Gaels squeak by Jaspers to take first in the MAAC, 73-71.

The Iona Gaels extend their win streak to 4 games led by Nate Minor's performance. The sophmore center led all scorers with 19 points beating highly touted matchup with Manhattan freshman Lawrence Poole. Poole had a double double, but it wasnt enough against the balance attack Iona displayed throughout the game. Milan Prodanovic started in a place of Shannon Bush, who has struggled the past few games. He added 12 points along with a season high 7 assists. The game was close virtually the whole game, until with 5 seconds left, Rashad Green missed an open 15 footer to send it to overtime as the Jaspers fall to 7-6 in the MAAC.

The win for Iona puts them solely in first at 10-3 with Niagara and Siena in a tie for second at 9-4. The Gaels host Fairfield in closeout the week and visits Loyola (MD) next week.

Tarver excited to hit the court!

New Rochelle, NY (AP) -- Junior guard Andre Tarver returns to the team, after being out for 16 days with a strained abdomen. Tarver, who led the MAAC in scoring last season, strained his abdomen in the early minutes of a victory against Rider, 70-42 in the second of their current 5 game winning streak.

"It feels great!, now i just have to to re-adjust with my team when i go out there and contribute." replied Tarver. Coach D'Antoni plans to limit Tarver's minutes after coming off the injury in which he will come off the bench. The Gaels will face Loyola (MD) on the road in Tarver's return.

Iona ready for the showdown at Niagara.

New Rochelle, NY (AP) -- Iona and Niagara square off to what appears to be a crucial game on both sides. Iona (17-7) and (11-4) in the MAAC is up one game on Niagara and can pull ahead by 2 games which is key with 2 games left in conference play.

"Were mentally prepared for this matchup, and my guys are confident that we can go in their gym and steal one." stated by coach D'Antoni in a recent interview. Nate Minor also stated that "We ultimately want to win the MAAC real bad, despite finishing second last year. With the experience that my teammates and I got from that last year makes us hungry to win it this year." The Gaels havent won the MAAC since 2001 and their last trip to the big dance was in 2005.

Coach D'Antoni has done great things by creating a winning culture in Iona again. Nobody expected Iona to contend this year from all the seniors they lost last season, but under D'Antoni's coaching philosophy and uptempo offense, the Gaels are on pace to reach back to back 20 win seasons and possibly on the verge of getting an NCAA bid come March.
