Sabres make 4 huge deals to shake up roster before season begins

BUFFALO, NY (AP) - The Sabres played jumble with their roster this week, finalizing 4 deals just days before the regular season was to begin. It was widely known that the Sabres were looking to change their roster before the start of this season, but noone could predict how drastic the changes would actually be. Here are the trades that were finalized this morning:

Buffalo Gets: C/LW Andy McDonald, D Jay McKee
St. Louis Gets: RW Maxim Afinogenov, D Toni Lydman

    ----------------------------------------------------

Buffalo Gets: D Jay Bouwmeester, C Rob Globke
Florida Gets: RW Ales Kotalik, D Teppo Numminen

    ----------------------------------------------------

    Buffalo Gets: C Mike Jones
Nashville Gets: C Adam Mair, RW Dylan Hunter
    ----------------------------------------------------

Buffalo Gets: LW Chris Bourque, D Tyler Sloan, RW Eric Netzel
Washington Gets: D Henrik Tallinder, LW Andrew Peters

Breakdown: The Sabres aquired Andy McDonald and Jay McKee from the Blues for Afinogenov and Lydman. Both players bring some much needed veteran leadership to this squad and look to be a staple in the Sabres lineup for the next few years. McKee comes home to the team where he spent the majority of his career. He had fallen out of favor in St. Louis to some of their younger players, and the Sabres took the opportunity to bring him back to Buffalo. While Afinogenov was a fan favorite, he had worn out his welcome in Buffalo and was in desperate need of a change. Both teams get a great deal on this one, both getting veteran defenseman and a forward that will change the way they play hockey.

In the trade to Florida, Adding Jay Bouwmeester will be sure to make the Sabres a much more solid team on defense, as well as adding a great shot to the powerplay unit. Florida gets a veteran D man in Numminen as well as a playmaking sniper in Kotalik. Buffalo also aquired Rob Globke, and he was immediately assigned to Portland.

In a third trade, Buffalo sent gritty forwards Adam Mair and Dylan Hunter to Nashville for C Mike Jones. Jones is a young player, and looks to have a bright future as a 3rd or 4th line center with the Sabres. He has a great slap shot, and plays with a lot of heart.

In the most interesting trade of all of them, The Sabres aquired Bourque, Sloan and Netzel from the Capitals for Tallinder and Peters. Tallinder will provide a defensive upgrade for Washington, and Peters will play more of the spark plug / left bench role. In this trade, the Sabres get Bourque, who is the son of futre HOFer Ray Bourque. They also aquire undrafted rookie Eric Netzel, who has a ton of potential to be a good player on this team, but doesn't nearly have the experience to back it up at this time. Netzel and Bourque were kept with the big club, while Sloan was optioned to Portland.

Check back for the opening day lines.

Just Photoshop...Used layers to make it look like a newspaper, and re-created the Buffalo News font from the front of the paper.

Yep, I know. ;-) You will be in the regular rotation of Pat Kaleta and Clarke MacArthur, as well as getting Bourque some time....I wanted to keep Kaleta in for the first couple of games, and will be working you in for some playing time. If the scoring draught I had last game keeps up against the Rags, you will most definitely be in there for the next one. The nice thing about MacArthur is he can play both wing and center, so if I bench Kaleta for a game, you can center the 4th line, and he can play wing. I've been trying to roll 4 lines pretty consistantly. Worked in the first game, but not in the 2nd. I just didn't get enough quality shots off in the last game.

Thanks, man. I thought the trades were pretty fair...not overly unrealistic. Actually, the format is pretty simple. It was created in Microsoft Excel, and I just update the spreadsheet after each game, turn the gridlines off, and then copy and paste it to Photoshop and save it as a png. Seems to work pretty well. If you watch enough Sabres hockey on TV, you know where the Save, Collision, and Heads up Plays come from...That makes it more fun for me too, because I can look for those things as the game goes on, and save them...

Should get another game in tonight, look for an update late.

Send me what you have, but I wouldn't hold my breath. Its pretty much all the time I have to keep this going, what I have to do with this franchise...Not much time to do anything with a little baby around, only a couple of hours between when he goes to sleep and when the wife gets off work. I'll see if I can get something going for you in my spare time though.

I understand...about the being busy thing. Not the whole baby and wife thing. I'm probably younger than you cause I don't have a baby or a girlfriend...YET

I have my next game done, plus a small news story (The much anticipated NHL debut of Mike Jones!), but it wont let me upload EA Sports World things right now...Will try again later tonight, but may be tomorrow before this update gets in....

Pretty good dynasty mate. Hope you do not mind if I borrow your format as it is quite a organized way to keep things up to date.

What were the sliders you were using exactly? They seem to generate penalties nicely for both sides, I never seem to get any myself despite the computer having a ton.
