After two greatly unsuccessful seasons as the head coach of The Orange, Robinson was fired yesterday. Less than 24 hours later, Athletic Director Daryl Gross named 25 year-old Eric Martin as the new coach of the Syracuse Orange football team. A successful High School Offensive Coordinator, Netzel now becomes the youngest head coach in Division 1A football. He was introduced today at a press conference at the Carrier Dome.
Q: As the youngest coach in Div. 1 football, how do you plan to answer the speculation that perhaps you are not qualified to coach this team?
A: With all due respect, I believe that when you see the product that I intend to put on the field, those questions will answer themselves. This program is in a lull. We can't get much lower than we are right now.
Q: What types of offense and defense do you plan to bring to the program?
A: Primarily, I run the pistol offense. It will be a similar offense to that of Nevada's football program. I also intend to install a 3-4 defense, however, this will take time. At first you will see a mixture of the two while we evaluate the talent we have here, and what we will need to recruit.
Q: In regards to the talent, do you intend to give more playing time to Seniors or will underclassmen play early?
A: The best players will play. End of story. We will find out more when we play the Orange and Blue game next week. This game will be full contact, all out. As far as I am concerned, this is a tryout for every player on our roster. They better go all out.
Q: Thank you for your time, Coach. We look forward to seeing your product on the field.
A: Thank you.
Stay tuned for coverage from the Orange and Blue game.
