to strike out on a nasty off-speed pitch.

Down to the field out, Jorge Posada stepped to the plate. He fouled off the first two pitches, then worked the count to 2-2. On the next pitch Gordon threw an inside slider that Posada managed to get good wood on, the ball seemed to hang in the air forever until it landed in the seats just past the outstretched glove of Phillie right-fielder Shane Victorino. Following Posada, Bobby Abreu singled and Robinson Cano doubled leaving men on 2nd and 3rd w. two outs and Melky Cabrera at the plate. However, Gordon escaped further damage as Cabrera lined out to short.

In the bottom of the inning the Yankees once again called on rookie Joba Chamberlain. Chase Utley lead off the inning with a double to left-center. He was then moved to 3rd with out on a sac fly. With 1 out and first base open, the Yankees elected to pitch to Pat Burrell - Chamberlain fanned him on four pitches. Next up was Wes Helms, who Chamberlain quickly got ahead 0-2 on. After fouling off several low-and-away pitches, Chamberlain tried a backdoor slider on a 2-2 count and Helms lined it to CF for the game winner.

Off-Day Report

NEW YORK (AP) - The New York Yankees are back in the Bronx, licking their wounds and preparing to fight for their lives in tomorrow night's Game 6 at the Stadium.

The Philadelphia Phillies are one game away from winning their first World Series in 27 years, while the Yanks are trying to win both games and win their 27th world title.

Veteran lefty Andy Pettitte will take the ball for the Bombers against lefty Jamie Moyer, who hurled a complete game 3-hit shutout in Game 2 at the Stadium.

The Yankees have struggled against left-handed pitching all year, as seen in this series as they have just one run scored in 18 innings against LHP, an Alex Rodriguez home run.

Joe Torre has announced that Jose Cruz Jr, a switch-hitter, will start in right field in Game 6 while Bobby Abreu will sit. Abreu is hitting .208 in the post season, without a single hit against LHP.

The Yanks reward if they can beat Moyer tomorrow night? The other lefty who shut them down in Game 3, young fireballer Cole Hamels, will start Game 7.

2007 World Series Game 6 (PHI @ NYY): J. Moyer vs A. Pettitte

NEW YORK (AP) - It wasn't quite Reggie Jackson, but Robinson Cano was close, and just as clutch.

It was exactly 30 years ago tonight, when Reggie Jackson slugged three home runs in Game 6 of the 1977 World Series to lead the Yankees to their first World Series title in 15 years.

In Game 6 of the 2007 World Series, Cano gave his best Jackson impersonation by crushing two clutch home runs in leading the Yankees to a dramatic 4-3 win and force Game 7.

With newfound nemisis Jamie Moyer baffling the Yankees once again, Cano came to the plate with two outs in the bottom of the 6th and the Yankees trailing 3-0. Derek Jeter had just broken up Moyer's no-hit bid with a double to the gap in right center. Then Cano, who was hitting just .218 entering Game 6, got an inside change up from Moyer and blasted it into the upper deck in right, bringing the Yankees close at 3-2.

Moyer was lifted at the start of the eighth inning in favor of Brett Meyers. Down to their final six outs, Robinson Cano dug in. The first pitch Meyers threw was a low-and-in two-seam fastball and Cano pummeled it, even higher and farther than his first homer. When the ball landed in the upper deck in right, the Stadium was shaking down to it's foundation.

It would only get louder two batters later, when Hideki Matsui followed suit and launched a two-out solo homer of his own to give the Yanks a 4-3 lead.

Mariano Rivera quickly got loose, came into the game and slammed the door in the 9th.

2007 World Series Game 7 (PHI @ NYY): C. Hamels vs C. Wang

NEW YORK (AP) - Start spreading the news. The New York Yankees are back on top of the baseball world. The Bronx Bombers crushed the Philadelphia Phillies 12-3 in Game 7, an anti-climatic finish to an outstanding and closely played series.

The Yankees got three-run home runs from Johnny Damon and Hideki Matsui as the Bombers scored four times in the 2nd and six times in the 4th to blow the game open early.

Young lefty Cole Hamels lasted just 3 1/3 innings and gave up 10 earned runs on 10 hits. He walked three as well. It was a far cry from the 8-inning, 1 run masterpiece he tossed in Game 3 in Philadelphia.

Chien-Ming Wang, who Joe Torre elected to start despite it being Phil Hughes turn in the rotation, scattered three runs and seven hits over 7 solid innings.

It is the Yankees first World Series championship since 2000 and their 27th overall. The Yankees had lost the last two World Series they were in (2001, 2003).

For Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Jorge Posada and Andy Pettitte it is their 5th World Series victory as members of the New York Yankees.
