Those two tough losses really are frustrating, weren't they. I hope that they don't end up impeding on your career advancement opportunities.

How many starters are coming back for next season?

            EIU awards/stats

EIU sweeps top player awards, pulls in 5 All-OVC honors
            EIU Basketball News

EIU's disappointing end to a 24-9 season did not ruin the chances for their individual players at the annunal OVC end-of-season banquet. The Panthers pulled in two big awards and was honored with five All-OVC players.

Sophomore C Skip Maye was a surprise choice for OVC Player of the Year. Maye was spectacular at times but remained very consistent, which is the main reason why he earned such an honor. Maye led the Panthers in scoring and rebounding, averaging 10.8 ppg while snatching 7.4 rpg. Maye was also a solid defensive force, averaging 1.3 bpg. Last season, Maye was OVC Freshman of the Year and earned 2nd Team and Freshman Team All-OVC honors.

Freshman C Ryan Morandais was not a surprise choice as he easily won the OVC Freshman of the Year award. Morandais, EIU's only recruit this past season, split starting duties with sophomore C J.D. Lovelace and was a solid performer on the Panthers' frontcourt, averaging 7.1 ppg and 4.5 rpg while shooting nearly 36% from the field and nearly 80% from the stripe.

Five EIU players were also honored on the All-OVC squad, led by 1st Team selections in Maye and star junior PG D'or Dupre. Dupre, who was the OVC Player of the Year last season, averaged 10.1 ppg, 3.0 rpg and dished out 4.5 apg while shooting 40% from the field. It is the 2nd selection for Maye and the third selection for Dupre.

Named to the 2nd Team was a pair of seniors in SF Rod Bobik and SG Lloyd Giles. Bobik, who was surprisingly snubbed from last year's All-OVC team, averaged 8.6 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 2.3 apg and was tied for the team lead with Dupre in steals at 1.2 spg. This honor is the 3rd selection for Bobik in his career. Giles is honored for the 1st time in his career thanks to a solid year, where he averaged 6.4 ppg, 4.4 rpg and 2.2 apg. Giles, known for his defensive presence, shut down several top scorers in the OVC and was 2nd on the team in steals at 1.1 spg.

Morandais was named to the All-OVC Freshman Team. Murray State head coach Billy Kennedy was named the OVC Coach of the Year after finishing 2nd in the standings and upsetting EIU in the OVC final to earn a trip to the NCAA Tournament, where they lost to Pittsburgh in the 1st round.

Next up for the Panthers is the remaining of the offseason. There are a lot of rumors swirling around at EIU but no confirmations at this point. Could changes be on the horizon for head coach Kyle Borland or EIU?

              Dupre to NBA

Dupre making big leap, declares for NBA Draft
              EIU Basketball News

EIU lost the biggest piece of their puzzle today when star PG D'or Dupre officially declared for the NBA Draft. Dupre could have entered with the option to return to EIU but he immediately signed with an agent, officially ending his tenure with the Panthers. Dupre is projected to go in the late 1st round to early 2nd round.

Dupre, if he had returned, would have officially entered his senior season despite being at EIU for 5 years. As a sophomore, Dupre suffered a torn ACL in the Panthers' 2nd game of the season and was granted a medical reshirt. Dupre missed the remainder of the season and EIU struggled to a 10-17 mark and missed the OVC Tournament. Dupre stayed injury-free last season as the Panthers zoomed to a 28-5 mark and made the 2nd round of the NCAA Tournament, but an injury this past season left him out of the OVC Tournament and may have cost the Panthers' their shot at a 3rd NCAA Tournament berth in the last 4 years.

Dupre leaves behind a great legacy at EIU, having taken the Panthers to 2 regular season championships, 2 OVC Tournament championships, 2 NCAA Tournament berths and their 1st NCAA Tournament win ever. Since Dupre arrived on campus, EIU has gone 80-46 under head coach Kyle Borland, including a school-record 28 wins last season and an amazing 24 wins this past season. When Dupre is in the starting lineup, the Panthers have compiled a 64-29 record.

