Background

So if you ask players how there sleep before the draft was and they'll say "It was the worst night of my life" or "I had the worst nightmare." For me its different it was one of the best nights of my life. About a week ago my brother was traded to the senators so he bought a house out there and we all helped him move which was fine but it became even more beneficial when it was near the draft as he let us come stay in his huge house.

Pre Draft

So the day before the draft i didn't sleep instead me and Ryan stayed up and he invited Markus Naslund over and i invited using my Russian connections my mentor Alex Ovechkin. We stayed up almost all night playing NHL 08 and drinking beer. When we took a break i phoned my agent surprisingly he was awake so i started a bit of a conversation.
"Hey Hunt its me Jeff."
"Hey Jeff."
"Any word on my draft position?"
"Well you were expected mid 1st until that groin injury I think your expected 3rd or 4th maybe late 2nd."
"Thanks Hunt oh and a friend of mine is lookin for an agent you interested?"
"Sure."
"Ello This is Alex Ovechkin."
"Mr. Ovechkin I'm Hunter Watson Jeff's agent I hear your looking for one."
"Yes I is."
"Well I'm always open if you need one."
"Thank you."
"Hey Jeff sounds like you got a good agent."
"Yeah Alex i can give you his number soon."
"Thanks I'll keep him in mind."
"Hey Jeff it's Canada Sweden me and Ryan are waiting."
"Alright."

After that night we all bonded and it seemed like the rangers and capitals would have interest in me. I wonder who will draft me...

So i went out to do some drills with Ovechkin and Bruce Boudreau for some practice and for Bruce to obviously do some scouting and to make me blend into a better Capital. You know you need to take their advice when a superstar and arguably best forward in the NHL and the Jack Adams coach gives it to you. One piece they both gave me after a game vs my friends and that was hit more. Ovy told me to not be afraid to dangle and deke if the d mans not someone who will lay me out. so when i went out for the next game of the tournament i was much more effective i got a hat-trick and 3 assists one was a sweet give and go as my teammate Bryan Hurst passed it to me i gave it a one touch back which i think surprised him as he let of a worse shot than usual. My second assist was i was behind the net i faked the rap around and passed it to my team mate Scott Quickel who fired one under the bar .My last assist came from me dekeing the small defender fakin the slapshot then snaping it on goal the goalie sprawled to keep it out and it went on Hurst's stick who tucked it in. My goals went a little weird i took Alex and Bruce's advice to hit more so i dumped the puck in it came of the boards i stepped into the d man took the puck cut in front and roofed it. My other line mate Nick Barry hit hurst at the top of the faceoff circle who saw me at the post it hit a d's stick i batted it from beside the net to the front then batted it in for my nicest of the night. My Last goal was all Thomas Hickey who took 2 steps in from the blue wired one that went off my stick but didn't change course and went in. Boudreau came up to me and said "Kid if you can do that off Hickey's bomb you have a good future with any team with a hard shooting D man like Green and Jurcina."
"Thanks Bruce all I can hope is that with this groin i get drafted even though my agent expects me to be drafted in the 3rd or 4th or even late 2nd oh and Bruce if you want an under the radar good player pick up you should get Stefan Della Rovere."
"Thanks Jeff have a good tournament."
"I will Bruce."

After the game i got a phone call from numbers i didn't recognize who could it be?

As i answered my IPhone touch i felt a little weird as i never have heard either of these numbers.

it turns out it was a 3 way convo
"Hi Jeff its PK."

"Tkachuk."
"And not Subban but Paul Kariya."
"Well its an honour to talk to you two stars."
"We are interested in drafting you and are curious if we could attend a few of your tournament games and talk to you after them."
"That's fine Paul."
"Good to hear."
"This is neat i've now found out 2 teams are interested in me."
"Really what other team."
"Sorry cant say Keith."
"Thats all right."
"Anyway I better let you get on with your life."
"And I better let you 2 get on with yours."

I cut off the line and was shocked to good hockey markets interested in me

Well the first round went normally Stamkos #1 Doughty #2 Bogosian #3... with the 30th my buddy Jason Skyland had cracked the first round as he was drafted by the Penguins which excited me with the 32nd my friend and line mate in the tournament Nick Barry was drafted by the LA Kings then was when i knew the move for me was made as the Washington Capitals traded Brooks Laich and their second round draft pick 58th overall to the Ottawa Senators for Ryan Shannon and their second round draft pick 42nd overall which occurred right after the blues drafted Philip Mcrae so the Blues sat helplessly knowing that they might well have lost there shot at me. The best moment of my young life has just occurred as Bruce and Alex walked up to the stage and announced the 42nd overall pick and as they announced the pick i was on the edge of my chair. I know its weird that i was at the draft even though i was predicted to be a 3rd or 4th round pick but still. as Bruce thanked the Sens for their hospitality and here was the magic moment.
"With our second round pick 42nd overall we are proud to select Jeff Shannon of the WHL Vancouver Giant's. I think i leapt 3 feet up and then ran to the stage i've been drafted.

So dad sent me out to get bread for lunch as i went out i was kind off mad at him...(talk to people out side ...) my iphone started ringing i though this was the magic moment. Hh hello?
JEFF GET BACK HERE NOW WERE STARVING.

as i walk in the door i chuck the bread at dad and plant my self in front of the TV as the 40th pick rolled around i noticed there was a difference on the board as the Capitals had the 42nd now and the sens had the 58th

but i got cut of right before i phoned Hurst

i thought the trade part was interesting i mean in the quickel he said there was a trade but didnt specify so this i thought would ad a little depth and a new look to the rosters

My first week of intense training was interesting for the first part i was working with Sergei and Alex to improve my speed. After the third day my legs felt like they'd fall off! Feds and Ovy were really pushing me maybe they thought id need more speed to surprise the opposing players at the world juniors which they gave a new date so it ends prior to the AHL season. The best news is my fellow AHL teammate Stefan Della Rovere will be on Canada with me. The second half of the week i worked with Brash on fighting and hitting and then with the defensive coach on defense i wonder if they know im a sniper/dangler who hits and not a defensive power house.
