    Coach's Update #1: Roster Woes

Wow... it looks like I got screwed over and have a lot of work to do to make this team competitive in the next couple years. This is the definition of "Rebuilding Phase". Here's a quick Team Overview.

    SG Troy Steere, Senior, 27 MPG 9.2 PPG 1.5 AST 1.8 REB .357 FG% .318 3PT%
SF Steven Goodman, Junior, 3.1 MPG 1.1 PPG 0.1 AST 0.6 REB
    C Andy Brown, Senior, 13.2 MPG 3.4 PPG 3.4 REB 0.7 BLK .435 FG%
    C Bruce Holmquist, Senior, 28.7 MPG 9.7 PPG 4.8 REB 0.9 BLK .408 FG%
    C William Peng, Junior, 1.9 MPG 0.8 PPG 0.5 REB 0.1 BLK

Yes. That is my roster. 5 players, with 3 being Centers. There will be walk-ons, but I doubt they will make a huge difference. This year is going to be a test of my patience, ability, and suicidal tendencies.

Stay Tuned for the next update, in which I will go over the offensive and defensive schemes. Go Pioneers!

      Coach's Update #2: Gameplan

Well as of now, we are looking for the right mix of scoring and tempo. Having 3 bigs returning, along with no true Point... This could be tough. Right now this is what we're looking at.

      Offense
Motion. Hopefully this will work out like a classic Dick Bennett offense. Work the ball around slowly and take the opportunity for a good shot when it comes to us.

      Defense
I would like to run a full-court press, but the athletes we have currently don't support this system. As of now we are looking at a 2-3 zone to take advantage of our bigs.

Next on the slate of updates is the recent history of the Carroll program. Go Pioneers!

Coach's Update #3: History of the Program

Another short update today, as we are still in the recruiting phase getting shot down by everybody on my list left and right. We'll go over how we fared the past few seasons.

Season 28 (1 year ago) - We finished 6-21 (1-15). I'm hoping for an improvement over this, but with the roster how it is, it could be tough. We finished with a RPI of 363, so obviously we struggled.

Season 27 (2 years ago) - This year was a bit better, as we finished 14-16 (7-9). With an RPI of 230, it was obvious that we lost a bit of our swagger going from Season 27 to 28. Hopefully within 3-4 years, I'll build this team up to be a conference champ (which we have not been since Season 19, a full 10 years ago.)

The best year in school history was undoubtedly Season 10, in which we finished 26-5 (15-1), ranked #14 with an RPI of 7. We won the conference, and gained at at-large bid into the National Tournament in which we went to the Elite Eight.

Here's hoping to return to that glory, and stay there until I can move on. Go Pioneers!

            Coach's Update #4: Recruiting Battles

Well the exhibition games are approaching at a rapid pace, and we are still looking to fill in some holes on the team through recruiting.

Here are the signings so far, and what I hope from them (aside from some good minutes per game.)

PG Brian Achenbach - A decently quick point-guard who should be able to spread the ball around and work it in with the dribble. His two best attributes are Ball Handling and Passing, with Defense coming in third. Give us a true point man, and should be looking to play most of the game.

C Keith Fried - Amazingly, the Center is the fastest guy on the team. Best stat is rebounding, and will give us minutes off the bench (if not starting due to sheer athleticism/upside) to grab some boards. Hopefully some offensive rebounds will help the points he scores as he is not big by any means (6'8'' 216). Low-Post game can use some work, look for us to drill him in practice.

PF Jason Kelley - A good low post defender with high rebounding and shot-blocking. Low Post is not far behind those two, and he should see alot of minutes as well. Perimeter game is not bad, so he should open up more options if he decides to step out. Dual-threat possibility, will not be a liability defensively at all.

SG Thomas Moon - Transfer student from University of Wisconsin-Stout. 3 years of eligibility left, great stamina will not get tired easily. Not great at anything, but well-rounded. Should help off the bench, will do everything.

Now for the remaining players we are going after.

SG John Ruel - A great perimeter player who can light it up from 3. Decent passing and ball handling means he can handle himself well and create his own opportunities. Another player that can start and/or provide decent depth off the bench.

SF Adam Grossman - The kid is an athlete. Stats aren't that high, but will possibly start due to lack of forward depth. Amazing athleticism for a kid at this level, other skills will go up with practice and PT.

The next update will be at the end of recruiting to let everyone know how we came out of the period. Go Pioneers!

              Coach's Update #5: Recruitment Summary/Season Preview

Out of the remaining two players we had tabled offers for, SF Adam Grossman signed, while John Ruel decided to attend another school - citing the "babes on campus" as a top reason.

Now that the team is sorted out, here is what we are looking for as to depth and playing time.

PG - Brian Achenbach, FR (30-40 Minutes)
SG - Troy Steere, SR (20-30 Minutes) / Thomas Moon, JR (10-20 Minutes)
SF - Adam Grossman, FR (25-30 Minutes) / Steven Goodman, JR (10-20 minutes)
PF - Jason Kelley, FR (25-30 Minutes) / Bruce Holmquist [center], SR (20-25 Minutes)
C - Keith Fried, FR (20-25 Minutes) / Bruce Holmquist, SR (20-25 Minutes)

As you see we are laden with freshmen that can prove a point. First exhibition game today against fellow Wisconsin school Concordia College. I'm not expecting big things as of yet, maybe some flashes of athleticism and potential, due to the new players not having time working in the offense.

Gear up Carroll fans, the season is about to get underway. Go Pioneers!
