    @ DaoudS

Simontacchi was initally placed on the 60-Day DL in Sept and then in October, was assigned to Columbus (AAA)

      @ Pared

      you''re right on both counts!

The previous MLB editions stunk IMHO! It was a letdwon for me....after coming off of over 1,000 games played with MVP 2005 series.....

And now...with 2007, I have no REAL complaints. With 2006, I complained about that one too. So progression is great!

Now, look at how he's still playing this game, almost daily. That seems like quite a ways, doesn't it.

        With This Impressive Win.....*

the Nats improve their record to 56-66. They are in last place; 9.5 games behind the first place Mets. However, they've gained a game on the Marlins who are directly ahead of them in 5th place. They now trail the Marlins by 7 games.

        * this report is out of sequence from my normal Nats diary. I'm thinking about skipping around a bit. I do have all games played on file from my last posting on my franchise thread up through this game. But it's a lot of work (lol). Quite frankly, the thought of eventually posting details for ALL games played, makes me NOT want to think about it. LOL
        Stay tuned.

          @ Knight

I don't think he'll make the Rays' parent club out of Spring Training. I know for sure that he WILL be in Major League camp, but I think they will be patient with him. But not as (overly) patient in the way that for years, they've been known to be. Meaning if he on the strong straight track and the Rays' either have no pitching in July or the Rays actually have a fairly decent staff anf need perhpas 1 or 2 more starters, I can see him get the callup. Hey, he wouldnt be the first....

Regarding the Nats' 25...I'll post it soon....

If you could...I'm updating the Full Minors set...I'd like to know who you think the Nats are putting on the 25 man roster and who their starting players would be at each position.

          Thanks...

The Nats Win a Thriller, 2-1!

              Top of the 1st:

Juan Pierre flies out to Logan in center. Raphael Furcal singles to center. James Loney flies out to Kearns in right. Andruw Jones is up. Furcal steals second (52nd). Jones strikes out swinging.

              Top of the 2nd:

First pitch swinging, Jeff Kent hits a drive to right that JUST clears the fence. The Dodgers go ahead 1-0. That is the first run scored against David Price in his early MLB career. The pitch was a slurve that was high in the zone. Kent jumped on it.

This was the very pitch that had Marlins batters handcuffed in his debut last week. It'll be interesting to see how much he can control it as this games goes on. The next batter, Andre Ethier singles to center, but Price gets the aggressive swinging Nomar Garciaparra to fly out to Pena in left. Russell Martin flies out to shallow right for the second out. Jason Schmidt strikes out swinging and the side is retired.

              Bottom of the 2nd:

Nick Johnson flies out to Either in right. Ryan Zimmerman grounds out to Kent. Wily Mo Pena, also first pitch swinging, smashes his 28th home run...opposite field to right, and the score is now tied 1-1.

              Willie Harris strikes out swinging.

              Top of the 3rd:

Pierre pops out to short. Furcal hits a DEEP drive that Pena literally catches with his back to the wall in left for the second out. So far in this start, Price has not had the ball down as much in his debut. Already, there have been some drives that the Dodgers' batters have JUST missed hitting out of RFK.

              Loney strikes out swinging.

              Bottom of the 3rd:

With one out, Price hit a bloop single to shallow center--his first major league hit. Nook Logan grounds into a 4-6 fielder's choice. Felipe Lopez pops out to Martin behind home plate.

              Bottom of the 5th:

Pena strikes out swinging. Harris singles to center. LoDuca up. Harris swipes second. LoDuca walks. Price attempts to bunt both runners over, but in stead, bunts too hard and into a 3-6-1 double play.

              Top of the 6th:

Loney flies out to Pena. Jones rips a double to left center. Kents takes a called strike three. Ethier flies out to Kearns.

              Bottom of the 7th:

Nick Johnson strikes out swinging. Zimmerman flies out to deep left center. Andruw Jones catches the drive on the warning track. Pena strikes out swinging again. Schmidt's slider has fooled a few Nationals batters this evening.

              Top of the 8th:

(double switch: Price out of the game, Austin Kearns out of the game, Enrigue Gonzalez in the game and Lastings Milledge in the game. Milledge will go to left and Pena will move over to right.)

Furcal flies out to Milledge in left. Loney flies out to Logan in center. Jones rips another double, virtually in the same spot his last one went to. but it's for naught as Kent grounds out to Johnson at first unassisted.

