I've been a Red Sox fan since I was 5 or 6 when my dad got me a Red Sox hat. At the time, I had no favorite team, so I started liking them and have liked them ever since.

As for Jeff Gordon, I've liked him since birth. My dad was a big NASCAR fan, so I always watched the races even when I was like 1 or 2. I've been a Jeff Gordon fan since birth.

As I said before, I am liking this!

Just kidding with ya.

I used to watch the old, and I do mean old, Winston Cup races on ABC when they had their "Wide World of Sports" program. My all-time favorite driver is Richard Petty and my favorite Indy racer was A.J. Foyt. (I know, I'm showing my age.)

Yaz was just a kid himself back in '64. He's my favorite all-time Red Sox player.

Do you have anyone in particular that you want me to follow their career?

Well, Hank Aaron was playing in 1964 I believe. If you don't mind, it would be interesting to see if he ever passes the "Babe" in the game.

5/4/64 - Game #17: Cleveland (Ramos) @ Boston (Monbouquette)

Pedro Ramos scattered four hits and a walk through seven innings of work as the Indians defeated the Red Sox, 3-1. Ramos was named player of the game. Solo home runs by Whitfield in the 6th and Romano in the 7th provided the tying and go-ahead runs for Cleveland. Boston's sole run came in the 4th inning on a single by Dick Stuart. A fight practically broke out in the bottom of the 7th inning as Tony Conigliaro went in hard on a steal attempt and Woodie Held tagged him hard and said something to him. Tony C got into Held's face and the two of them had to be separated.

Tony C went 0-2 with a walk plus was thrown out stealing.

Manager's Notes: The kid's got spunk. I hope that it doesn't get him into trouble.

Lamabe went the distance and won his first game of the season as the Red Sox downed the Indians, 6-1. Felix Mantilla started the scoring in the first with a 2-run HR, one of three homers hit by Boston. The others were a solo HR by Stuart in the 4th and a 2-run HR by Conigliaro in the 6th to end Tiant's day.

Tony C went 1-4, a 2-run HR in the 6th off Luis Tiant. That's his 4th HR of the season.

Manager's Notes: Today was an early afternoon start so that we could catch a flight to Detroit. Lamabe finally pitched well and only allowed 1 HR. Hopefully, this will get him going.

Mickey Lolich went 7.1 innings, striking out 8, plus hit a grand slam in the second inning, to lead the Detroit Tigers to an 8-0 victory over the Red Sox. Gates Brown hit a 3-run HR in the third inning and Al Kaline drove in a run in the fourth with a single to provide the rest of the scoring.

Tony C went 0-4 with a strikeout.

Manager's Notes: Mike (Cuellar) got shelled and took one for the team by going four plus innings. Gordon Jones is getting in a lot of work but he's still unhappy. We're just not winning enough for him.

Wood led off the Tigers' first inning with a HR plus RBIs by Cash and Brown opened the game as Detroit defeated Boston, 6-0. Burgess, Brown and McAuliffe each drove in a run in the fifth to complete the scoring. Joe Sparma went 7 innings, allowing 3 hits and walked 5, to earn player of the game honors.

Tony C went 2-4, 2 singles, plus was caught stealing. He also robbed Burgess of extra bases with a great diving catch.

Manager's Notes: We got shelled again by Detroit. This was the second game in a row that my starter couldn't last five innings. Now we head to our nation's capital to take on the ninth place Senators. Hopefully Monbo can stop the bleeding.

A 2-run single by Monbouquette in the 7th broke a 1-1 tie as the Red Sox defeated the Senators, 3-1. Boston opened up the scoring on an error by Osteen then Washington tied the game in the bottom of the 6th on a solo HR by Billy Bryan.

Tony C went 1-4, a single, plus got an assist as he threw out Valentine trying to go from 1st to 3rd.

Manager's Notes: Monbo pitched well and won the game to break the losing streak. Now if only the rest of the starters could get going before we fall too far behind.

Gary Geiger drove in two runs with a HR, after Mantilla tied the game with an RBI single, in the seventh inning to give the Red Sox a 6-4 win over the Senators. Geiger was named player of the game, going 3-3 with a double and a single to go along with the 2-run HR. Boston opened the scoring in the top half of the 1st on an RBI single by Yastrzemski then Washington took the lead on an RBI double by Bryan in the first and a solo HR by Cottier in the 2nd. Boston tied the game on an RBI double by Wilson in the 4th then took the lead on a sac fly by Conigliaro in the 5th. Washington tried to come back in the bottom of the 9th as Cottier drove in a run with a double and Green hit a sac fly before Wilson shut the door.

Tony C went 0-1, with a sac fly, and was also hit by a pitch for the 4th time this season.

