What you need to know: Could everyone please stay healthy so we can see what the offense can do? Eight starters return, along with many others with starting experience, but it'll be the ones who weren't a part of the mix throughout all of last year, QB Kevin O'Connell and RB Lynell Hamilton, who'll need to make the offense sing after it finished averaging a woeful 14.17 points per game. Even if they don't backup quarterback Kevin Craft and a host of running backs are good enough to bring more production. The receivers are big and fast, the combination of running backs are big and fast, and O'Connell is big and fast. The line should be fine with plenty of returning experience, so now there has to be real, live production.

Star of the offense: Senior QB Kevin O'Connell
Player that has to step up and become a star: Senior RB Lynell Hamilton
Unsung star on the rise: Senoir WR Chaz Schilens
                      Best pro prospect: Hamilton
                      Top three all-star candidates: 1) O'Connell, 2) Hamilton, 3) WR Brett Swain
                      Strength of the offense: Backfield
Weakness of the offense: Offensive line

QB – Kevin O’Connell (SR, 87 Ovr), Darren Moughey (JR, 86 Ovr), Kevin Craft (SO, 75 Ovr), Ryan Lindley (FR, 66 Ovr)
HB – Brandon Bornes (SR, 87 Ovr), Lynell Hamilton (SR, 86 Ovr), Atiyyah Henderson (SO, 82 Ovr), Tyler Campbell (JR, 84 Ovr)
FB – Josh Ulibarri (JR, 80 Ovr)
WR – Chaz Schilens (SR, 87 Ovr), Brett Swain (SR, 85 Ovr), DeMarco Sampson (SO, 82 Ovr), Jon Toledo (SO, 79 Ovr), Marcus Montgomery (JR, 78 Ovr), Mekell Wesley (SO, 77 Ovr), Roberto Wallace (SO, 75 Ovr), Vincent Brown (FR, 66 Ovr)
TE – Lance Louis (JR, 88 Ovr), Eric Rouser (JR, 84 Ovr), Waika Spencer (SO, 83 Ovr), Eric Miclot (JR, 82 Ovr), Steve Schmidt (SR, 82 Ovr)
LT – William Robinson (SR, 89 Ovr), Jimmie Carmack (FR, 68 Ovr)
LG – Johnathan Callaway (SO, 78 Ovr), Ikaika Aken Moleta (SO, 71 Ovr), Mike Matamua (FR, 64 Ovr)
C – Peter Manuma (SR, 78 Ovr), Trask Iosefa (FR, 68 Ovr)
RG – Brandyn Dombrowski (SR, 86 Ovr), Mike Schmidt (JR, 77 Ovr), Jason Alexander (JR, 70 Ovr)
RT – Dan Hathaway (JR, 80 Ovr), Mike Kravetz (SR, 75 Ovr)

What you need to know: Uh oh. Four starters return from a defense that struggled with its consistency throughout the year and did nothing to get into the backfield. That was with Antwan Applewhite, who left a year early. The outside linebackers, Russell Allen and Brett Martin, are the strength of the defense, Ray Bass is a solid, veteran safety, while Nick Osborn is a good, versatile lineman who'll start out at tackle after playing last year at end. That's about it for the sure-things. The corner situation is a mess, there's no pass rusher to count on, and the overall depth will be an issue.

Star of the defense: Junior LB Russell Allen
Player that has to step up and become a star: All the defensive ends
Unsung star on the rise: Sophomore LB Luke Laolagi
                      Best pro prospect: Allen
Top three all-star candidates: 1) Allen, 2) LB Brett Martin, 3) DT Nick Osborn
Strength of the defense: Outside linebacker, tackle
Weakness of the defense: Cornerback, pass rush

LE – Brian Stanbra (JR, 80 Ovr), Siaosi Fifta (JR, 79 Ovr), Eron Moses (FR, 65 Ovr), Michael Snead (FR, 62 Ovr)
RE – Nick Osborn (SR, 84 Ovr), Tony DeMartinis (SO, 81 Ovr), Avery Williams (SO, 79 Ovr)
DT – Fredrick Amano (SR, 78 Ovr), Oman Nwansi (SR, 74 Ovr), Peter Nelson (SO, 7 Ovr), Jonathan Soto (SO, 71 Ovr)
LOLB – Russell Allen (JR, 85 Ovr), Marc Hull (SR, 77 Ovr), Luke Laolagi (SO, 69 Ovr)
MLB – Jerry Milling (SO, 77 Ovr), Ted Edwards (SR, 73 Ovr), Miles Burris (FR, 68 Ovr)
ROLB – Bret Martin (SR, 81 Ovr), Freddy Dunkle (SR, 77 Ovr)

San Diego State Aztecs (0-0) vs. Washington State Cougars(0-1)
                        Qwest Field
                        Seattle, Washington
                        Saturday Sept, 8, 2007

San Diego, CA – Aztec’s 26, Cougars 21 is what the final score ended up but it was a much closer game then the 5 points indicated. And it wasn’t until the final whistle had blown that the winner could celebrate, that’s how close this game was.

San Diego State got their first win of the season with a nail biting 26-21 victory over Pac 10 cellar dweller’s the Washington State Cougars in a game that could have gone either way especially in the final minutes of the game. A 2 Yard run by Brandon Bourns with only 25 seconds remaining in the game gave the Aztecs a their 3rd lead of the game but this time they where looking to not blow it, especially so close to the end of the game.

Washington State came within 13 Yards of snatching the Victory and had it not been for some outstanding defense from Jerry Milling and Scotty James, the Cougars could have very well snatched the game from under the Aztecs once again, but it wasn’t to be as the Aztecs held on to win 26-21.

Kevin O’Connell threw for 2 Touchdowns in the game both to Tightend Lance Louis and Brandon Bornes also scored what would prove to be the game winner for the Aztecs in the 4th Quarter.

Alex Brink led the Cougars with 215 Yards and 2 Touchdowns while Dwight Tardy rushed for a game high 123 Yards but he failed to find the endzone.
San Diego State travel to Arizona State next week and look to improve to 2-0 on the season.

                        1st Quarter:
