Cleveland, OH - The Indians played host to the AL Central rivals, Chicago White Sox, Monday afternoon as the Cleveland crowd soaked in opening day atmosphere and watched their hometown pick up the win. C.C. Sabathia pitched 7 innings full under the hot Cleveland sun and posted 7 Hits, 2 ER and 4 SO (ERA 2.56) and he left the game with the win in hand in the 8th inning. Earlier, the Indians took an early 2-0 lead with Ryan Garko driving Travis Hafner home after Pronk had hit a double in and Travis Hafner brought Grady Sizemore across the plate in the 3rd. After a quiet 4th inning, the White Sox struck in the top of the 5th inning to halve the Indians lead. Joe Crede blasted a Sabathia fastball over the wall in right field for a solo home run, while A.J. Pierzynski singled home Jermaine Dye in the 6th after Dye had tripled to deep center field.

Sabathia set down the White Sox in order in the top of the 7th inning and Mike MacDougal took his turn to pitch in the bottom of the 7th having previously pitched in the 6th, with Mark Buehrle leaving the game after 5.0 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO (ERA 3.59). MacDougal left a fastball up high only to have Ryan Garko slam it for a solo home run to put the Indians up 3-2. Rafael Betancourt kept the WhiteSox quiet in their part of the 8th, while the Indians posted an insurance run in the bottom of the 8th courtesy of Grady Sizemore singling home Jason Michaels. Joe Borowski came in to pick up the save as he kept Chicago under wraps to the crowd's delight.

    WP: C.C. Sabathia (1-0)

Cleveland, OH - Down 4-0 late on, despite registering 7 hits through 7 innings, the Indians destroyed White Sox relief pitcher Scott Linebrink to score 6 in the 8th and dramatically steal a win Wednesday evening. Orlando Cabrera had hit two long balls, one in the 1st inning of Fausto Carmona, the second in the 7th, off of reliever Craig Breslow to make it 2-0 White Sox. They added a further two runs in the top of the 8th thanks to nice hitting by A.J. Pierzynski, who doubled home Jim Thome, and Carlos Quentin who brought A.J. home on a single to left field.

The Indians' starter, Carmona, pitched well through 5 innings, however, allowing only two hits and one run, the home run to Cabrera. However in the top of the 5th, Fausto Carmona threw a hard fastball which appeared to damage his elbow. Manager Eric Wedge had no hesitation in taking Carmona out of the game and place Craig Breslow in his place. Details of Carmona's injury and the extent of the injury are still sketchy. Managing a tiny era of 1.79 through 5 innings, Carmona was missed by the Indians as Craig Breslow struggled and gave up 3 runs on 3 hits, also allowing 3 walks in only 2.1 IP (ERA 11.56). Jensen Lewis was more effective, taking only several pitches to get out of the 8th without any more damage.

Then came the bottom of the 8th inning. The Indians exploded. Despite a poor start with Jamey Caroll grounded to third and Travis Hafner striking out, Victor Martinez smashed a single before the in-form Ryan Garko took his AB in the 8th. After fighting to a 2-2 count and fouling 2 further pitches off, Garko destroyed a middle-away fastball to right field again - an almost duplicate of his homer two days back. Except this time, he brought 2 RBIs across with one swing. Score, 4-2 White Sox. Ozzie Guillen obviously considered Garko's homer as a weakness in starter Vazquez' ability and brought Scott Linebrink in to pitch. Linebrink allowed Jhonny Peralta to single and steal 2nd. With 2-out and a runner in scoring position, David Dellucci's AB was as clutch as they get, even this early on. Dellucci swung hard and landed a double to deep center, bringing Peralta home easily and allowing Casey Blake to try his hand at tying the game with Dellucci at second. And he did. 4-4.

Linebrink wiped his brow and took a quick glance at Casey Blake on first. He threw his 1-2 pitch to batter Franklin Gutiérrez only to watch it leave the stadium to left field and land safely on the Home Run Porch at Progressive Field. 6-4. Linebrink managed to finally retire the side as Grady Sizemore lined out to right shallow.

The hometown crowd were going crazy and the loud cheers continued into the White Sox part of the 9th. Rafael Betancourt sat down the first batter before giving way to closer Joe Borowski, who struck out 2 batters in 0.2 IP and picked up Save number 2 on the year after a dramatic finish to proceedings in Cleveland.

      WP: Jensen Lewis (1-0)
      LP: Scott Linebrink (0-1)
      SV: Joe Borowski (2)

      Top Performer(s) of the Game:

Oakland, CA - The A's played host to the in-form Cleveland Indians Friday evening and after a pitching duel through 7 full innings, the game was decided late on by some clutch Athletics hitting.

The very first pitch thrown by Oakland starter, Chad Gaudin, was smacked hard to right field as Indians' lead off man Grady Sizemore looked sure to have hit a double. The center fielder decided to round 2nd and try for a triple and was quickly shot down on his attempt. The baserunning mistake was followed by a ball popped up by catcher Victor Martinez. The full wrath of the mistake was felt just one batter later as Travis Hafner launched a solo shot that just about stayed in McAfee Coliseum. 1-0 Indians, but it should've been 2-0. David Dellucci grounded out to end the first.