              Bottom of the 8th:

Harris grounds out to Kent. LoDuca hits a sharp grounder off of a diving Furcal's glove. It's scored an infield hit. William Bergolla comes in the game as a pinch runner. Milledge grounds into a 4-6 fielder's choice. And Logan grounds out 4-3.

              Top of the 9th:

(Jesus Flores in the game to replace LoDuca)

Ethier is up. I decide to bring lefty specialist Ray King in to face him--even though he's hitting around .270 vs. lefties. Ethier lines out to Harris at second. Olmedo Saenz is up, pinch hitting for Nomar. I see he's hitting under .190 vs. lefties, so I leave King in the game. King gets Saenz to ground out to Zimmerman. Martin hits a squibbler down third that he beats out for an infield single. Gary Bennett is sent up to pinch hit for starter, Jason Schmidt.

(closer Chad Cordero enters the game)

(double switch: since the pitchers' spot is due up in the bottom of the 9th: Nook Logan out, Ronnie Belliard in. Belliard will play second. Harris will go from second to left. And Milledge will go from left to center.)

Cordero gets Bennett to hit a weak gounder to the right of the mound. Johnson goes after it and flips to first where Belliard takes the throw.

              Bottom of the 9th:

Dodgers' setup man, Hong Chih Kuo enters the game.

His first batter, Felipe Lopez draws a walk. The next batter, Ronnie Belliard also draws a walk. Seems like Kuo can't control his fastball right now.

              (conference on the mound)

Nick Johnson also draws a walk and the bases are loaded.

Ryan Zimmerman has the count at 3-1. For a facation of a second I'm thinking if Kuo throws a cookie, Zim's got the green light, but I think better of that since Kuo is wild.

BALL FOUR and Kuo forces in a run. The Nats have a walk-off win! Unbelieveable!!!

I don't EVER remember a time in THIS GAME where the opposing pitcher walked four batters in a row. Ball four was REAL close--borderline high strike, but the ump ruled it a ball and the game is over.

David Price pitched really well in his second start, but he wasn't quite as sharp. Nevertheless, all of the Nats' pitching was effective tonight and they get the 2-1 win.

              Player of The Game:

              Wily Mo Pena
              1 for 3 HR, RBI
              .306 28 home runs; 73 RBI's

              LAD 1-9-0
              WAS 2-4-0

              WP: Cordero 3-3
              LP: Kuo 3-1

Home Runs: Kent (18), Pena (28)

              RBI: Zimmerman (53), Pena (73)
              2B: Jones (27)
Stolen Bases: Furcal (52), Harris (28)

              Jason Schmidt: 8 IP 4H 1ER 1BB 7K 3.24

              Hong-Chih Kuo: 0 IP 0H 1ER 4BB 0K 5.06

              David Price: 7IP 1ER 0BB 4K 0.64

              Notes:

Pena's home run puts him in a second place tie with Pujols and Howard. Griffey, Jr. with 29, leads the NL.

The Nats are now 59-68; 9.5 games behins the first place Mets. But they are gaining ground on the 5th place Marlins. They now trail them by 5.5 games. The Marlins have lost 3 games in a row.

David Price vs. Pedro Martinez...Tonight...Don't Miss It!

After readily beating the first place Mets (70-60) 5-0 last night at Shea, the Nats (60-71) hope to make it two in a row over their rivals. In order to do that, they have to go against Mets' ace Pedro Martinez.

Martinez had been injured for about two months and the Mets are hoping he can give them quality innings as they try to fend off the Fightin' Phillies (who now trial by only 1 game).

                The pitching lines:

                David Price:
                1-0
                0.64 ERA

                        Nationals Tame Mets 5-0

                        Top of the 1st:

Nook Logan singles to center and steals second. Felipe Lopez singles to right. RBI and the Nats jump to a 1-0 lead. Austin Kearns singles to center. Runners on 1st and 2nd. Nick Johnson, who’s been by far, the Nats most clutch hitter, took a called strike three. He stood at home plate frozen as Pedro dropped a wicked 12-6 curve on the outside corner.

