Breaking the Curse: Seasons with the Red Sox

Jan. 5, 2003- ESPN reports that the Red Sox have made a shocking move, firing manager Grady LIttle, and Frank Mlak. Mlak was a former bench coach on Bobby Cox's Atlanta Braves staff. Mlak brings with him new pitching coach Ben Gomes, batting coach Walter Jones, Minor League Manager Tyler Skylarky, and Scouting Director Jasper Jenkins. GM Theo Epstein commented by saying, "Frank is a great coach, he knows the game very well. He will give us a very good chance to finally break through and win a World Series. We have a very talented team, and I have no doubt that he will work wonders with them."

Jan. 12, 2003- Only a week after taking over the manager position of the Red Sox, manager Frank Mlak made his first decision. Early on the morning of the 12th, Mlak called Theo Epstein and recommended to him that the Red Sox trade SP Steve Woodard to the Cubs for SPs Juan Cruz and Carlos Zambrano. Epstein thought through it, and executed the deal, giving the Red Sox two talented young starters. The Red Sox rotation is now a little deeper with the addition of Cruz and Zambrano.

Manager's Comments: "We're going to be a strong team this year. We can flat out hit. We're not going to hit that many homers, but thats not our forte. Our trademark is going to be line drives. On the pitching side of the fence, the trade that brought us Juan Cruz is very important. It adds a solid, young starter to the rotation, and gives the rotation a little more depth. We don't really have a set closer, so we're going to go with a committee to close out games. We're going to challenge for the AL East title this year. We're going to surprise a lot of people who say our pitching isn't deep enough, we will be pretty good this year", said manager Frank Mlak in a press conference after the final spring training game March 29. The Sox open the season in Tampa vs. the Devil Rays on the 31st of March.