Indians starting pitcher Paul Byrd was in form and allowed only one base hit through 10 at-bats. Daric Barton was the first to register a hit against him in the 4th inning and it was an important one for the A's as after Jack Cust struck out swinging, Mike Sweeney sent a Byrd fastball to the back rows and pushed Oakland out in front 2-1. The lead didn't last long, however, as in the top of the 5th, Casey Blake launched a Gaudin slider that hung over the plate too much an amazing 410 feet to center field and tie the game at 2 a piece.

Both Chad Gaudin (7.0 IP, 8 H, 3 ER, 3 SO, ERA 3.84) and Paul Byrd (7.0 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 4 SO, ERA 2.56) left the game during the 8th inning. Gaudin was pulled after allowing Grady Sizemore to double home a run in the top of the 8th (his 4th double of the year and 2nd of the game) Alan Embree provided relief for the hometeam A's and allowed only one hit in the remainder of the 8th and it wasn't enough to extend the Cleveland lead.

Bottom of the 8th inning saw Rafael Betancourt, the Indians setup man, pitch to knock Ryan Sweeney out before he let a fastball fly too high and Travis Buck took advantage, cracking a solo home run to tie the ball game. Mark Ellis followed that with a double and a single by Daric Barton brought Ellis home to make it 4-3. Betancourt looked towards the dugout to receive the signal from manager Wedge and quickly struck out Jack Cust to end the inning, a little too late for Wedge's liking, but much to the delight of the Oakland crowd that their team had dissolved the Indians setup pitcher to take the lead.

A's closer Huston Street bounced into the game in the 9th and he gaveup a double to Jhonny Peralta, who eventually tagged up to 3rd base on a fly ball by Casey Blake. With the tying run at 3rd base and with Adsrubal Cabrera at the plate (who was a perfect 3-for-3 to that point), the A's crowd held their breath as Cabrera swung at a 2-1 pitch from Street. The crowd breathed their sigh of relief, however, as Cabrera flew out to shallow left field and the A's defeated the Indians in a close game in Oakland.

Oakland, CA - The Athletics took the Indians and especially Cliff Lee to the cleaners on Saturday evening in Game 2 of the 3-Game series between the sides. The A's hit 4 home runs, accounting for 6 of their 7 runs and the Indians' comeback fell just short. When all said and done, the A's were worthy of their lead and deserved to win the game. Starting pitcher Cliff Lee never really took off, though he did pick up to post a solid 5th and 6th inning of work.

Despite amassing 6 runs on a 2 RBI double from Casey Blake, a 2-run homer from Franklin Guitierrez in the 7th and a 2-run home run for Grady Sizemore in the 9th inning, the visiting Indians were pegged back by some hard hitting by the Athletics. Chris Denorfia blasted a 3-run homer in the 2nd to set the pace, while Daric Barton and Donnie Murphy added solo shots of their own. Mike Sweeney also hit a solo home run, number 199 of his career - and no doubt he'll be looking for number 200 against C.C. Sabathia of the Indians tomorrow in Oakland.

Joe Blanton posted 6.1 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO, as Huston Street closed things out, allowing 2 Hits, including the 2-run shot from Sizemore (#1 on the season for him) but was able to regain his composure and finish things off for the save, forcing Victor Martinez to pop up for the final out of the game. The write ups are very nice and I feel that they are much better than just putting down the stats of a couple of players with no write ups.

                  Keep up the good work.

Great Job with this so far, but I have one question, why do you not have updated rosters?

My guess would be that in order to be more realistic, the rosters that should be used should be the ones from the start of the exhibition games, which is where the game starts. That, IMO, would be the correct way to go.

Former Mets' GM, and now ESPN analyst, Steve Phillips said in an article in "ESPN the Magazine" that the Indians are in need of a bat. He suggested in the article, which deals with fixing the Reds through trades, that he would deal Adam Dunn in a package deal to Cleveland for Lee & Gutierrez. What do you feel about the Indians and how would that trade look as the Cleveland GM?

I am updating the rosters for every MLB team daily, call ups/send downs/injuries/trades are all the exact same as what has happened in the Majors this year.

That's the way I like to do things in Franchise mode.

Adam Dunn for Gutiérrez and Lee? Hmm, sounds like a nice trade.

Lee struggled in his first start of the year and despite knocking 2 homers through 5 games, Gutiérrez won't hit as well as that through the entire season - simply a period of isolated power.

My Indians starting lineup has too many Right-Handed hitters and Dunn would be a welcome lefty power threat.

At the minute, though, I am conducting roster movement as per the MLB this year - trades/injuries/call ups all done the same as what has happened in the MLB this year. If I delve further into the franchise and decide to change this, it might be a trade to look long and hard at. Only problem is, I see Cliff Lee becoming solid through the year - despite his opening day struggle, he left only a few pitches over the middle and unfortunately, they were hit well by the Athletics.

Thanks for the interest in my Franchise!