Dupre has been one of the most honored players in EIU history, including the honor of being last season's OVC Player of the Year. Dupre also earned OVC Freshman of the Year honors and has been named to the All-OVC Team 3 times, including two 1st Team selections.

For a career, Dupre has started 93 games and has averaged 9.0 ppg, 2.6 rpg while dishing out 4.8 apg. Dupre has also been a great defensive force, known for taking on the top point guards around the OVC and has averaged 1.4 spg. Dupre has also been a very consistent shooter for the Panthers, compiling a 38.6 career FG%, including a 33.7% mark from beyond the arc, and has been solid at the line with a 75% career mark.

With Dupre's departure, there leaves more gaping holes in the Panthers' starting lineup, despite the return of three talented big men. Will the issues be resolved in recruiting, or will Coach Borland be looking elsewhere for answers?

                Borland to Kent State

Coach Borland leaving EIU, accepts Kent State head coaching job
                EIU Basketball News

EIU head coach Kyle Borland will not be returning to the Panther bench for his 7th season. Instead, Borland has just accepted a new position, taking over the reins for the Kent State Golden Flashes of the Mid-American Conference. Borland will replace departing coach Jim Christian, who accepted a prestigious position as Syracuse.

"I am very excited for this opportunity, but I am also sad to see what I'm leaving behind," Coach Borland stated at the press conference today. "I built a very strong program at EIU and I am thankful for all the support they have given me over the past 6 years. I appreciate all the effort Eastern Illinois has put into the furthering of the Panther basketball program, but it is the right time for me to move on to bigger and better things."

Coach Borland leaves EIU as one of the winningest and successful coaches in Panther history. In 6 years, Coach Borland has compiled a 101-81 (55.4%) record which includes 2 OVC regular season championships, 2 OVC Tournament championships, 2 NCAA Tournament berths, a 1-2 NCAA Tournament record (the 1st NCAA Tournament win in EIU history) and was at the helm for the two most successful seasons in Panther history. The past two seasons saw EIU go 52-14 with 2 regular season titles with an NCAA and NIT Tournament berth, and shattered the top 2 school records for wins with 28 and 24, respectively.

Borland has also overseen 27 All-OVC Selections, 6 OVC Player of the Year winners, 5 OVC Freshman of the Year winners and was named OVC Coach of the Year during his 5th year at the helm, his most successful season at EIU.

"Despite all that I've accomplished here at EIU and my desire to stay, I've realized that it is the right time to move up in the coaching world," Coach Borland stated. "Kent State is wonderful opportunity to coach a solid mid-major program with a great supporting foundation, and with 7 scholarships at my disposal, I can quickly build my style of play."

Borland signed a 2-year deal with Kent State and will immediately hit the recruiting trail. Kent State has been a middle-of-the-pack team in the MAC, but with the arrival of Borland and his solid track record, do not be surprised to see the Golden Flashes make a big splash next season.

Good Luck with Kent. Definitely looking forward to reading about your first season there. What's the roster look like? Do you have some talent to work with or are you basically starting from scratch?

Borland fills all 7 scholarships, looking ahead to solid year
                    KSU Basketball News

Newly-hired head coach Kyle Borland has just finished his 1st recruiting year at the helm of the Golden Flashes, filling all 7 scholarships he had available with some really solid players that should make the team very competitive.

                    L.L. Wong, SG --- 4*
                    Milwaukee, WI
                    #124 Overall, #25 SG

Coach Borland went back to his home state to pull in his biggest recruit, a long-range sniper from Milwaukee in L.L. Wong. Wong has great shooting skills and will look to compete for a starting job right away.

                    Mike Brower, SF --- 3*
                    Phoenix, AZ
                    #238 Overall, #61 SF

Brower is an outstanding small forward with a huge upside. At 6'8, Brower stands pretty tall and is known as a very solid rebounder and a slasher-type of player. Look for Brower to be a major contributor off the bench.