Ryan Zimmerman punches an RBI single to center, and the Nats go up 2-0. Wily Mo Pena rips a 3-2 fastball to left for a 3-run homer into the visitor’s bullpen, and just like that and almost unbelievably, the Nats jump out to a 5-0 lead! The home run was Pena’s 30th of the season. He has come a long way. At the beginning of the season, he was the Nats platoon outfielder against lefties.

Paul LoDuca bloops a single out to left single. A diving Moises Alou couldn’t hang onto the ball and it got past him. LoDuca thinking double tries a hook slide, but it’s to no avail. He’s out 8-4, as Beltran backed up the play and fired a strike to Luis Castillo at the second base bag. As he’s wont to do, LoDuca briefly argues with the ump before going back to the dugout. Ronnie Belliard grounds out 4-3 and the side is retired. The Nats got to Pedro in a way that’s not usually seen. He threw 32 pitches in the top of the 1st.

                        Bottom of the 1st:

Jose Reyes first pitch swinging, raps a seeing-eye single to center. Luis Castillo lines out to short. David Wright scorches a liner to Pena in left. Carlos Beltran flies out to center. Side retired.

                        Top of the 2nd:

David Price strikes out. Uh-oh…immediately after the punch-out, Martinez shakes his right arm and he has to leave the game. The announced crowd of 55, 437 was hushed. Aaron Heilman comes in to relieve him.
His first batter, Nook Logan, hits a broken bat groundout 1-3. Lopez gets an infield single on a ground that goes behind the third base bag. Wright lunges for it, set and throws. The ump called Lopez safe. A review of the replay shows that Lopez was out by a hair. Kearns then strikes out. That ends the inning.

                        Bottom of the 2nd:

Moises Alou hits a SCREAMING liner out to left center. Logan runs it down for the first out. Carlos Delgado singles to left center. Ramon Castro (in for a resting Sandy Alomar, who himself, was called up after Brian Schneider went on the 60-day DL), grounds into a 4-3 fielder’s choice. Endy Chavez strikes out.

                        Bottom of the 4th:

Beltran, first pitch swinging pops out to Belliard at second. Alou flies out to center. Delgado rips a drive to right center that Logan with his world class speed, catches right at the 371’ mark. Wow….

                        Top of the 6th:

(Duaner Sanchez is in the game)

Nick Johnson grounds a single to left. Ryan Zimmerman raps into a 6-4 fielder’s choice. It was a ball perfect for a 6-4-3 double play, but Reyes had bobbled the ball and it was too late for him to get Johnson at second.

                        (Jorge Sosa enters)

Pena swinging late on a fastball down the middle, pops out to Castillo. LoDuca grounds out 4-3.

                        Bottom of the 6th:

Reyes grounds out 6-3. Castillo singles to center. Wright singles to left center. Runners on 1st and 3rd. Beltran strikes out swinging on a 3-2 pitch. Alou grounds out 4-3.

                        Bottom of the 7th:

Delgado strikes out. Ramon Castro walks. Price walks his first batter. The infield is set to double play depth. Endy Chavez drops a bunt down third. Zimmerman has to charge in to field it. His throw is late to first. Runners on 1st and 2nd. Ryan Church is up to pinch hit for Sosa. Against lefties, he’s hitting .228 (.336 against righties), so I leave him in to face Price. This will be Price’s last inning anyway. Even if Church homers, he’ll still leave the game up 5-3. Well…Church unloads with a blast to center that he JUST got under. Logan races back and catches the drive at the center field wall…at the 410’ mark. Whew! Two down.

The Nats have a brief mound conference to access whether Price has it in him to get one more out. Since the first inning, he’s given up some mighty deep drives that have found a way to stay in the park. This outing has not been one of overpowering the opposition, but one where he’s shown guile and a calmness that has resulted in the Mets not being able to get on the scoreboard.

Price challenges Reyes and on a 2-2 pitch, strikes him out swinging for out number three. Another solid effort in the books for Price!

                        Bottom of the 8th:

(Double Switch: Price out, Ray King in and Dmitri Young in at first to replace Nick Johnson)
Castillo grounds out 6-3. Wright doubles to right center.

                        (right hander Jon Rauch in)

Beltran walks. Alou flies out to shallow center. No advance. Delgado smacks a sharp single to right. The bases are loaded as Wright scurried back to third respecting Kearns’ arm. Castro lines out to Logan in center. The inning is over.

