Part I: Boys Of Summer
Looking up at the sky, with only a few puffy clouds slowly dragging themselves across the dusk sky. The sun setting in the distance, leaving a beautiful red skyline. The birds flying back to their nests in the distance and the light breeze, making the summer heat easy to deal with. I was taking my last few warm up swings in the on deck circle, looking towards the stands. There was only about 100 or so people in the stands, this was after all only a high school game, it was mostly family and some fans from school. Even with such a small cheering section every time something good happened it sounded as if there was 10,000 people cheering for us. It's the nights like this that always would bring a smile to my face.
[Crack] I looked up and saw the ball flying into the outfield, Marcus, my brother hit a line drive single into left field. I was yelling and cheering for him, before that hit Marcus was 0-3 on the day, he was trying to get into University on a Baseball Scholarship but things were looking bad for him. The last few games he had been struggling, but this hit finally got him out of the slump. The scoreboard in the distance showed 2-1 for the visiting school, and we were down to the final out in the game, and it was up to me to continue it. “Now batting, number twenty-three, starting right fielder... JACOBBBBBB WESSSST!” I looked around and could see my mother and father in the stands standing and cheering, and next to them was my big sister and her boyfriend cheering along with them.
I dug my cleats into the batters box and kicked up some of the finer dirt that was on top. I stared down the pitcher as he got the signal from the catcher. He started his wind up and and slung the ball in towards the plate, my brother at first took off to steal second base, I swung at the ball to help my brother out by making the catcher delay his throw a little. The catcher threw the ball as fast as he could to second base but Marcus slid in there safely and stole second base. I lined up into the batters box once more, and I watched the pitcher throw in the pitch once again, it was a nasty fastball up and in that got me swinging. I was down to my final strike, if I missed another one then it was over and I would have let my entire team down. As I dug into the ground once more to take possibly my final swing in high school, I turned around and looked at my family once more in the stands, still cheering and yelling, it put a smile on my face and relaxed me completely. The pitcher was ready, I was ready and it was down to this, he wound up and threw the pitch in, it was a hanging curveball, I took my swing, [CRACK]. The sound of the ball hitting my bat echoed, as I started to run down the first baseline, I was watching the ball it was going back to the wall. It had the distance, I thought it did anyways. The outfielder ran back to the wall and jumped for the ball, what happened next...
“And that was Fortunate Son, by Creedence Clearwater Revival on your Saturday morning. Coming up next is Shattered by the Rolling Stones...”