Manager's Notes: I wanted to give (Jack) Lamabe an extra day of rest, so I gave today's start to Wilson. Good to see Wilson hold on at the end. I was getting worried for a minute.

Boston broke a 2-2 tie in the 5th inning on a ground out by Geiger and he adds an insurance run in the 9th with a single as the Red Sox held on to win, 4-3, to sweep the Senators. The Red Sox opened the scoring in the 1st on singles by Mantilla and Conigliaro then Washington tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a double by Reynolds and a single by Cardwell. The Senators scored a run in the bottom of the 9th thanks to an error by Mantilla.

Tony C went 1-4, an RBI-single and robbed King of extra bases in the 6th.

Tony C was given the 2nd game off.

Manager's Notes: Rats!! This should have been Mike Cuellar's start. I hope that he's not mad at me. I'll just start him in the first game of our next series. Oh, well. Three of four from Washington is okay with me and it's good enough to get us to .500 as we now head to Cleveland for a series against the Indians.

Tony Conigliaro finishes the week going 5-23 with 1 HR and 4 RBI. He is now hitting .299.

A 2-run single by Joe Azcue broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the 4th inning to give Cleveland the lead and the Indians defeated the Red Sox, 4-2. Cleveland started off the scoring in the bottom of the 1st on a single by Woodie Held then Boston tied the game on a single by Dalton Jones. A solo HR by Stuart in the top of the 6th rounded out the scoring. During the 4th inning, Boston's Carl Yastrzemski damaged his meniscus while trying to throw out a runner.

Tony C went 2-4 with a double.

Manager's Notes: Now what am I going to do!! Williams can't even hit my weight. I've got two weeks to figure it out because the GM told me that Yastrzemski was going on the 15-day DL and that he was calling up pitcher Dave Morehead. Just what I need now that I am down to four outfielders.

Tony C went 0-4 with a walk plus struck out twice, once with the bases full.

Manager's Notes: Dick Williams is a piece of crap at the plate. Batting .081 is just not going to cut it. I think that I will be starting rookie Tony Horton in left and use Williams as a defensive replacement. He's much better than Horton with the glove.

"Sudden Sam" whiffed 8 in his five plus innings of work while walking 4.

Tony C went 0-4 with 2 more strikeouts, giving him 20 for the season.

Manager's Notes: Thank god this road trip is over although we went 3-5. We have an off day before hosting the league leading Minnesota Twins. Mike Cuellar is not a happy camper. I told him that he and Jim (Grant) were going into the bullpen and that I would be inserting Dave Morehead and Earl Wilson in their place. I also told Cuellar that I wanted him to get an extra side session with our coaching staff because he's been walking too many hitters lately.

Manager's Notes: Man, these Twins are good. And that's with Killebrew on the bench nursing an injury. Morehead got roughed up in the early innings but seemed to settle down as the game went on.

Boston got four runs in their half of the first on a sac fly by Stuart, followed by a 2-run single by Geiger and an RBI single by Horton, then held on to defeat Minnesota, 4-3 to snap a four-game losing streak. The Twins got 2 runs in the 3rd on a 2-run double by Rollins and later a solo HR by Kostro in the 7th to get back to within a run before "Mudcat" Grant came in and shut the door with a pair of shutout innings.

Tony C went 0-3, with an intentional walk, as he continues his hitting woes.

Manager's Notes: We won!! Except for the mistake to Rollins, Earl Wilson pitched great in his 7.0 innings of work. Our offense is struggling big time but at least our bullpen is ranked 4th in the league in ERA. The workings in left field with Horton starting then Williams coming in in the 8th innings of close games paid off dividends today. Williams made a couple of nice grabs that Horton probably would not have gotten to and helped us hold the lead.

Bob Tillman drove in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the 8th inning on a single to break a 4-4 tie as Boston made it two in a row over Minnesota, 5-4. Don Mincher tied the game with a single in the top of the 8th after Eddie Bressoud had put the Red Sox on top with a 3-run HR in the bottom of the 6th. Minnesota got their other runs on a 2-run HR by Battey in the 2nd and a sac fly by Hall in the top of the 5th. Boston got their first run of the game in the bottom of the 2nd on a solo HR by Conigliaro, his 5th of the season.

Tony C went 1-3 with a HR and a walk. He batted .190 (4-21) during the week with a HR and 2 RBI plus his first stolen base. Tony Conigliaro is now batting .267.

Manager's Notes: Did Conig's HR ever stop? I think that it was heading west bound on the Mass Pike. We finished an otherwise dismal week by taking two of three from the Twins. We now sit 6th, 1 game below .500.

I always liked OOTP7 I might have to fire it back up and try it again. I was never a big fan of historical leagues myself, but this is pretty interesting. All of the What If? Scenarios always seem to be pretty entertaining.