                        Bottom of the 9th:

                        (Rauch still in)

Chavez grounds out 4-3. Marlon Anderson pinch hitting for reliever Feliciano flies out to Logan in right center for the second out. Reyes flies out to Logan in straight away center and the Nats win! The Mets losing this game see their lead over the second place Phils shrink to 1 game.

Rookie David Price wound up doing it again. He was not as sharp as his previous starts, but he made the pitches he needed to make. More shutout ball was in order.

News: The Phils beat The Braves 11-2 as Ryan Howard went 4-4 with 1 homer and 2 RBI’s.

After the game, it was announced that the x-rays on Pedro were negative. He should be
ready for his next start (vs. John Smoltz in Atlanta).

David Price Goes Against The Surging Phillies Tonight!

It's rare when a pitcher with less than FIVE Major League starts is looked upon as a stopper, but that's exactly how David Price will be looked at tonight when he takes the mound at Citizen's Bank Ballpark. The Nationals have lost four games in a row. They need Price to help them end this losing streak. Their last win? Price's last start which he won against the Mets at Shea, 5-0.

He'll have his work cut out for him as the Phillies will seek their 4th win in a row to stay in first place in the National League East. They are 1/2 game up on the Mets.

Changes in The Nats Batting Order

Just before gametime, the Nats changed their order around a little in an apparent attempt to rest a few players in advance of their three games series at Wrigley tomorrow.

                              The lineup:

                              CF-Logan
                              3B-Lopez

Sitting this one out: Zimmerman, Pena, LoDuca and (a slumping) Willie Harris

                                Price Wins Again!

                                Bottom of the 1st:

Jimmy Rollins strikes out on three fastballs. He took two on the outside corner for strikes. The third was inside and low. He swung through it.

Shane Victorino singled to center. With Howard up, Victorino steals second. Pat Burrell, first pitch swinging, blasts a 2-run homer to left, and the Phils jump out to a 2-0 lead. A replay showed that the pitch was low, but stayed out over the center of the plate.

Jayson Werth flied out to Logan in center and the side is retired.

                                Bottom of the 2nd:

With one out, Wes Helms draws a walk. Carlos Ruiz flies out to left…right at the warning track. Milledge made the catch. Adam Eaton strikes out.

                                Bottom of the 3rd:

Rollins leads off the inning by driving a slider 366’ to left field for a home run. The ball just cleared the wall. The Phils increase their lead to 3-0. This is definitely unchartered territory for Price. It looks like we’re finding out that Price is human.

Victorino grounds out 4-3. Howard flied out to deep left center for the second out. Burrell flied out to left.

                                Top of the 4th:

The Nationals are still hitless. At this point, it’s been 12 up, 3 down

                                Top of the 5th:

Nick Johnson ends the Nats’ hitless streak. He slaps a single to left on a 3-2 pitch. Ronnie Belliard singles to left. Milledge strikes out swinging. Jesus Flores, looking first pitch fastball, gets on up and close to the outside corner. He sends a 369’ laser over the right center fence and the score is tied at 3-3!

William Bergolla flies out to Burrell. Price strikes out swinging.

                                Bottom of the 5th:

Carlos Ruiz, who has been a season-long thorn in the Nationals side, singles to right. Adam Eaton drops a sac bunt between the mound area and first base. Price charges the ball and fires LATE to second. No play! And the relay throw to first is late also. Now there are runners on first and second and no outs.

Jimmy Rollins hits a one hop rocket to short. Lopez fields it and goes to third---Ruiz is out! Then Belliard fires to first—DOUBLE PLAY!!! A 6-5-3 double play and Jimmy Rollins is jumping around at first. He is arguing with the ump that he was safe at the bag. Jimmy Rollins now gets ejected from the game! Eaton stays on the second base bag. Victorino flies out to Kearns in right.

                                Top of the 6th:

(Abraham Nunez in the game to replace Rollins at short)

Felipe Lopez taps an ‘ooops-excuse-me-semi-bunt-attempt’ towards third. The ball bloops out to the bag. Wes Helms fields the ball in the third base cutout area--he never charged it--and his throw to first is late. Lopez has an infield single. While Kearns is up, Lopez easily steals second. Kearns then strikes out. But once again, Nick Johnson comes through. He rips an RBI single to left. The Nationals now go ahead, 4-3.

Belliard hits a 2-run double to the left center wall. The score is now 5-3.
