Maryland Terps - Why Not? (NCAA 09)

    Settings:
    All-American
    6 min quarters
    Modified Sliders
    Some random roster set

I'm going to use Maryland's all black uniforms for rivalry and some conference games and if there is a bowl game. When playing FCS teams I will not return punts at all.

Re: Maryland Terps - Why Not? (NCAA 09)

AP Maryland - With the 2008 season just arund the corner the future could be bright for Maryland fans. As the Terps prepare they have finally decided on an opening day starting Quarterback and the lucky will is Chris Turner who started 8 games in 07 as Jordan Steffy went down with an injury.

The job was a 3 way race between, Turner, Steffy and Florida transfer Josh Portis who was ineligible last year to play but is probably the most athleticall gifted of the 3. Turner is a more dropback passer as Portis likes to move, Steffy has some mobility aswell. The thing that will keep you starting at QB will be consistency, which Maryland didn't have last year.

Consistency is key if Maryland is going to be any threat at all to anybody. If the players remain healthy it can be a good year for Maryland. Don't be shocked if coach Ralph Friedgen pulls Turner if he sees any signs of inconsistency and we may see Josh Portis sometime this year. Portis is currently listend as the backup to Turner as the senior Steffy is the 3rd string.

But no matter who is running the team the team does have some very dangerous weapons. Maryland may very well have the best set of receivers in the conference. Darrius Heyward-Bey, Isaiah Williams, LaQuan Williams and Danny Oquendo. Heyward-Bey can be a threat from any angle and is expected to have an outstanding season and should be the best wide out in the ACC.

Heyward-Bey is a gifted athlete who may be expected to go in the 1st-round if declaring for the draft after a solid season, and may very well get All-American honors.

The key to the Terps being successful is the running game. Keon Lattimore and Lance Ball were a terrifying and lightning duo for the Terps last year combining for 25 TDs. That is big shoes to fill for the Sophmore du of Da'rel Scott and Morgan Green. Scott is going to be the stater but Green should see plenty of action.

The offense line is a huge strength as there are plenty of starters returning.

The strength of the defense is the linebacking corp. Hybrid linebacker/end Trey Covington is expected to see plenty of different looks from offense lines End Jeremy Navarre, who led the team with 5.5 sacks last season, will slide into the middle to fill the hole, but players like Olugbemi Otulaja and Travis Ivey will need to step up and show that they can handle playing a lot more snaps.

The departures of Isaiah Gardner, J.J. Justice and Christian Varner leave the secondary relatively inexperienced aside from Kevin Barnes who is one of the best corners in the ACC.

Those questions will have to be answered if the Terps want to avoid falling back in the pack of a very competitive ACC. But, the talent is there to make a run at a sixth postseason berth in the last eight seasons.

            Game Preview
            FCS East @ Maryland
The Terps open the season against a very easy opponent, which should just be like a practice scrimmage game. Chris Turner will be starting this game and it should be a very interesting season as the Terps should win this game with ease. FCS East has barely any fire power on either side of the ball and should be no threat to Maryland and Maryland's only concern should be to stay healthy this game. Maryland should be exciting to watch.

              Maryland Blows Away FCS
              Heyward-Bey Shines

              FCS East |0 | 7 | 0 | 0 | 7
              Maryland | 28 | 14 |10 | 21 | 73
We saw both Chris Turner and Josh Portis in this game and by far there is no clear cut better QB decided yet, although FCS is no challenge both QBs showed signs of being very able to run this offense. Turner went 17/21, throwing for 296 yards and 3 TDs. Portis went 8/9 thowing for 101 yards and also 3 TDs. But the star of the game was the athletic Darrius Heyward-Bey. Heyward-Bey had 4 total TDs. Heyward-Bey grabbed 8 receptions and hauled in 223 yards through the air along with 3 TD grabs. Heyward-Bey also ran for a touchdown on 3 carries for 15 yards. The defense rallied 5 sacks this game along with 2 INTs. Mack Frost led the defense with 7 tackles an 1 sack along with 4 tackles being for a loss. It was an all around solid game for the Terps but the real surprise was the effectiveness of Josh Portis being so effective with the 2nd string team in and missing one full year after being transfered. We will continue to monitor this situation but Turner should still be starting next week against Mid Tenn State.

              Stats:

              Chris Turner - 17/21, 296 yards, 3 TD
              Josh Portis - 8/9. 101 yards, 3 TD

Morgan Green - 20 att, 63 yards, TD
              Da'rel Scott - 10 att, 50 yards, TD
              Phaterrell Washington - 7 att, 43 yards
              Darrius Heyward-Bey - 3 att, 15 yards, TD

              Darrius Heyward-Bey - 8 rec, 228 yards, 3 TDs
Laquan Williams - 4 rec, 56 yards, TD
              Isaiah Williams - 3 rec, 22 yards
Morgan Green - 2 rec, 9 yards, TD
Matt Furstenburg - Rec, 1 yard, TD

Mack Frost - 7 tackles, 4 tfl, sack
Trey Covington - 4 tackles, sack
Anthony Wiseman - 2 tackles, INT
              Jeff Allen - INT

                  Thanks

I was trying to upload some snapshots but it kept saying the upload was not successful so we will have to wait and see. Even though I may not be doing it right I wanted to get the photos to easportsworld.com then put them here. Not sure on what exactly to do though