I always liked OOTP7 I might have to fire it back up and try it again. I was never a big fan of historical leagues myself, but this is pretty interesting. All of the What If? Scenarios always seem to be pretty entertaining.

Boston's been pretty lucky so far considering the GM traded away Frank Malzone and Lou Clinton for a couple of relievers.

Is there anyone from this time frame that you would want me to follow?

5/18/64 - Off Day

AL - Named Chicago's Pete Ward Player of the Week. Ward batted .360 with 2 home runs, 10 RBIs and 5 runs scored.
NL - Named Milwaukee's Hank Aaron Player of the Week. Aaron batted .516 with 1 home run, 9 RBIs and 6 runs scored.
Philadelphia - Chris Short left today's game with a tender shoulder. Alex Johnson left the game today with a hyperexteded knee and will probably miss 2 weeks.

Boston came from a 7-0 deficit by scoring 6 in the 7th and 1 in the 8th to tie the game and won in 10 innings, 8-7, on an infield single by Dalton Jones to bring in Gary Geiger with the winning run. Singles by Adcock in both the 1st and 3rd innings each drove in a run then Felix Torres added a 2-run double to give Los Angeles a 4-0 lead through the first five innings. The Angels scored 3 more runs in the 7th on a 2-run double by Kirkpatrick and a sac fly by Torres. A double by Bob Tillman drove in the first Boston run in bottom of the 7th then singles by Horton and Bressoud and a 3-run homer by Mantilla pulled the Red Sox to within one. Gary Geiger tied the game at 7-all with a solo HR in the bottom of the 8th.

Tony C played RF and went 1-5 with a double.

Manager's Notes: A great come from behind game. The guys came back after a huge 7-run hole and really fought hard for the win.

Joe Adcock hit a 2-run homer in the 3rd and Barry Latman scattered 6 hits in 7 innings as the Los Angeles Angels defeated the Boston Red Sox, 6-1. Los Angeles started the run parade with run scoring singles by Kirkpatrick and Torres in the 2nd inning. Moran hit a solo HR in the 3rd before Adcock's 2-run HR a few batters later then added another run in the 4th on a double by Fregosi. Russ Nixon drove in the only Boston run in the 7th inning on a sac fly.

Tony C went 1-4 with a single.

Manager's Notes: This was a letdown after the come from behind game yesterday. The guys just couldn't put anything together.

Tony Conigliaro singled in Bressoud with a double, after Bressoud got a single and advanced to second on a passed ball, in the bottom of the 15th inning to give the Boston Red Sox a 5-4 victory over the Los Angeles Angels. Boston opened the scoring in the 1st on an error by Schaal then added another run in the 3rd on a single by Conigliaro. Los Angeles got a run back on a double by Smith but the Red Sox got another run in the bottom of the 4th on a wild pitch by Dean Chance, the first of four thrown by him. The Angels tied the score at 3-3 in the 6th on run-scoring hits by Fregosi and Adcock. Boston took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the 7th on a sac fly by Dalton Jones but Los Angeles sent the game into extra innings on a single by Torres in the top of the 9th. Each team had scoring chances before Conigliaro sent the Boston faithful home on a winning note.

Tony C went 3-7 with 2 RBIs, including a game-winning run scoring double.

Manager's Notes: We took 2 of 3 from the first place team and now the KC Athletics come to town for a four-game weekend series.

Manager's Notes: Now I'm down to three outfielders as Tony Horton got injured while making a diving catch in the 5th inning. I was giving Conigliaro some time off but I still had to use him. Maybe the GM will find someone to help out depending on Horton's injury. Sloppy play by the defense. Mantilla made 3 errors in the game. Gotta get ready for the nightcap.

Manager's Notes: Before the game, the GM came in and gave me some good news. Carl Yastrzemski was being activated off of the 15-day DL and the team was sending catcher Bob Tillman to triple A. After the game, the GM gave me the bad news. Felix Mantilla, who left the game in the 6th while sliding into a base, had fractured his elbow and will be lost for the remainder of the season. The GM is going to call up first baseman Bobby Guindon to take Mantilla's spot on the roster. Felix is going to go on the 60-day DL.

Manager's Notes: We are getting ready to go on our road trip to take on Minnesota, Los Angeles and Kansas City. I'll start Bob Aspromonte at third base for the opening game against the Twins but I'm leaning towards putting Dalton Jones there. Dalton is a better fielder and is hitting better. Jimmy Coker and Russ Nixon will share the catching duties.

Manager's Notes: What a way to begin the road trip, sweeping the Twins. We end the week, and May, on a high note as we clawed back to .500 (22-22). Lamabe pitched super, only allowing one hit. It's about time that he's started coming around. He's thrown 13 out of 14 scoreless innings in his two starts this week, the last 11 in a row.