                    E.J. Dukes, PF --- 3*
                    Mobile, AL
                    #326 Overall, #80 PF

Dukes is another solid player and should compete for a starting job right away as well. Dukes is a streaky shooter but scores in bunches, so look for him to be a top guy on the frontcourt.

                    Marquis Turiaf, PG --- 3*
                    Independence, MO
                    #396 Overall, #70 PG

A sneaky point guard, the 5'9 Turiaf doesn't match up eye-to-eye with most point guards, but his skills make up for the size disadvantage. Despite being shorter, Turiaf is a great slasher who also knows when to dish, when to finish and when to pull up and drain a jumper. Solid player who should be a good contributor.

                    Louis Salazar, PF --- 3*
                    Toronto, CN
                    #420 Overall, #101 PF

Salazar is one of three power forwards that were committed to Kent State before Coach Borland's arrival, and he is clearly the best of the bunch. A solid big man that reminds Borland a lot of Iman Dearman, a tough power forward he coached at Eastern Illinois.

                    Donnie Taft, PF --- 3*
                    Toronto, CN
                    #467 Overall, #110 PF

Taft is a good player but with the slew of power forwards coming in he will probably reshirt the next season. Taft is a great rebounder and knows his way around the basket.

                    Lenny Snowden, PF --- 2*
                    Cleveland, OH
                    #569 Overall, #132 PF

The only in-state recruit for Borland is one he didn't have to contact, as Snowden had already accepted a scholarship offer from the previous coach. Snowden will most likely redshirt and needs to work on his shooting, but he is a solid talent.

Those 7 recruits join a solid but small returning group. With only 2 seniors and 2 juniors, Kent State will be young but talented, and the inexperience will allow Coach Borland to implement his system better and faster. Senior PG Dallas McBride and junior SF Deon Diggs will look to lead the team in Coach Borland's first season. How far will the Golden Flashes go?

Kent State reveals 2013-2014 roster & schedule
                      KSU Basketball News

Kent State has just released its first full roster and schedule under new head coach Kyle Borland. The Golden Flashes are predicted to finish third in the MAC.

                      Starters

                      C - #11 Chad Lang --- 7'0, 245 Sophomore --- Ottawa, CN
                      PF - #12 E.J. Dukes --- 6'10, 232 Freshman --- Mobile, AL
                      SF - #33 Deon Diggs --- 6'10, 297 Junior --- Toledo, OH
                      PG - #7 Dallas McBride --- 6'4, 208 Senior --- Blacksburg, VA
                      SG - #21 L.L. Wong --- 6'5, 176 Freshman --- Milwaukee, WI

                      Bench

                      #2 Rayle Peters, PG --- 6'3, 192 Senior --- Cleveland, OH
                      #25 Richie Traore, SG --- 6'4, 206 Junior --- Sterling Heights, MI
                      #15 Mike Brower, SF --- 6'8, 235 Freshman --- Phoenix, AZ
                      #4 Marquis Turiaf, PG --- 5'9, 158 Freshman --- Independence, MO
                      #45 Louis Salazar, PF --- 6'11, 239 Freshman --- Toronto, CN
                      #24 D'or Battles, SG --- 6'6, 196 Sophomore --- Detroit, MI
                      #43 Dusty Oliver, PF --- 6'9, 237 Freshman --- Minnetonka, MN

                      Reserves

                      #40 Lenny Snowden, PF --- 6'10, 220 Freshman --- Cleveland, OH
                      #14 Donnie Taft, PF --- 6'8, 245 Freshman --- Toronto, CN
                      #10 Fezzik Gruber, SF --- 6'9, 239 Freshman --- Newport Beach, CA

The Golden Flashes are young but talented. Diggs is arguably the best player on the team and is a defensive force who knows how to score. He is a huge but quick small forward and will probably help out at the power forward position as well. McBride is a great senior leader and will direct Coach Borland's up-tempo style. Lang is a very underrated center who should produce well. Look for freshman Wong and Dukes to contribute in their own ways.

