Minor drops 30, as the Gaels edge the Purple Eagles in overtime 91 to 81.

The Gaels needed to right the ship after losing winnable games against Canisius and Saint Peter's. Someone needed step up big quickly, otherwise Iona would have a hard time staying in the race for the MAAC crown with its youth. That man was Nate Minor, who statistically is having a down year or sophmore slump, but came through big by delivering 30 points and a rebound shy of a double double. The game was close throughout since both teams are so evenly matched. The Gaels had a 5 point lead evaporate in the closing seconds of the first half by seniors Rob Garrison and Tyrone Lewis sinking consecutive threes to put the Purple Eagles up by one at the break.

In the second half, coach D'Antoni made various changes to the offense by slowing down the tempo to wear down Niagara's frontline as Minor scored 19 of his 30 points in the second half including overtime. With less than 6 minutes left in the game, the Gaels had a 10 point lead which was fueled by a series of Niagara turnovers. Tyrone Lewis led the late charge by hitting a pair of threes and setting up Demetris Boythe in the post for a pair baskets as well to cut the lead to 4 with a minute remaining. Iona's youth was quickly exposed with poor shot selection and had a 3 point lead with 30 seconds left. Niagara with the ball in the closing seconds, as Rob Garrison drove through the heart of the Gaels defense by hitting a running floater while being fouled in the process, and converted the three point play to tie it at 73 with 11.3 seconds left. Shannon Bush fed it to Nate Minor at the top of the key with 5 seconds left and missed the contested 15 footer to send the game into overtime.

In the extra frame, the Gaels fed off the energy of the crowd with Minor hitting the first basket, but banged his knee against Boythe's knee causing him to sit out for half of the overtime. Junior walk on Gus Gaines took his place to convert the three point play as Minor was too hurt to finish it. The Purple Eagles however, went cold by missing their first 4 shots and trailed the whole time in the extra frame as they ran out of gas when Iona turned up the tempo on offense. The Gaels picked a great win over conference leader Niagara, who now fall into a first place tie with Siena at 5-1. The Purple Eagles take on Rider at home on 1/14, while the Gaels face Marist on the road.
