            Hoyas strike again in recruiting
JT3 hits the Pacific Northwest for another star in the 2010 class

            May 3, 2010

WASHINGTON, D.C. - When you're a head coach of a major college program, recruiting is never over. Ever.

So when Georgetown swept in their four blue-chip five-star prospects in the early signing period in December, it appeared on the surface that they were done and full in 2010 and ready to focus completely on 2011, to get a head start on their rivals.

But internally, John Thompson III knew that there might be an unexpected opening coming.

That opening came to pass shortly after the season ended, when sophomore power forward Danny Stone was granted his release and transferred. It was because of this that JT3 continued recruiting prospects for the 2010 class. And those efforts paid off Monday.

A month removed from a brutal loss to super-power Memphis in the national title game, Georgetown began the healing process by securing their fifth 5-star recruit of the class: point guard Tarrance Toussaint of Vancouver, Washington. The 11th ranked point guard in his class (#22 overall) didn't sign in the early period, and continued to receive plenty of attention from local powers like Washington, Gonzaga and Oregon. Once Georgetown came calling though, Toussaint warmed up to the idea of capping off the "Second Fab Five". With Chris Wright about to begin his senior year and J.R. Givens having the look of an early entry to the NBA after this upcoming year or next, Toussaint was sold.

Wow, that is a heartbreaking loss in the title game. The turnovers looked like they killed you. But with a recruiting class like that, it wouldn't surprise me to see you back there within the next two years.

Woooooo, Shawn Taggart is the man!

Quick question, did you create some recruits so that they would leave early? Don't think I've ever seen an 87 ovr freshman or 90 ovr soph.

Nope, no creating on my part. In the case of Schmidt (Memphis) and Staten (Arizona) though, they were in the top 5 of their class...so it's not TOO surprising.

I just noticed the Southeastern Michigan. I am from Toledo and used to substitute teach in Monroe County.

Tough loss in the championship. Looks like the referees were a little whistle happy against you that game.

"There's only one thing that will satisfy us"
As Georgetown's fabled recruiting class arrives on campus, the burden of expectations comes with them

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Normally you'd think going 34-3, winning one of the best conferences in America and getting to the National Championship Game would be considered a tremendous success that would buy leniency from the fanbase.

                                Not at Georgetown.

With the recent resurgence of three 30-win seasons and two Final Fours in the last four years, Hoya Paranoia has resurfaced and is in full effect in the nation's capital. After two decades of more or less anonymity, Georgetown is a brand name again; it's "cool" to be Hoya. And with the ascension to power comes the burden of expectation.

"I think our fans are very happy about the past few years," coach John Thompson III said. "But I also know that they took the loss to Memphis hard. Well, nobody took it harder than me, or our players. We understand that we've been tantalizingly close recently, but haven't gotten all the way. The fans are getting anxious. So are we."

The "tantalizingly close" JT3 is talking about is a 30-7 season in 2007 that featured a stunning overtime win over heavy favorite North Carolina in the East Regional Final before losing to Greg Oden's Buckeyes in the national semifinal. The next year, the Hoyas were 32-4, easily claiming the #1 overall seed and getting back to the East Regional Final before being stunned themselves by underdog Stanford in Charlotte. After a transition 26-8 year in 2009, the Hoyas broke loose last year, winning their first 26 games and again cruising to the top overall seed in the Big Dance. They faced close calls from Wisconsin and Florida in the East Regional in Syracuse, but broke through and returned to the Final Four in Indianapolis, where they routed USC and were the favorites to cut down the nets, only to be snowed under an avalanche of Memphis dunks and alley oops.

Both inside and outside the walls at Georgetown, the embarassing loss to the Tigers in the title game served as an indictment on John Thompson III's Princeton-style offense. Seeing their Hoyas get taken apart with ease by the running and gunning of John Calipari shook many Georgetown fans and made them question if the sloth-like pace of JT3's offense has what it takes to bring a national title to D.C.

Enter: Darius Jefferson and the most heralded recruiting class since Michigan's Fab Five.

Jefferson, the nation's top recruit, brings with him four other five-star prospects: small forward Orien Myers, shooting guard Elliah Banks, center Bernie Gunn, and point guard Tarrance Toussaint.

"There's only one thing that will satisfy us," the local D.C. product Jefferson said. "I've gotten to know all the other incoming guys, and I've gotten to know the guys already here. Our goal is clear: we're not going to settle for anything less than cutting down the nets in April. We want that national championship."

Jefferson has the look of the classic "one and done" who is using the mandatory one year of college to simply prepare himself for the NBA. He disputes that, however.

"I've never said I'd be outta here after one year. I'm not thinking about that right now, and I'm not going to do damage to this team or program to elevate myself. The only thing I'm concerned with is taking this team back to the Final Four and winning a national title."

The road to Houston for the 2011 Final Four will be treacherous. The Hoyas have road games against ranked opponents in North Carolina, Maryland and Oregon, along with a home game against ranked Kansas. And the Big East will be as tough as usual, with Syracuse, Louisville, Villanova, Seton Hall, Marquette and Cincinnati all joining Georgetown in the preseason top 25.

Still though, at #3 in the polls, the Hoyas are considered the favorite in the Big East, the favorite to claim the #1 seed in the East Regional once again (in Charlotte this year), and one of the favorites to get back to the Final Four.