Kent State faces a very tough non-conference schedule that includes Preseason Top 25 teams in #15 Tennessee and #3 Villanova, a tough 6-game road trip to take on tough mid-majors like Duquesne, St. Joseph's and Houston and several other tough matchups.

                      Ball State
                      @ Western Michigan

If the Golden Flashes can pull out at least a .500 non-conference record, they could close in on 20 wins if they perform well in conference play.

The Preseason Top 25 was also been released. The defending national champions Louisville sit pretty right at the top of the poll, and are looking for the first repeat national champs since Florida. National runner-up Arizona is right on their tails at #2, and other Final Four participants Kansas (#9) and UNLV (#19) also appear in the poll.

                      1) Louisville
                      2) Arizona
                      3) Villanova

Coach Borland notches 1st win at Kent State
                        Kent State Basketball News

Newly-hired head coach Kyle Borland picked up his 1st win at the helm of the Kent State Golden Flashes in big fashion, as his team demolished Bradley at home 76-37. It was clear that Coach Borland's up-tempo style caught on quickly with the team, as they got 22 points off the fast break.

The Golden Flashes were paced by freshman SG L.L. Wong, who poured in a game-high 24 points and was deadly from 3-point land, nailing all 3 long-range attempts. Senior PG Dallas McBride was the catalyst for Kent State's success, dishing out 7 assists while scoring 11 points of his own.

                        Final Score:
                        Kent State, 76
                        Bradley, 37

                        Dallas McBride, PG --- 11 pts, 7 asts, 2 stls, 3/5 3PT

Coach Borland and his team face a tough task next week, welcoming the #15-ranked Tennessee Volunteers to town. The last time Coach Borland faced Tennessee his Eastern Illinois team lost to a then-#2-ranked Volunteer team by 37 points. That Tennessee team went on to win the National Championship. This time around, the Flashes hope to hang with or upset their formidable foe.

The six major or better schools on your OOC schedule should make for a pretty decent RPI later on, especially if you do well against them.

Good luck with Kent State in the MAC.

The surprising Kent State Golden Flashes nearly pulled off a huge upset in only their 2nd game under new head coach Kyle Borland, holding a double-digit lead late in the 2nd half only to see the resilient Volunteers battle back and force overtime. In the extra period, Tennessee showed off their ranked muscle and won 90-84.

Kent State led 66-56 with only 5 minutes to go before the Volunteers came storming back. Tennessee finally tied the game at 70 with only 2 minutes left, and both teams traded clutch buckets in the final minutes, concluding with a runner in the lane by Tennessee with only 0.7 seconds left to send the game into OT tied at 76.

In overtime, the Volunteers opened with a 10-0 run and never looked back.

                            Final Score (OT):
                            #15 Tennessee, 90

Kent State couldn't pick up a win in their 1st of 6 straight road contests, losing to a surprisingly-good VCU team 69-58. Despite VCU playing out of a smaller conference, both teams had very similar rankings talent-wise, and it was the home crowd that seemed to be the determining factor.

                                Kent State Basketball News

The kinks in Coach Borland's system are still being worked out in his first year at the helm of Kent State, as they lost their 3rd straight despite a valiant effort from freshman SG L.L. Wong. The sniper from Milwaukee, Wisconsin poured in a game-high 18 points, including 3 of 5 shooting from beyond the arc, and grabbed an impressive 7 rebounds but did not get the help he needed.

                                Final Score:
                                Duquesne, 68

Coach Borland: "Well it's obvious that the guys are still getting the hang of the new system. We played well in our first game, but we've had some very tough opponents lately and they've struggled running everything correctly. I'm not worried yet, but our schedule does not get easier. We are confident and the effort I've seen has been amazing, so it's only a matter of time."

Coach Borland's Flashes stay on the road and will play another tough opponent in St. Joseph's. St. Joe's was a bubble team that just missed the NCAA Tournament last season and fell one game short of the NIT Final Four, but they made the NCAA Tournament the previous season as a #5 seed.
